Spread of rats in some areas an additional health concern KUWAIT CITY, June 15: The spread of rats in some areas has become an additional health concern for the public, especially since the health authorities are busy dealing with the corona epidemic and monitoring the epidemiological situation, reports Al-Qabas daily. Citizens and expatriates noticed the spread of rats in their ar- eas, expressing concern about the exacerbation of the phenom- enon due to the current health situation. An offi cial source from the Ministry of Health confi rmed that the teams in charge of combating rats are working throughout the year based on an annual plan implemented in stages. He pointed out that the plan is not solely based on the reports of citizens and expatriates; as the teams visit all areas regularly, even the borders and farms, taking into consideration the construction of modern cities and the urban expansion. He affi rmed the teams are keen on combating various types of rats, including the Norwegian rats, which have spread in more than one area. He said controlling insects and rats is not the only solution, because the garbage bins and disposal sites for con- struction waste could be a shelter or breeding ground for rats. On the gravity of the spread of Norwegian rats, the source explained these rats are considered the vector of plague. He said the control method for these rats is different from the traditional methods, indicating a special type of poison is placed in the food but when the rats eat this food, they die only after six days. 37 governments,

Continued from Page 1 All that these governments achieved was making people dependent on everything. Therefore, the state lost about KD 140 billion, i.e. about $ 420 billion, for just subsidiz- ing goods and services in the last 20 years. So is there more harm to the pockets than this defi cit that threatens the future of the people? On the other hand, we have clear examples from some Gulf countries of how their governments are dedicated to supporting their citizens in the right ways both effectively and fi rmly. The latest of such an example is Bahrain, whose Council of Ministers announced on Monday a fi nancial stim- ulus package for companies affected by the COVID-19 pan- demic, including salaries and rents. This is the step in which Kuwait stumbled because of the altercations that cause all of us to lose in the absence of proper study, planning and fi rm- ness in implementation. Unfortunately, all of these experiences have not benefi ted Kuwait. Its governments are doing the opposite of what they should do... further stifl ing the private sector and restricting citizens, and at the same time not seeking reform. Putin meeting anticipated Biden eases trading ‘friction’ with the EU BRUSSELS, June 15, (AP): President Joe Biden on Tuesday moved to end a long-running dispute with the European Union over subsidies for aircraft manufacturers, a major breakthrough in the U.S.- EU trade relationship that comes on the eve of his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement that the two sides reached resolution in a 17-year dispute over how much of a government subsidy each can provide for its aircraft manufacturing giant - Boeing in the United States and Airbus in the EU.-came as Biden met with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. U.S. Trade Representative Biden Katherine Tai told reporters that the agreement calls for a five-year suspension of the aircraft tariffs, and stressed that it was time to put aside the fight and focus on China’s economic assertiveness. “Today’s announcement resolves a longstanding trade irritant in the U.S.-Europe relationship. Biden also has publicly aired intel- ligence that suggests - albeit with low to moderate confidence - that Moscow offered bounties to the Taliban to target U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan. Both Biden and Putin have described the U.S.- Russia relationship as being at an all-time low. Drift The Europeans are keen to set up a “high-level dialogue” on Russia with the United States to counter what they say is Moscow’s drift into deeper authoritarianism and anti-Western senti- ment. At the same time, the 27-nation bloc is deeply divided in its approach to Moscow. Russia is the EU’s biggest natural gas supplier, and plays a key role in international conflicts and key issues, includ- ing the Iran nuclear deal and conflicts in Syria and Libya. The hope is that Biden’s meeting with Putin might pay dividends, and no one in Brussels wants to undermine the show of international unity that has been on display at the G-7 and NATO summits, according to EU officials. In addition to scolding China, NATO leaders in their communique on Monday took a big swipe at Russia, deploring its aggressive mili- tary activities and snap wargames near the borders of NATO countries as well as the repeated violation of the 30-nations’ airspace by Russian planes. They said Russia has ramped up “hybrid” actions against NATO countries by attempting to interfere in elections, political and economic intimidation, disinformation campaigns and “malicious cyber activities.” “Until Russia demonstrates compliance with international law and its international obligations and responsibilities, there can be no return to ‘busi- ness as usual,’” the NATO leaders wrote. “We will continue to respond to the deteriorating security environment by enhancing our deterrence and defense posture.” Meanwhile, President Joe Biden arrived in Geneva on Tuesday for a much-watched meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, fresh from days of alliance-building sessions between the American leader and his European allies. Biden is making his first trip to Europe as presi- dent, and seeking to restore European partnerships shaken by former President Donald Trump. (AP) Australia and Britain reach free trade deal LONDON, June 15, (AP): Britain and Australia announced the broad outlines of a free trade deal Tuesday, eliminating tariffs on a wide range of goods as the U.K. seeks to expand links around the world following its exit from the European Union. The pact is expected to boost exports of traditional British products such as Scotch whisky, while boosting imports of lamb and wine from Australia. The U.K. also hopes the deal will help it join the trans-Pacific trade partnership, which would open the door to increased trade throughout the Asia- Pacific region. It is the first trade deal Britain has negotiated from scratch since it left the EU. Earlier deals with countries including Japan and Canada were built on existing agreements struck by the EU. Johnson and his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, appeared outside Downing Street on Tuesday in a jovial mood, underlining the benefits each county would receive in the deal and stressing the long ties between the two nations. “This is an ambitious free trade agreement,’’ Morrison told reporters. “This is not a standard cookie cutter agree- ment. This is an agreement with great ambition for both countries.’’ Britain is Australia’s fifth largest trading partner with two-way goods and services valued at 36.6 billion Australian dollars ($28.2 billion) a year. U.K. farm groups reacted with caution, saying they were waiting to see the details of the agreement. British meat producers have expressed concerns that they wouldn’t be able to compete with cheap imports from Australia. ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2021 BUSINESS 9

Death toll nears 600K COVID-19 highlights racial gaps in the US NEW YORK, June 15, (AP): Jerry Ramos spent his fi nal days in a California hospital, hooked to an oxygen machine with blood clots in his lungs from COVID-19, his 3-year-old daughter in his thoughts. “I have to be here to watch my princess grow up,” the Mexi- can American restaurant worker wrote on Facebook. “My heart feels broken into pieces.” Ramos didn’t live to see it. He died Feb. 15 at age 32, be- coming not just one of the nearly 600,000 Americans who have now perished in the coronavirus outbreak but another example of the outbreak’s strikingly uneven and ever-shifting toll on the nation’s racial and ethnic groups. The approaching 600,000 mark, as tracked by Johns Hop- kins University, is greater than the population of Baltimore or Milwaukee. It is about equal to the number of Americans who died of cancer in 2019. And as bad as that is, the true toll is believed to be sig- nifi cantly higher. On the way to the latest round-num- ber milestone, the virus has proved adept at exploiting inequalities in the US, according to an Associated Press data analysis. In the fi rst wave of fatalities, in April 2020, Black people were slammed, dy- ing at rates higher than those of other ethnic or racial groups as the virus ram- paged through the urban Northeast and Yancy heavily African American cities like Detroit and New Orleans. By winter, during the third perished in the outbreak but another example of the virus’s strikingly uneven and ever-shifting toll on the nation’s racial and ethnic groups. Coronavirus Now, even as the outbreak ebbs and more people get vac- cinated, a racial gap appears to be emerging again, with Black Americans dying at higher rates than other groups. Conditions S. Henderson’s powerful memoir A love story, medical mystery all in 1 book

By Molly Sprayregen

verything I Have Is Yours,’ Eleanor Hender- ‘Eson (Flatiron Books) A love story and medical mystery all in one, El- eanor Henderson’s memoir “Everything I Have Is Yours” chronicles her husband’s battle with an uni- dentifi able illness, as well as the toll it takes on their relationship and family. Henderson takes readers through almost a dec- ade of Aaron’s constantly evolving symptoms, from unexplainable lesions on his body to depression to hearing voices to Aaron’s absolute certainty that his body has been invaded by parasites. Together, the couple meet an endless stream of doctors and psychologists, who diagnose him with everything from schizophrenia to Bell’s palsy. Meanwhile, Aaron is not get- ting better, and the couple must also focus on raising their two children, as well as the other everyday challenges of marriage and family life. As they attend medical con- ferences, couple’s therapy, and more, Henderson invites Henderson readers to question the link between mental and physical illness, asking herself what criteria is needed to make an illness real. Interwoven with this journey, Eleanor also shares their love story, how they fell for each other at such young ages and remained ever-committed to building a life together. Henderson’s writing will pull at your every heart string. She is raw, emotional, vulnerable. The message: Follow the rules when the Olympics open in just over five weeks, or else expect a warning or a fine - or anything in between. “Respect the Playbook, respect the rules,” said Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi, speaking on a remote hook-up with Tokyo organizers. Dubi The Playbooks rolled out Tuesday were for athletes. But updates for others like media, broadcasters, spon- sors, and so forth will come within the next few days, and all the Playbook rules are quite similar. Officials say 15,400 athletes are expected for the Olympics and Paralympics. The Olympics open on July 23 followed by the Paralympic on Aug. 24. Including athletes, the total number expected for both events, factoring in media, broadcasters, Olympic Family, sponsors and others is about about 93,000.

All those entering Japan for the Olympics will be required to follow complex testing rules - before leaving home and after arriving. They must also agree to have their location moni- tored by GPS, download several apps, sign a pledge to follow the rules, maintain social distancing, stay off public transportation for the first 14 days and keep organizers informed of your whereabouts. “We expect everybody to follow the rules.
