Regional (5/16/02 - No. 1 UCLA 3, Liberty 0; UMBC 7, Liberty 1) The Lady Flames competed against top-ranked UCLA in their first-ever NCAA Regional game, May 16, 2002 in Columbia, S.C. The Bruins broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, pulling away for a 3-0 win. The Lady Flames then fell to UMBC, 7-1, in an elimination game.

2011 NCAA Knoxville, Tenn. Regional (5/20/11 - No. 5 Tennessee 8, Liberty 0 (5); No. 19 Georgia Tech 4, Liberty 3) In the first game of the 2011 NCAA Knoxville Regional, Liberty held No. 14 Tennessee to one run through four innings, before the Lady Vols scored seven times in the fifth for an 8-0 victory. Facing elimination the next day, Liberty led No. 19 Georgia Tech, 2-1, after three innings before the Yellow Jackets rallied to win, 4-3, and eliminate the Lady Flames.

2017 NISC Champions Hosting postseason play for the first time, Liberty won its first-ever postseason championship in softball, capturing the 2017 Na- tional Invitational Softball Championship title. The Lady Flames won the NISC Regional Round at home, defeating Ohio, 4-3 in the Regional Championship “if neccesary” game. After losing to Weber State in the opening game of the National Round, the Lady Flames won five straight elimination games, including three on the final day. Liberty claimed the winner-take-all final, 3-1, over Lamar on May 24. Liberty was at its best in tight situations, going 6-0 when facing elimination during the tournament. Junior Tori Zavodny was named the NISC MVP, and she was joined on the all-tournament team by Amber Bishop (2B) and pitcher Kenzie Friesen.

2018 NCAA Columbia, S.C. Regional (5/18/18 - Liberty 2, No. 24 Hofstra 0 (10); 5/19/18 - Liberty 3, No. 10 South Carolina 1; 5/20/18 - No. 10 South Carolina 2, Liberty 0; No. 10 South Carolina 5, Liberty 0) Liberty made a splash in the 2018 NCAA Columbia Regional, coming within one win of making the team’s first appearance in a Super Regional. The Lady Flames won their first two games (2-0 in 10 innings over No. 24/24 Hofstra, 3-1 over No. 11/10 South Caro- lina) before falling twice to South Carolina in the Regional Final. Liberty’s win over Hofstra was the first NCAA Regional game victory in program history, and first win over a nationally-ranked team since 2007. The Lady Flames also qualified for the NCAA Regional Final for the first time, and became the first Big South team to defeat a Regional host. The Lady Flames won a program-record 19 straight games, beginning on April 14 and ending in the NCAA Columbia Regional Final. It was the longest active winning streak in NCAA Division I softball at the time, and tied for the eighth longest in the nation at any point in the season.

2019 NISC Lynchburg Regional Liberty served as an NISC Regional host for the second time, hosting Appalachian State, George Washington, Kent State, Mar- shall and Rutgers. The Lady Flames went 3-0, outscoring opponents 12-0 for the tournament. Liberty opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Rutgers, getting a four-hitter from Chase Cassady. Julia DiMartino tossed a three-hitter in a 4-0 win over Kent State, getting a two-run single from Alexis Erich and two-run homer by Madison Via. The Lady Flames claimed the Regional title against Marshall, 7-0, getting 10 hits to back up a Cassady three-hitter. Cassady was named Regional MVP, while Amber and Autumn Bishop joined Madison Via on the all-tournament team.

Liberty in the Postseason Play By the Numbers 1 - Current Liberty head coach Dot Richardson played in the first-ever NCAA Women’s College World Series, helping UCLA win its first of 11 NCAA titles to date in 1982. She made her first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a head coach last year and was one of five coaches who led teams in the 2018 Big South Softball Championship who won NCAA Division I national championships as players. Richardson’s Lady Flames won the first-ever NISC title in 2017.

During the 2018 season, Richardson’s Lady Flames won a program-record 49 games (49-14), taking a 19-game winning streak into the NCAA Columbia Regional Final. She led the team to its first-ever NCAA Regional Final appearance, being named Big South and VaSID State Coach of the Year.
