PART ONE 2020-21 SEASON REVIEW

Chair and Club Manager Report

It is our great pleasure to provide the Chair and Club Manager’s Report for the 2020-21 season.

It would be fair to say that everyone approached the summer with great uncertainty and a sense of trepidation. Covid-19 had forced the country into lock down for a significant part of the winter and the general consensus was that there more lock downs were likely to follow over the summer. Suddenly running a cricket club was much more complicated with contingency and safety plans required before the season even started. No-one was sure what registrations would look like and the forecast was that traditional funding streams would not be available.

As it turned out the season turned out to be one of the most successful in the club’s history with significant growth in membership, the Premiers winning the prestigious Two Day Championship and then in April the club being awarded the NZC Community Cricket ‘Club of the Year” award.

Membership For the third year in a row we experienced considerable growth in our membership with playing numbers rising in both seniors and juniors. It is actually quite hard to capture exact playing numbers as there are now so many casual players in the One Day teams and a junior member will sometimes play in as many as three different competitions. Our official playing membership on CricHQ is now 910 players spread across 72 teams. Add in over 200 non- playing members (social members, coaches, managers, administrators, old boys) and we now boast a total membership of over 1000 which means we are now the third largest club in Auckland.

The Senior section of the club fielded 31 teams this season which confirms us as the largest senior club in New Zealand.

• 10 Men’s Two-Day teams • 11 Men’s One Day teams • 9 T20 Men’s teams • 1 Women’s Premier Reserve side

The Junior section of the club fielded 50 junior teams

• Midgets – 81 registrations • 8 Year 3 & 4 Action Cricket teams • 4 Under 10 teams • 9 Under 11 teams (7 boys and 22 girls) • 6 Under 12 teams • 7 Under 12 teams • 9 Under 15 teams

3

• 1 Under 16 teams (girls) • 5 Under 17 teams • 2 Under 23 team

Playing Success As a club our main focus is on participation and giving as many cricketers in West Auckland as possible a great experience. But of course, the playing successes that come along the way are also important and Suburbs has always prided itself on developing young talent and providing a pathway through to higher representative honours.

This season nine teams won their grade in Auckland Cricket competitions. Congratulations to:

Coaching and Player Development Suburbs has always placed great importance on coaching and player development. This season we expanded Jonny Bassett-Graham’s role further to include Premier, Club Coach Development Manager and Youth Academy Director. He was ably supported in these roles by Trevor Payle (3rd & 4th grades, women, and Midgets), and Sahil Mehta (Juniors) as our staff coaches. We also employed another five casual coaches over the season, and they all did a great job. With the growth in junior cricket the volunteer parent coaches and managers are increasingly important. We supported these coaches with two practical training sessions this season, combined with access to the NZ Cricket online coaching qualifications.

While we have made some good progress in this area there is still much to be done and this will be a key focus area over the next few years.

Community Engagement As a club we want to be the focal point for our local community. We made some good progress in this regard this season with better engagement with local primary and secondary schools - we had engagement with more than 15 schools over the last year.

This was done in a number of ways. In primary schools we conducted pre-season awareness sessions using club coach Sahil Mehta and then during the season we also held special Auckland Cricket ‘Bat First’ promotional sessions in primary schools. For secondary schools we ran special youth coaching clinics for both girls and boys during the winter and then provided targeted coaching and advice to several secondary schools over the summer.

We have a fantastic facility in our Indoor Training Centre and the plan is to use this more over the coming seasons to connect with the local business community. Sponsorship is becoming more and more important as the club grows and we were fortunate again to be supported by a small group of dedicated sponsors and funders – please see the dedicated SNLCC Partner page for details. We would encourage you to support our sponsors whenever possible.

Obituary - John Reid It was with great sadness that we all learned in January of the passing of Club Patron John Reid. John was one of the greatest cricketers to ever represent Suburbs New Lynn and had an illustrious career for the Black Caps. He also served as Chief Executive for Auckland Cricket, High Performance Manager for NZC and General Manager – Community Sport for Sport NZ. The club was always very important to John and even though he had lived for many years in he was always supportive of club activities. He will be sadly missed.

Administration In April 2020 the fixed term contract of our current Club Manager Joanne Thornber came to an end. After taking some time to consider the best management options going forward bearing in mind the Covid-19 situation, the management committee decided to advertise the position and in June were able to appoint Kate Hillier-Cook as the new Club Manager. We were very lucky to secure someone with event management experience and a strong connection to the club. As a result of the off-field management of the club was very ably handled by the Executive Committee, the Junior Committee and Kate.

It is no small task running a club of our size and we are delighted to report that in addition to the membership growth and playing success outlined above, the club also returned a healthy financial surplus for the third year in a row. We now have a small reserve fund which we have decided to use to assist the Ken Maunder Park Community Trust to complete a range of renovations to the clubrooms over the winter of 2021.

Enjoy the winter and we look forward to seeing everyone again next summer.

Season Highlights

NZC Club of the Year In April NZ Cricket contacted the club to announce that Suburbs New Lynn had been awarded the NZ Cricket Club of the Year Award. This award is part of the Community Cricket Awards presented each year by . The award was only created in 2015 and Suburbs became just the sixth winner. When presenting the award at the Suburbs Cricketer of the Year Dinner on 9 April, Stead from NZC noted

“We had identified seven key areas that we would use to assess the award. Suburbs had performed so well in all these areas that it was a clear winner. We could see significant growth in membership and most pleasingly the women and girl’s section of the club had grown from one to four teams. The connection to the local schools was also strong with relationships in place with over 10 primary schools. Suburbs also had great ethnic diversity in its membership and in many ways reflected the modern New Zealand. Finally, there was no doubt that the player development programme was first class having produced so many Black Caps over the last decade and this also highlighted the exceptional leadership and governance that was in place at the club. Congratulations on a wonderful season.”

Premier team - Hedley Howarth Two Day Champions What an amazing finish to the season! The Premiers went into the last Saturday knowing they needed to win against University to claim the Hedley Howarth Trophy for the 6th time in our history. Things did not go well in the first two sessions leaving the side needing 234 off 33 overs in the last session for an unlikely victory. Up stepped George Hanham (125) and Tejas Patel (76*) and in one of the most remarkable partnerships in the history of the club they steered the team through to a famous victory.

7

Growth in girl’s cricket History shows that Suburbs New Lynn has always had difficulties establishing a permanent women and girl’s section at the club. On three occasions there has been a period or 4-5 years where there has been one team but invariably, as key players left, the club reverted to no women’s section at all. Now that all looks to be changing as for the third season in a row the women and girl’s section has expanded so we now have a Senior Premier Reserve, Under 16, and two Under 11 teams. Hopefully, we will be able to build even more depth over the seasons ahead.

Black Cap giving some encouragement to our new girls’ section.

Meet the Black Caps Day One positive Covid-19 did provide was a rare opportunity to bring our Black Caps together to support the junior club. The poster says it all.

Clubroom renovations

All members will be well aware that the clubrooms have been looking a bit old and run down for some time now. The management committee has been wrestling with the issue of what to do for some time as the building is now over 50 years old and realistically has a limited lifespan going forward.

Options for a major redevelopment are currently under consideration and members should be aware that in the next few years a proposal is likely to be presented to the membership regarding a major redevelopment. But realistically any work in this regard is at least five years away, so in the interim the committee has decided to undertake limited, but significant, renovations over the winter months.

Included within the work being undertaken is the replacement of the upstairs balcony, repairs to the leak in the upstairs lounge roof, an expansion of the Premier team changing room, upgrading of the visitors’ team changing room, replacing the balustrades around the downstairs deck and painting and re-carpeting of the downstairs lounge.

The overall cost of the total works will be well in excess of $50,000 but would have been much more without the volunteer labour supplied over several winter working bees. In this regard special mention to the Michael, Ginny and Kevin Barry who undertook an enormous amount of work.

PART THREE SENIOR STATISTICS & REPORTS

Premier Team Report

The 2020/21 season was one massive rollercoaster ride, on one hand we had the disappointment of our one-day campaign, which ended with us unfortunately being relegated for next season. On the other, we had the amazing joy of bringing the Hedley Howarth two-day trophy back to the club, clinching it in spectacular fashion in the very last half an hour of the season. Certainly, one to cherish with all that hard work and commitment paying off.

The season started as we left off with a convincing two-day win in the first game, Tristan Payle setting the tone for the rest of the season with a brilliant 129 to get the competition underway. We then backed that up with a gutsy win against North Shore managing to defend 127. To finish off the first half of the competition we played Grafton, this is where we saw the emergence of Adi Ashok who on premier debut took 7 wickets in each innings to bowl us to an outright victory. This was just a taste of what was to come with him continuing to dominate throughout the season ending with over 50 wickets.

Next it was on to the one-day competition where we didn’t quite find our groove, unfortunately we were unable to string any real momentum together throughout the competition which left us trying to play catch up. Sadly, we couldn’t quite manage to get enough wins on the board and now have extra motivation going into next season to get us back up into the top 8.

The 20/20 campaign followed that of the one-day stuff, with some great wins in between and some not so good stuff. We managed to notch up a few wins but couldn’t do enough to get ourselves into the play offs. One major highlight being Martin Guptill dropping in to play a game and scoring a hundred against Kumeu in front of a big crowd of juniors at the club.

We finished the season off with the remainder of the two-day competition with us sitting top of the table. We got a couple of wins against Papatoetoe and Takapuna while going down to Parnell in a close-run chase, that left us needing a first innings win against University in the final game to win the competition. What would unfold would be one of the most emotionally draining days we have ever had. Firstly, the pain of losing first innings and with that a chance at the title. Secondly, being given the huge task of chasing down 254 in 30 overs for a second chance to win the title. Thankfully, we were able to sit back and watch George “Georgeeee” Hanham play the innings of a lifetime and in the process notching up his first premier hundred to win us the title with 3 overs to spare.

Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out throughout the year, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it wasn’t for you giving up your valuable time. To the supporters that show up every week and ride the same highs and lows we do thank you, we are so fortunate to have such dedicated people cheering us on throughout the year.

I am looking forward to next season and the continued success to come.

Premier Reserve Women Team Report

The Premier Reserve Women’s team was eager to get back into cricket after an abrupt end to the previous season and a winter in and out of lockdown. For most of us, it was our second summer playing together in the grade.

The season started with a T20 Championship competition in which all 14 teams in the Premier Reserve grade were split into two pools. We recorded good wins against Papatoetoe and Kumeu during this competition and ended up in the middle of our pool, putting us in the T20 Minor Championship league for the next round of games.

The T20 Minor Championship began in mid-December. We came up against some tough teams in this incomplete round robin but managed two more wins against Kumeu and Mangere Pukapura. A highlight of this round was our 110 run win over Kumeu where Divyanshi Chauhan took six wickets for 10 runs. Another highlight came after Christmas at Melville Park when we came close to toppling the top of the table Takapuna team. We fell just five runs short of their 179, with Laila Jeeru contributing 87 with the bat.

We were disappointed to finish fifth of eight teams in the T20 Minor Championship but recorded some good individual results in this competition and our players were well- represented on the Auckland Cricket leaderboard. Divyanshi was the top wicket taker for the competition with Anika Tauwhare coming in at number four. Laila was second top run scorer with Shahana Samadi, Kim Fulton, and Faith Lynch also among the top ten batters. For the last two games of the season, we opted to try out the 35 over format. We lost both of these games but ended the season on a high with Laila scoring 93 chasing Papatoetoe’s impressive 245 in our final game.

A number of our players were selected to play for the Western Districts teams this season. Laila captained the under 19 team and was also selected to be part of the under 19 Auckland Development Camp. Anika was selected for the under 15 Auckland Development Camp. 18

Divyanshi was the first recipient of the new SNLCC Women's Player of the Year award at the Cricketer of the Year Dinner in April. Our team awards went to Laila for Ideal Player and Shahana for Most Improved player.

We struggled with numbers this season but should be able to move up the points table next summer if we can bring in a few more full-time players to build on the strong core we have developed over the past two seasons.

Thanks to the players from our younger squad who helped us out when our numbers were low. Special thanks also to Trevor Payle for coaching us on Monday nights and dads Wasi, Adrian, and Brad for helping us out on game days.

The 2020/21 season was a rollercoaster for the Premier Reserve Majors. While we experienced some success in both white ball formats, we still found ourselves in a relegation battle come the final days of the two-day campaign. Despite having a young and inexperienced squad, the boys pulled through the gruelling season with a few lads putting in some crucial performances and putting their names up as future premier players.

There was a cloud of uncertainty as we entered pre-season under the new Covid environment we found ourselves living in. Despite the restrictions, coach Jonny Bassett- Graham got the boys primed and raring to go when the season kicked off in late October. The opening round saw us pinned against newly promoted Grafton in the two day competition. Batting first in tricky conditions, Steve Martin hit an unbeaten half in his first match for the club to get the boys in a great position to start us off with a win. Unfortunately, rain intervened on both days forcing the match to end in a disappointing draw. Following a few tough days in the field in the following red ball fixtures, the boys notched up their first win of the season in the one-day format, with Steve starring again with a season high 92 on what can only be described as a minefield of a wicket. On the final weekend before the Christmas break, we grabbed two wins in the T20 competition which all but booked a ticket to the semi-final.

Post-Christmas the boys grabbed some crucial wins. We were able to defend two relatively modest totals against both strong Cornwall Reserve outfits on our home patch. But the highlight of the season would have to be defending 102 against North Shore on the number 2 at the Ken, in what was a gutsy effort from a young bowling attack. Led by a five-for from Rajdeep Dabhi, it was a fitting way to bounce back from the T20 semi-final defeat to the same opposition the weekend prior. That string of good results saw us sneak into the one- day semi-finals against the arch-rivals Eden Roskill. Unfortunately, we were beaten by the better side on the day but it a great experience for the young group.

With the focus back onto red ball cricket for the remainder of the season, we found ourselves sitting on the bottom of the table requiring a few good results to secure our safety. A massive outright win, by an innings away at North Shore saw the boys take a step in the right direction. New face Suhas Shivamurthy starred with 82 at the top of the order. It wouldn’t be a great game against North Shore without Rajdeep Dabhi being in the wickets again, picking up 9 for the match. Despite a few good results in other matches, it still came

20 down to the final game of the season at home against a strong Papatoetoe side. Batting first, the boys put up 258 led by another half century from the ever-reliable Shikhar Verma and a maiden half century from young gun Jonah Jakkula. With a good score on the board, we knew we had a good chance to pick up the necessary points to keep us away from relegation. On the back of Liam Smith’s, five-for the boys restricted Papatoetoe to 225/9 off their 80 overs. In the end the draw was enough to keep us safe and end what was a topsy- turvy season.

Looking back on what was a challenging season, it was clear that the squad is in a rebuilding phase. With a wealth of ripe talent coming through the club, I have no doubt that under the right leadership this group can overcome the noted lack of experience in the previous years to get ourselves back to the top of the competitions. A number of these youngsters grabbed their opportunities in the lower grades and earnt their Majors debuts. The most notable of them was Aaron Da Costa who earned his spot in the second half on the season with plenty of crucial runs and wickets and rightfully walked away with the Ideal Team Member award for all the hard work he put in. Despite the lack of experience, one regular stood up when it mattered most. Rajdeep Dabhi took crucial wickets and played a few important cameos in important games and deservedly took away the Player of the Year award.

Finally, I want to make a few special thanks. Firstly, I want to thank coach Jonny Bassett- Graham and Trevor Payle for all their efforts with both squads throughout the season, as well as passing on all their wealth of knowledge and endless support through the many challenges that were faced this season. Secondly, I want to thank all the efforts of the players from both squads. Every weekend each one of you wore the flying ice cream with pride and gave it your all and everyone should be proud of their efforts and achievements this season. Thirdly, I want to thank Sue and her staff from Sissy’s Kitchen and our Groundsmen Nigel for their week-in week-out efforts to always supply us with the best facilities. Finally, to Chalky. A club legend who has done more than his fair share for the club over a number of years. A very special thank you for always making sure our pitches are covered and in the best possible condition, and always supporting the club through thick and thin. We are extremely lucky to have a man like you in our club.

That is a wrap, signing out for the 2020/21 season.

Premier Reserves Minors Team Report After last season’s promotion from third grade cricket to Premiere Reserve Minors, our young squad faced a tough season in order to ensure Suburbs kept three teams across the top three grades in Auckland Cricket. An achievement boasted by very few clubs. However, from the outset a combined cross pool majors and minors one day competition meant this would be a tough ask.

Once again, a young squad with plenty of talent, excitement and enthusiasm hit the ground running when put through their paces during a tough fitness orientated pre-season, followed by a couple of key hit outs in warm up games to put the squad in the best place to compete against some of the best reserve grade teams and a scattering of premier players.

Throughout the season the Reserve Minors performed to a high standard week to week, but it was only enough to secure 7th place in both the one- and two-day competitions. Despite pulling off significant two day outright and one day victories against North Shore. Highlights for the season can also proudly be taken from a very narrow loss to Papatoetoe’s Reserve Majors and the salvaging of a gutsy draw against an incredibly strong Howick Parkuranga team in the two-day competition, both occurring on the number one at Ken Maunder Park. Individually, Haro Singh and Rohann da Silva provided outstanding individual performances for the team with the two scoring multiple centuries between them. Results aside, the culture and brotherhood that continued to thrive and gel the group together only got stronger in the face of a tough season.

As with being the third highest team in the club the squad was pushed to its limits through players moving up the grades. Despite a huge loss of talent to the Reserve Majors the Minors can be and are proud of what they achieved. The movement of players did allow for the young talent to showcase their skills for the Reserve Majors, in particular Aaron Da Costa who walked away with the clubs top youth award.

As the curtain came down on another season it also came down on a number of players involvement with the Reserve Minors squad. Sadly Anand Mitha, Dan O’Brien and Randi Randeniya are all moving on to new and exciting chapters in their lives. And Trevor Payle will no longer be able to coach the team as he will be focusing on coaching the emerging women’s section of the club. As a squad we cannot thank them all enough for their continued commitment, experience, and selflessness they brought to the group.

A massive thank you needs to be extended to all involved in the Minors squad for their commitment and dedication to the cause, the club for supporting us throughout the season and the groundsman. Finally, Trevor Payle deserves significant recognition for his tireless efforts, equipment, and nurture that he has contributed to the Minors squad over the last couple of years, he has left some very big shoes to fill!

Full Club Leader Boards 2020-21

While the club still tries to gather full team statistics from all grades each season, it is no longer possible to feature all these team statistics in the annual report as we now have over 70 teams and it is increasingly difficult to get statistics from most teams.

Instead, each year in the Annual Report we are featuring the Leader Boards from all grades as compiled by CricHQ. This approach allows leading performers from Premier, Senior and Junior Cricket all to be displayed together which makes for some interesting reading.

These figures will only be as accurate and complete as the scorecards entered into CricHQ by each team over the season so we hope this encourages teams to enter their full scoreboard. Below we feature all batters who scored 200 or more runs and all bowlers who took 15 or more wickets across the season.

PART 4 CLUB HISTORY & STATISTICS

Where it all began Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club is still relatively young having just finished our 49th season. We were formed in 1972 as a result of the amalgamation of the Suburbs and the Blockhouse Bay - New Lynn Clubs, both old clubs with proud traditions.

In the early years Suburbs New Lynn was based at the Rosebank Road (now Eastdale Reserve) ground. We moved to Ken Maunder Park in the mid-1970’s and together with the Western Districts Hockey Club built the pavilion which has been our headquarters ever since. The pavilion was built through club labour, a shining testimony to the commitment of the early members.

For 30 years the cricket and hockey clubs shared Ken Maunder Park with the Lynn-Avon Football Club which had its own separate clubrooms. In the 1990s Western District Hockey moved its base away from Ken Maunder as all club hockey began to be played on artificial turf. Then in 2010 in a major joint venture between cricket, football and the council the football clubrooms were demolished and replaced with a magnificent indoor training centre to be used by both clubs and the community.

At the same time the cricket clubrooms became home to both clubs and an independent Ken Maunder Park Trust was created to manage both the indoor training centre and the clubrooms.

Playing Success Through the 1970’s and 1980’s Suburbs New Lynn fielded strong sides producing many Auckland representatives from whom Hedley Howarth, , John Reid, Peter Webb and Stuart Gillespie went on to play for New Zealand.

The club’s first ‘golden age’ took place in the 1980s. We won the Premier Two Day Championship in 1980-81 and then again in 1984-85. In that amazing season Suburbs won the Two Day and One Day Championships as well as the Grosvenor Cup for best fielding team. Suburbs also finished runners-up in the two day championship in 1987-88 and 1990-91.

The second ‘golden age’ arrived in the late 2000’s. In the 2008-09 season for the first time in 25 years the club won the Hedley Howarth Trophy for the Premier Two-Day Championship. This was the beginning of an amazing run for the club’s Premier side and was followed up with T20 titles in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2014-15, 2016-17. Further Two-Day Championships were added in 2011-12, 2013-14 and now in 2020-2021. The Cup for the Premier One-Day title was also won in the 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2019-20.

SNLCC was also awarded the Club Championship for the leading Principal Club in Auckland in the 2011-12 season. This period also saw a number of New Zealand representatives emerge, including Martin Guptill, Reece Young, , Michael Bates, Jimmy Neesham, Jeet Raval, Ajaz Patel and most recently Kyle Jamieson.

Statistical History In the early 1980’s work was started on a Club Statistical History. By going back through the Annual Reports a profile on every player to represent Suburbs New Lynn was formed. Each year this file is updated from the latest Annual Report (we are dependent on the quality of statistics lodged on CricHQ by team captains). Record partnerships and season aggregates are also recorded. Most cricketers are statistically minded and the “Hall of Legends” have provided a lot of interest.

Over the last 24 months we have reviewed the Annual Reports over the last 20 years and discovered that a number of players have actually reached these landmarks but they had been overlooked in this Career Records section. This led to an additional 30 players being added to the batting and 75 players to the bowling.

We have also lowered the career bowling qualification level to 100 wickets as history has shown this to be a fairer comparison to 2000 runs.

In the records below current players are shown in red.

PART FIVE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Treasurer’s Report 2020-2021

Introduction The unknown impacts of Covid –19 had led to budgets for the 2020-2021 season reflecting a sight loss. The expectations were a drop in funding being available for the club and its activities and also a drop in playing numbers. The reality has proved somewhat different, and the club has posted a healthy profit of $39k. This is despite additional costs being incurred as the club continues to move to a more professional approach to many activities. Club manager salary has increased as more responsibilities are added to the role and the bar activities are now run by paid staff. Extra costs have to a large degree been offset by increases in revenue as a result of these activities

Bar takings were up by nearly $8k, though the overall profit was slightly down on the previous year ($700.00) due primarily to the cost of the paid bar staff as shown in the Profit & Loss statement.

The increasing move to online subscriptions for requirements, such as webhosting and online promotion has seen the club set up a credit card. This has allowed for much easy tracking and coding of such services and for incidental purchases.

The move to an increasing approach to the financial management of the club has seen the beginning of new coding options for revenue and costs to more accurately reflect and track club finances. An example highlighted in the profit in loss. Previously donations and fundraising were all recorded together under donations. This year fundraising and donations have been separated out for more accurate tracking of such revenue. This approach, allowing for more transparency around the sources of club revenue and cost, will continue.

To support the Ken Maunder Park Community Trust, in particular for the redevelopment of the Club rooms, SNLCC made a loan of $24k to the Trust at the end of the season. This is reflected in the balance sheet as Loan No.2 as a non-current asset. It is expected that further loans will be made to the Trust during the next season as works commence on the club rooms.

Revenue - $288,902 Up $19.2k on previous season

Revenue was strong for the year, far exceeding the originally budgeted loss. The club continues to rely heavily on Membership Fees, Community Grants and ACA Grants, making up 80% ($231.5k) of the revenue of the club. Other revenue sources brought in $57.3k, up $9k on the previous year. The club received $4k worth of Government subsidy as a result of the Covid-19 to support the salary of the club manager. SNLCC had offered to return the money at the start of the season however this offer was politely declined.

Membership Fees Membership fees ($96.5k) were similar to last year, down slightly by $1.4k.

Community Grants The real success for the season was community grants ($85.6k), and the team within the committee responsible for the applications deserves the credit with new grant sources utilised. Grants were up by $16k on the previous year. The bulk of the community grants are allocated to specific costs and purchases, for example club manager salary, cricket balls and playing equipment so are not used for general expenses. There is auditing of the application of the community grants that is undertaken by the subgroup within the committee. 43

The club would like to acknowledge the support and community grants received from: • NZCT • Aktive • West Auckland Trust Services • Grassroots • Trusts Community Foundation • Four Winds Foundation • TAB

ACA Grants The ACA Grants are reflective of the playing numbers though this total was impacted mildly by the overall effects of COVID-19, down $3.5k on the previous year.

Other Revenue The separation of true donations and fundraising activities will increase the transparency around such activities.

Sponsorship was up $3.5k to a total of $14.8k with a noticeable increase in support via Cricket Express including rebates from club member purchases. In particular, the club would like to acknowledge the contributions of the following organisations:

• Cricket Express • Glover Real Estate • Little India

Amongst the revenue sources, Bar Takings were up noticeably by $8k. Player Development Fees continue to decline as a result of a changing approach to how these are dealt with, now charged directly to the player rather than via SNLCC. The costs for Player Development are no longer incurred as a result.

Cost of Sales & Expenses Total expenses increased $4k (1.19%). This displays excellent cost control overall as the Club Manager Salary increased due to the increase scope of the role and paid bar staff wages were paid for the first time. Along with Club Manager salary, Coaching, cricket balls, ACA affiliation fees and indoor centre hireage were the club’s largest expenses in 2020-2021.

Key expense changes are outlined below. Of note Club Manager salary was increased, cricket balls increased as well as communication costs as the club invests in means to communicate with and attract players.

• Club Manager (up $10k): a considerable increase reflective on an increase in overall hours and responsibility for the role. Much of this salary is covered directly by Community Grants. • Cricket Balls (up $7k): this reflects an increase in playing teams and changes by the ACA for the type of balls used for each grade meaning that existing ball stock has a limited stream of grades to be applied to. Community Grants cover the much of the cost for cricket balls. • Coaching (down $5k): Coaching costs were well controlled this year despite the high level of teams. The reduction was in the junior coaching, senior coaching costs was slightly up. • Playing equipment (down $5k): After considerable spend made on equipment last year, the club was able to reduce the spend on equipment this past season. • Communications (Down $1.8k): the club continues to invest heavily in communications with the live streaming of games at Ken Maunder Park (My Action Replay) as well as electronic communications and web hosting, signage and flyers to promote the club to schools and the wider public. • Clothing (Up $1.1k): Not a great change from the previous season. The club still has a strong stock of clothing from the purchases in the 2018-2019 season • Prizegiving (Up $2.8k): Due to Covid-19 curtailing prize giving for the previous season, the costs for last year were negligible. Some of the costs related to last season were incurred this year, such as the additional engraving of some awards.

Closing remarks

The club continues to apply increased professionalism and transparency to their financial activities. As a collective the committee is controlling expenses while seeking to increase revenue. The club could still benefit from increasing revenue from outside of the traditional sources however the club continues to build a strong financial position. This position is exemplified by the club able to provide support to Ken Maunder Park Community Trust to maintain and enhance the player and community experience with improvements to be made to the club rooms.

The club has $50k on term deposit and still maintains a healthy cash balance in the operating account.
