VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2 Southern Hills Republican Women PAGE 3 STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS—When I met Roland Reagan When I think of President Ronald Reagan, I think of a man with class. Case in point, it was one year after the shooting, fall of 1982/3, and being a Temp. on the detail for one month, I was on the second floor of the White House, and all of a sudden, a transmission came over our radios, Sulliman; Rawhide command post; Rawhide and VP (George H.W. Bush) (I will not provide his codename), want to talk, let us know when they are done. Picture this, I am on the second floor of the W.H., and President Reagan and VP Bush want to talk alone, in the hallway, with no staff or anyone else around. The leaders of our country wanted to talk alone, and it was just the three of us. I was only a few feet away from them, and there was not, anyone, and I mean anyone within shouting dis- tance. After what seemed like a long time, the President and VP concluded their private conversation. They both looked at me, and President Reagan looked at me and thanked me. The next procedure was to talk into my hand (radio), and advise the command post that “Rawhide was moving”. As I said before, President Reagan was a class guy.

Robert Sulliman ( EDITOR’S NOTE: Bob Sulliman, a former Secret Service Agent and member of the White House Detail, is an Associate Member of our Club and the husband of our club president.) Meeting Ronald Reagan The first time we met President Reagan was on our first trip to Washington, D.C. It was just before Christmas in 1983. The weather was perfect and the city was absolutely beautiful all decorated for Christmas and clear blue skies. We went to the White House that morning and were escorted to George’s brother’s Office, Ed Meese. At the time, Ed was serving as the Counselor to the President. Our meeting was delayed as President Reagan was in a meeting in the Oval office. We were waiting just outside the oval office with Ed when Vice President George Bush came by. Ed introduced us and Vice President Bush immediately escorted us into his office to wait until President Reagan was free. We spent several minutes with him and he was so cordial and friendly. He was especially proud of the Christmas tree in his office that was decorated with ornaments made by disabled children from all over the . This extra time with the Vice President made a lasting impression on us. As we finally stepped into the Oval Office, we were almost speechless, but the President was not. I remember the big smile on Ed’s face as he proudly introduced his brother and me to the President of the United States. George was the Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time and presented the President with a California personalized license plate. This was the year that the Summer Olympics had been held in . We chatted with him about California and his friend, Governor George Deukmejian, whom both George and I worked for at the time. There were some jovial comments about the trouble DMV had trying to work with the International Olympic Committee to au- thorize the production of these special license plates. President Reagan remembered well the problems of California’s bureaucracy from his days as California’s governor and he was also familiar with the even larger bureaucracy of the IIOC. We came away from our meeting knowing that Ronald Reagan had lived up to every expectation we had of him and more. He was warm and friendly and seemed genuinely pleased to be meeting some of Ed’s relatives. It was an awesome day for us, meeting not only President Reagan but also Vice Presi- dent George Bush too. I worked for a brief period helping to advance events in California af- ter he was elected to the Presidency; and then spent the remaining years of his Administra- tion working for California’s Governor and Mrs. George Deukmejian, which led to further op- portunities for interaction. My lasting impression is of a pleasant, courteous man. He once offered encouragement to me at a particularly difficult event, and as he reached out his hand to me, our photo was snapped. It was the worst photo I have ever taken, and I never display it – but I recall it as one my nicest photos because it was only taken because of the President’s kindness. Another special memory stands out from November 1984 a few days before his re- election. The President and Nancy were at the Sacramento Capitol for a rally, and a private meeting and photo session was arranged with the Governor’s staff. We were so impressed with his willingness to take time out to meet us, and to reunite with some of his former staff who were still working there. Nancy had taken a bad fall the night before, and instead of canceling the planned session, they continued on as the former show business troopers they were – with the President literally holding up Nancy during the photo shoot so she wouldn’t collapse. I will always remember the love and concern he showed for her, and the graciousness he showed to all of us. We renamed the Governor’s Cabinet Room for him at that time, and it seems like such a small honor for such a giant of a man. Yet it is the small gestures that I re- call from him; and I hope he felt the appreciation and respect that our small gesture was meant to convey‖. Linda Krivec (EDITOR’S NOTE: Linda Krivec is a Charter Member of our club and served on its first Board of Directors.)

ONE BRIEF MOMENT I met Ronald Reagan only once for one brief moment. It was sometime in the late 70s, between his terms as Governor of California and his election as President of the United States. He was hosting a political radio show and gave speeches all over the country. My family’s busi- ness in Reno, sponsored his radio show on our local station. The Reno Opera held a fund raiser and Ronald Reagan was the speaker. We weren’t really opera fans, but we had to go see Ronald Reagan. The room was packed with all the lead- ers of the community, both political and business. They were there, both conservatives and lib- erals. After dinner Ronald Reagan was introduced. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but he was repeatedly interrupted by applause and standing ovations. Everyone, Republican and Democrat alike, was on their feet during most of his speech. The room was filled with spirit and energy. After the speech, the people in the audience rushed forward to speak to him and to shake his hand. I stood in line determined to meet this man face to face. And finally it was my turn. I remember his smile, his brown suit and the fact that I could hardly speak for the emo- tion. I was barely able to choke out that we were one of his sponsors. I’m not even sure he heard me, but he did smile. His speech filled me with hope for the future and love for my coun- try. THE HECKS IN WASHINGTON By: Lisa Heck January was certainly a whirlwind for us, starting with the Congres- sional swearing in ceremony for Congressman Joe Heck. We were so proud of him, and blessed to have many friends and family attend to show their love and support. Our pastor from St. Francis in Henderson, Fr. Greg Gordon was on hand to formally bless our D.C. office and get Joe off to a good start. How lucky we were to have the opportunity to start out in that fashion. We spent time getting the office in order and receiving well wishers. It was three days of ceremonies, meet and greets followed by the beginning of the session. Joe seems to be a natural statesman, delving into his work right from the start. He was named to the Steering Committee as only 1 of three freshman, elected by his peers. They were responsible for vetting and assigning the appropriate people to Chair each committee, and they did a remarkable job. Next, he was appointed personally by Speak Boehner to be on the prestigious Intelligence Committee as the only freshman to have held that position. So it seems appropriate to say he has made a good impression in D.C already! Next we had a Republican Retreat for 3 days that included many wonderful speakers to educate both the Con- gressional members and spouses on numerous topics that included security issues for both the D.C. office and the district offices, employee issues, voting procedures, and outlook for the 2012 elections. So much information that was both very helpful and appreciated. And did I mention how many times I have gotten lost trying to navigate in the corridors of the Cannon building as well as the Capitol? Too numerous to count! I will also be attending a class to learn how to give a tour of the Capitol and look forward to meeting Nevadans when they visit. Joe was fortunate to secure an office right down the hall from Congressman Dean Heller’s, who has been extremely helpful to both Joe and myself, as well as our staff. We really appreciated that. We are getting settled into our respective roles, and Joe is loving every moment. I find it hard to juggle the multiple responsibilities of home and spouse tasks expected of me, but I am getting the hang of it quickly. With help from our older girls, it has been a bit easier to keep our son Joey on an uninter- rupted schedule, and he has been so understanding. A big thanks to those of you who have called to offer help and done small things that have made a immense difference. We are truly blessed to have so many friends who have been there for us since the beginning, and continue to do so. November was a sweep for our party because people finally figured out that broken promises mean something, and we won’t stand by and tolerate it. Just when you seem to have lost faith in voters and their logic , they seem to pull through when it matters. That does not mean we should become too confident for 2012. We Republicans are poised to take the U.S. Senate and make significant moves in the State Legislature, which we should not take for granted. We will need your continued dedication and hard work for the next elec- tion! Only then will we make the gains we need to in order to get this country back in or- der and flourish! We invite you to celebrate our new District Office Grand opening on Tue, February 1, 5pm – 7pm at 8485 W. Sunset Road, Las Vegas, NV 89113, in the Sunset Hills Plaza, at the 215 and Sunset.
