3 THE STORY BEHIND A GREAT SONG

Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and he said that when he and a million other guys first heard her sing "God Bless America " on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two.

Here are the facts... The link at the bottom will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". But before you watch it, you should also know the story behind the first public showing of the song.

The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans.

This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers, and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith.

Kate was also large; plus size, as we now say, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings". Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV, but with her voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time.

Kate was also patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring . She had hope for America , and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (who also wrote "White Christmas") and asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their country. When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her.

He went to his files and found a song that he had written, but never published, 22 years before - way back in 1917. He gave it to her and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from God Bless America . Any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.

This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for the very first time, and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background still singing, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, "You're In The Army Now." At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper; it's Ronald Reagan.

To this day, God Bless America stirs our patriotic feelings and pride in our country. Back in 1940, when Kate Smith went looking for a song to raise the spirits of her fellow Americans, I doubt whether she realized just how successful the results would be for her fellow Americans during those years of hardship and worry..... and for many generations of Americans to follow.

Now that you know the story of the song, I hope you'll enjoy it and treasure it even more. Many people don't know there's a lead in to the song since it usually starts with "God Bless America ....." So here's the entire song as originally sung.....ENJOY!

Let us pray God still does Bless America , and it's not too late.

We decided that this was an event we did not want to miss. So when the opportunity presented itself we said YES, let’s do this. The trip was talked about by Wayne Allyn Root on his afternoon radio broadcast and a package was being offered to interested people. The arrangements were being made by Rob Lauer, Owner, News Max TV, Vegas. It included airfare, 3 night hotel stay, transportation to and from the hotel, and a pre-night inaugural dinner at the Washington Plaza Hotel, hosted by Wayne Allyn Root.

On the morning of the 18th, we gathered at the gate to await the flight. Hoping to see some people we would know, we recognized some rather prominent fellow Republicans. There was Wayne Allyn Root with his guest radio host, Megan Barth and Rob Lauer. Then we were able to say hello to Mo Karas and , our Attorney General with his wife and children, and Jim Marchant, Assemblyman from District 37 and an Associate member of SHRW.

We flew to our Nation’s Capitol (landing at Baltimore’s Thurgood Marshall Airport) in four hours arriving late afternoon. Settling in was done quite easily by a well-run operation, thanks to Rob.

On the 19th we had a wonderful day of sightseeing taking in some of the historical monuments and sites. We made a short stop at the Ford Theatre, and saw the house directly across the street where President Lincoln died after being shot while watching the play “Our Country Cousin”.

Our next stop took us to Arlington National Cemetery where we witnessed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers. That same day Donald Trump and Michael Pence placed a wreath upon the Tomb. (However, that was not open to the public). Being in Arlington and seeing those rows, upon rows, upon rows of graves makes you realize how many wonderful American men and women have died defending our Country and protecting our lives and the freedoms we cherish. Truly one walks away feeling a deep sense of somberness, humility, and gratitude.

Close to Arlington National Cemetery stands the Iwo Jima Memorial. The dedication inscription on its base reads “ Uncommon Valor Was A Common Virture”. The impression when looking at the sculpture is sheer power. The power of will, the power of determination, the power of fortitude. These soldiers are working to raise our Flag on this rocky hilltop, and their individual efforts coalese into one. It is staggeringly powerful because it displays the heart and valor of these American soldiers.

DID YOU KNOW By: Sydney Ingram History shows that those of us who feel that this election has been the most divisive in America’s history are wrong. An opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal by Joseph Rago points out these interesting historical facts. …Our government is set up so we are divided, because the point of a democracy is to reconcile different interests. …We have progressed if you count politicians not killing each other as progress. When Vice President Cheney shot that man, it was an accident. When Burr shot Hamilton it was intentional. …We’ve had far more disturbing elections—remember 1968 with the assignation off Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy and 1969 when militants took over the student union at Cornell. …Those who say that the Republican Party is going to break up after this are likely wrong. The last time a major party disappeared, the Whigs, was in the 1850’s. We’ve been stuck with the Democrats and the Republicans ever since. …We’ve always had problems and we’ve always overcome them—think communism, stagflation, Watergate, Vietnam to name a few. Eventually rationality wins out, progress happens and problems are solved. …We need to trust the genius of the Constitution’s federalist separation of powers. American democracy is incredibly strong, and the republic will survive. The above is just a small sampling of Joseph Rago’s article titled “ History Repeats as Farce, Then as 2016” in the WSJ, November 5-6, 2016 edition. 7 7 https://twitter.com/sohillsrw www.SHRWhendersonrepublicanwomen. com
