23 GPS PREMIER WOMEN 24 SEMI-FINAL REVIEW The Gallopers made their way to the decider with a strong 31-10 win over Bond University last Saturday. Flying winger Elli Mackay scored a double in the win, while it was the Jeeps’ forward pack who laid the platform for their backs to go to work, with dominance at set-piece time outmuscling the Bull Sharks. The minor premiers are the first of three GPS teams to take to the Suncorp Stadium turf on Sunday, meaning they should have plenty of crowd support on their side. After two Grand Final losses in the past three seasons, including one to the Tigers, there’s no shortage of motivation for the side this weekend.

THE INSIDE WORD ELLI MACKAY “Looking at this year as whole it’s definitely been an interesting year. We’ve definitely gone through a roller coaster of emotions, being in COVID times as well as some structural changes. “The feeling of getting to this point now, it’s extremely exciting. After last year, the team missing the win by one try, it’s extremely exciting to be back here again. “Having the weeks off was a bit of a shock to the system, but other than that we knew we had a job to do, and the goal didn’t change. “We’re completely hungry for it now. We know Easts are going to be extremely physical, we know how good they were last year and they’re the same this year if not better, but I have full confidence in our girls. “As much as there’s nerves and anxiety, we’re definitely more excited and tighter than ever before.”

KEY PERFORMER SARAH LEWIS GPS’ young scrumhalf Sarah Lewis was on fire last weekend in her first game back from an injury layoff. Lewis is one of a number of players who have been in the Gallopers squad since 2018, and has experienced their Grand Final losses in 2018 and 2020. The Hervey Bay product has trained with the wider Queensland Reds Super W squad over the last 12 months and her game continues to improve as she strives for rep honours.

25 EASTS PREMIER WOMEN 26 SEMI-FINAL REVIEW The reigning premiers didn’t have it all their own way in their semi-final clash against Sunnybank, but eventually they went on to claim a 24-15 win over the Dragons. Veteran Cobie-Jane Morgan scored a double, managing the game to perfection and unleashing some of the Tigers backline stars. Fullback Morgan Te Oka was forced from the field with a lower limb injury, meaning she’ll miss this weekend’s final. The Tigers front row of Tina Brown, Laina Cooper- Finau and Theresa Solai impressed, and they’ll need to be at their best against the GPS pack this weekend. THE INSIDE WORD CECILIA SMITH “It was a tough game, very physical, which is what we expected. The Sunnybank girls really gave it to us but we were lucky enough to come away with the win. “I wouldn’t say we’ve had the perfect season but our team has great culture. “We consider each other family, we play for each other and we learn off each other which is what has got us this far. “Having played there [Suncorp Stadium] before with the Reds, I’m excited for our Easts girls to get out there as well. “They’re going to enjoy the environment, it’s going to be huge for them.” KEY PERFORMER DESTINY BRILL It’s already been an incredible year for Destiny Brill. The youngster helped secure the State of Origin title for the Queensland rugby league team, while also featuring in a Super W Grand Final for the Reds. Another Premier Women’s title would be the cherry on top, and with Brill’s crisp service and sniping game, the Tigers are well-placed to go back-to- back this weekend.

THE INSIDE WORD CHARLIE SCOTT “Jeeps are obviously a top-quality team. ‘They’ve been a solid team all season and they’ll be taking plenty of confidence from the weekend into this game. “We’re playing for the club and something bigger than ourselves. It’ll be awesome to see plenty of supporters get down there on Sunday.”

KEY PERFORMERS WILL KIRK Will is the youngest of three Kirk Brothers at Easts, and is in his third and final year of colts Rugby. Kirk has already played plenty of Rugby in the senior ranks at Easts, across both second and third grade. His service game from the base of the ruck is quick and gets Easts on the front foot, while his running game also creates opportunities for the Tigers. Most importantly, Kirk is a competitor – watch his battle with Cullen Cooper-Jones.

31 GPS COLTS 1 32 SEMI-FINAL REVIEW A second half flurry saw GPS run out 30-14 winners over Brothers in last Sunday’s semi-final at Yoku Road. Lachlan Howse, Floyd Aubrey and Gus Rosanowski crossed for tries, while Cullin Cooper-Jones kicked three penalties in the 16-point victory. The Gallopers had a raucous home crowd on their side at Ashgrove last weekend, and their supporters will look to emulate that at Suncorp Stadium this Sunday.

THE INSIDE WORD BEN BYRNE “It’s been a really great year. “We had two new coaches in Torko (Lewis Torkington) and Sio (Sio Kite) and they’ve brought a lot to the team after two years of not so good performances. “The boys got together and really put something together that we’re really proud of. “The key for us is physicality. Offense can go anywhere, it can get scrappy, but we trust our defense to get results, forcing the odd knock-on and capitalising from that. “You’ve got your family watching you, your friends watching you, Suncorp - it’s the best place to be, it’ll be awesome.”
