VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2 Southern Hills Republican Women PAGE 3 STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS—When I met Roland Reagan When I think of President Ronald Reagan, I think of a man with class. Case in point, it was one year after the shooting, fall of 1982/3, and being a Temp. on the detail for one month, I was on the second floor of the White House, and all of a sudden, a transmission came over our radios, Sulliman; Rawhide command post; Rawhide and VP (George H.W. Bush) (I will not provide his codename), want to talk, let us know when they are done. Picture this, I am on the second floor of the W.H., and President Reagan and VP Bush want to talk alone, in the hallway, with no staff or anyone else around. The leaders of our country wanted to talk alone, and it was just the three of us. I was only a few feet away from them, and there was not, anyone, and I mean anyone within shouting dis- tance. After what seemed like a long time, the President and VP concluded their private conversation. They both looked at me, and President Reagan looked at me and thanked me. The next procedure was to talk into my hand (radio), and advise the command post that “Rawhide was moving”. As I said before, President Reagan was a class guy. Robert Sulliman ( EDITOR’S NOTE: Bob Sulliman, a former Secret Service Agent and member of the White House Detail, is an Associate Member of our Club and the husband of our club president.) Meeting Ronald Reagan The first time we met President Reagan was on our first trip to Washington, D.C. It was just before Christmas in 1983. The weather was perfect and the city was absolutely beautiful all decorated for Christmas and clear blue skies. We went to the White House that morning and were escorted to George’s brother’s Office, Ed Meese. At the time, Ed was serving as the Counselor to the President. Our meeting was delayed as President Reagan was in a meeting in the Oval office. We were waiting just outside the oval office with Ed when Vice President George Bush came by. Ed introduced us and Vice President Bush immediately escorted us into his office to wait until President Reagan was free. We spent several minutes with him and he was so cordial and friendly. He was especially proud of the Christmas tree in his office that was decorated with ornaments made by disabled children from all over the United States. This extra time with the Vice President made a lasting impression on us. As we finally stepped into the Oval Office, we were almost speechless, but the President was not. I remember the big smile on Ed’s face as he proudly introduced his brother and me to the President of the United States. George was the Director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles at the time and presented the President with a California personalized license plate. This was the year that the Summer Olympics had been held in Los Angeles. We chatted with him about California and his friend, Governor George Deukmejian, whom both George and I worked for at the time. There were some jovial comments about the trouble DMV had trying to work with the International Olympic Committee to au- thorize the production of these special license plates. President Reagan remembered well the problems of California’s bureaucracy from his days as California’s governor and he was also familiar with the even larger bureaucracy of the IIOC. We came away from our meeting knowing that Ronald Reagan had lived up to every expectation we had of him and more. He was warm and friendly and seemed genuinely pleased to be meeting some of Ed’s relatives. It was an awesome day for us, meeting not only President Reagan but also Vice Presi- dent George Bush too.
