Dear Graduate, I’ve been afforded numerous opportunities over the past 16 years as the chancellor of the University of Missouri–St. Louis to host dignitaries, celebrities, authors, scientists, educators and business leaders, and at the top of my fortunate experiences is an UMSL commencement ceremony. I have participated in over 150 commencement ceremonies and shaken the hands of nearly 50,000 graduates. That’s a lot of hands, a lot of success stories. Among the first graduates I met on stage following the fall 2003 semester was Evelyn Bailey Moore – a freshly minted engineer beginning her career at Boeing. I recall Evelyn specifically because she moved up the ranks quickly and received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. Today, she’s a chief engineer University of Missouri–St. Louis on one of Boeing’s top fighter lines. Like Evelyn, I know that each of you will find your place, your perfect path, and use your unique talents to live a life that’s fully empowered by the world-class education you received here. Know also 2019 Spring Commencement that UMSL is here for you, cheering you on. Always. Chancellor Thomas F. George

25 Pierre Laclede Honors College

Students of the Pierre Laclede Honors College pursue any major they choose and complete either a two-year or a four-year honors program. Each student shares in a challenging and innovative curriculum, which occupies one-third of their undergraduate career. The honors experience also requires independent study under the supervision of individual faculty. These projects include guided reading, supervised undergraduate research and/or academic- or career-related internships and public service projects. To this work, honors students bring their intelligence and a wide diversity of experience and values – among the college’s most precious assets. Completion of the program marks a significant achievement. These students are recognized during the ceremony and are wearing special red and gold honors cords around their necks.
