  • Architecture and the Arts in Catalonia During the Renaissance
CATALAN HISTORICAL REVIEW, 9: 45-70 (2016) Institut d’Estudis Catalans, Barcelona DOI: 10.2436/20.1000.01.121 · ISSN: 2013-407X http://revistes.iec.cat/chr/ Architecture and the arts in Catalonia during the Renaissance Joaquim Garriga* Universitat de Girona Received 20 March 2015 · Accepted 10 April 2015 Abstract This is an overview of the process of transformation of the architecture, sculpture and painting of Catalonia during the Renaissance. It attempts to reconstruct the fundamental era of changes when the late Gothic models were replaced by the new Renaissance paradigm gestated in Italy, thus ushering in the modern cycle of arts in the country. Despite the relative dearth of a Catalan historiographic tra- dition that studies and explains the cultural heritage from this period – which was decimated by the massive destruction in the 19th and 20th centuries, which particularly targeted religious works – we begin to trace the major outlines of the process of assimilating the Renaissance which got underway in the 16th century and did not culminate until well into the 17th century. What emerges is the no- table volume of artistic output undertaken, the main agents and factors in the transformation, the slow yet steady pace of the incorpo- ration of changes, the long phase of hybridisation and the uneven acceptance of Renaissance features depending on the different pa- rameters of architecture or figurative arts considered. Keywords: architecture, sculpture, Renaissance, Catalonia The artistic output of the 16th century in Catalonia re- Thus, instead of calling the works made in Catalonia fol- flects processes of structural change which, just like in so lowing the new model the “arts of the Renaissance”, per- many other national territories in Europe, took place and haps we should call them something more neutral and can be explained through the import of models originat- simpler, like “art from the Renaissance period”.1 ing in Italy.

  • Costa Barcelona English
Costa Barcelona English Costa Barcelona L’Alt Penedès, El Baix Llobregat, El Garraf, El Maresme, El Vallès Occidental and El Vallès Oriental are the six regions that make up the Costa Barcelona tourism brand, an area which is defined and guided by its relationship with the sea but in which the land, plains, gentle mountain ranges and Mediterranean vegetation also form an essential part of life. Sea and mountain, cities and culture www.barcelonaesmoltmes.cat A fairly densely populated area, with numerous large cities and major transport routes, which also benefits from large expanses of lush natural landscape, as well as vineyards and other crops, and preserves numerous examples of cultural and religious heritage that stand as a testament to its long and rich history. The proximity to Barcelona has undoubtedly exerted an influence over the six regions in the past, as it continues to do today. However, each has its own unique identity, way of life and of doing things, its places of business, of leisure, commercial hubs, long-established festivals and cuisine to delight the palate, replete with local recipes and regional produce. An area that, on top of its summertime draw for those seeking sun and sea, has more than enough attractions to warrant a visit, short or long, all year round: Modernisme, or Catalan Art Nouveau, is found in abundance, be it in former summer residences, residential or industrial buildings; wine tourism, particularly in the regions of L’Alt Penedès and El Maresme (DO Alella); El Garraf, a region that tells us about those who went to make their fortunes in the Americas, Los Indianos, as well as the artists who gathered there a little over a century ago; towns where you can opt to kick back and relax or look to improve your health thanks to the spa waters found there; museums covering a wide variety of subject areas and first-rate music festivals; fairs; markets; conferences; and more.

  • From Patinir's Workshop to the Monastery of Pedralbes. a Virgin
https://doi.org/10.5565/rev/locus.323 LOCVS AMŒNVS 16, 2018 19 - 57 From Patinir’s Workshop to the Monastery of Pedralbes. A Virgin and Child in a Landscape Rafael Cornudella Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona [email protected] Reception: 05/04/2018, Acceptance: 23/06/2018, Publication: 04/12/2018 Abstract Among the paintings of netherlandish origin imported into Catalonia during the first half of the 16th century, preserved at the Monastery of Pedralbes, there is a small panel featuring the Madonna and Child in a landscape which is attributed here to Patinir’s workshop, not excluding the possibility of some autograph intervention by the master. Whatever the case, this article sets out to situate the piece both in the context of its production and in that of its reception, that is, the community of nuns of Saint Claire of Pedralbes. What is interesting about this apparently modest work is the fact that it combines a set of ingredients typical of Patinir in a composition that is otherwise atypical as regards his known output as a whole, above all in terms of the relationship between the figure and the landscape, although also of its presumed iconographic simplicity. The final section of the article examines the piece in relation to the ever-controver- sial issue –which still remains to be definitively resolved– of the authorship of the figures in the works of Patinir. Keywords: Joachim Patinir; 16th Century Netherlandish Painting; landscape painting; The Virgin suckling the Child; The Rest during the Flight into Egypt; Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes Resum Del taller de Patinir al monestir de Pedralbes.

  • Petició Ciutadana Per a La Memòria Històrica I La Senyalització Dels Barris De Barraques De Barcelona

Barcelona (pop. 1.7 million), located on the coast of the Mediterranean, is one of the most progressive cities in Spain. Influenced by the rest of Western Europe, this city has much to offer. As a major port, Barcelona has always been a center of trade and commerce. Located on a plain above the Mediterranean in the region of Catalonia, Barcelona is full of beautiful parks and surrounded by wooded hills. The eastern coastline is a journey from the Pyrenees Mountains that separate Spain and France to the vineyards and orchards of Catalonia. Barcelona was founded in 230 BC. It has since gone Ranging from medieval gothic castles to the surreal mosaic buildings of Gaudí , the construction of this city through many rulers, including the th reflects its culture and history. The Catalonian Gothic sculpture of the 13 - 15th centuries began the notable Carthaginians, the Visigoths, and the artistic accomplishments of this region. The best way to get to know Barcelona is following the so called Muslims. Modernism Route . Strolling along the streets of Barcelona is like strolling through a living museum of architecture where the best halls hold its best works: the Catalan Modernist Style. Its stuccoes, mosaics, and latticed stain-glass windows enable us to reconstruct the years between the World Fair of 1888 and the first decade of the century, a period in which Modernism became an everyday art that helped Barcelona come of age and changed insignificant things into objects of art. The enthusiasm of the turn of the century – the desire for renovation – produced a social use of art, an anonymous popular architecture that dignified everything it touched.
