Apps! Try some awesome apps that I personally find awesome, and helpful. (Mostly iPhone specified, however some are cross plat- form) Iconical: Have you ever wished that your iPhone was as customizable as an Android? Well, for $1.99 you can do things such as edit all of the icons, and set home screen shortcuts that will take you straight to someone’s Face- book page (I won’t judge you…. Too horribly), or to the upgrade screen of Plants Vs. Zombies. If you want a phone that is truly unique to you, then you can download it off from the appstore today. Dayre: If you don’t have Tumblr and you want something pretty dang close, and in my opinion a lot more pleasing to the eye, then you can pick this up from the appstore for free today. Dayre allows you to take pictures, sound clips, and even videos of your life and upload them to your own personalized blog style page which has its own URL ,so your friends can follow your ex- ploits. Plants Vs. Zombies: How could you make a list of apps without including this game? Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense game where you have to plant plants to protect your brains from the zombies. You, as the player, have a whole arsenal of greenery at your disposal ranging from peashooters to cherry-bombs! If you would like to get this, you can grab it from the appstore for $0.99. Pandora: Pandora radio is my favorite radio service on mobile devices. Pandora not only gives you music you love, it also helps you find more music that you will like based on the style, tempo, and group you are listening to. The only downside is that you must be connected to the internet to use it. However, that shouldn’t be much trouble considering most phones have 3/4g. You can start finding new music by downloading this for free from the appstore.

KANDI BURRUSS

Picture from : http://thatgrapejuice.net/2013/12/kandi-burruss- -deal-tlc/

Kandi Burruss was born on May 17, 1976 in College Park, Georgia. Kandi is an American actress, , song writer, , and television personality. She has a lot of songs out and some that I would love to share with you are: “Haven’t Loved Right”, ”Let Them Love”, “Don’t Think I’m Not”, “Stay Prayed”, “Cheating On Me”, “Leave You”, and “Fly Above”. Additionally, she’s been in a TV show that is called “Bravo” and the show she is currently in is called “ of .” Also noteworthy is her part in the movie, Second Chance Christmas. She is in a relationship with Todd Tucker who is also in “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” They got married on April 4, 2014 and are now living a good life in Atlanta, Georgia. Kandi’s Parents, Titus and Joyce Burruss Jr. have also appeared in their show, “The Real House- wives of Atlanta.” All in all, Kandi Burruss is a good person. by Davanta P a g e 7 E a g l e E y e

The Way to Play Video games are something everyone can find some sort of fun in, and so in this article I will recommend 3 of my favorite games to you.

1. World of Warcraft: World of Warcraft has been running since 2004, and is one of the most popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) games in the world and my personal favorite. WoW allows you to choose one of the two opposing factions: Alliance or Horde and make your character out of the eight playable races ranging from Goblins to Elves, even Gnomes! After you choose your race, you are able to choose one of the eleven playable classes available to that race, so you could be a melee fighting warrior, or a spell-casting mage. The point of WoW is to quest through the huge, beautiful world of Azeroth (and a planet in space called Outland), to level up your character, and eventually get to the high level content. But don’t worry, if you don’t feel like doing that, then you can spend your time doing Pokemon style pet battles, or collecting mounts, and with the new expansion Warlords of Draenor, now is a great time to start playing. Platforms: PC, Mac 2. Brütal Legend: So, any game that features Jack Black as the main character totally wins me over instantly. I bought this game because it was a dollar during a Steam sale, and my life has been changed! You play as Eddie Riggs a roadie (voiced by Jack Black) who was sent to the land of heavy metal to help fight off numerous big-bads. You meet many famous artists along your travels such as: Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford, Lemmy Kilmister, and Rob Halford. You battle evil with your Flying V guitar, and a battle axe in a world inspired by the album covers of metals past. If this game doesn’t interest you in even the slightest with its witty humor and absurd story-line, then we just can’t ever talk. Platforms: PC, OS X, Linux, X-Box 360, and PS3 3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Okay, so by this time in our lives you have seen or heard of the GTA series. There have been many controversies surrounding them, and they have a really amazing story line. GTA: SA in my opinion is the best game in the 16 title series. Here’s the synopsis from the Rockstar Games website: “His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.” This game was the first of many things for the series, holds a Metacritic score of 95, and was Playstation’s game of the year for 2004. I recommend you pick this up for the experience of story mode. It will change you with its humor yet gripping seriousness! Platforms: PC, X-Box, X-Box 360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, OS X, iOS (mobile versions aren’t as good), Windows phone, Android, and Fire OS.

by Kamron P a g e 8 E a g l e E y e What to Watch TV—something everyone can find joy in. Well, I’m going to be recommending 3 of my favorite TV shows.

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Joss Whedon once said, “ Make it dark, make it grim, but for the love of God tell a joke.” This statement sums up this show perfectly! Buffy the Vampire Slayer takes place in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California and centers on Buffy’s ex- ploits in fighting everything from vampires, to robots. The show also has great character development and an epic progressive story. It knows how to make you laugh and then make you cry. You can stream it from Netflix and Hulu or you can purchase it.

2. Doctor Who: Doctor Who started in 1963 and has been running ever since (excluding the stall period between old DW and the new DW). Doctor Who stars the time-traveling, regenerating Doctor on his escapades through space, time, and sometimes even alternate dimensions! He picks up different companions as the seasons go on, as well as his regener- ations to a different actor and personality. The show is quirky and gripping with complex character development. It also has great humor around every turn and is sometimes terrify- ing (the ninth episode of the reboot. “Are you my mummy?”). Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime all stream this straight to you without you having to purchase a thing!

3. The 100: The 100 is a newer show that is only in its second season, and the main story is that earth was destroyed in a brutal war between countries. As a result, everyone fled in- to space, and they soon realized they could not survive on their individual space stations. Therefore, each country connected their station together to form the Ark. What we see in the show starts a decent amount of time after that where all of the prisoners of the Ark are being launched back to earth to see if it is habitable or not. They then land and uncover many things about Earth that they never knew because they grew up in space. There are many main characters and an epic storyline to get you enthralled. It is based off of a series of books, and it can be found on Hulu.

By: Amy A.

Background

UVA student, Hannah Graham, disappeared on September 13 after a night out with friends. Sur- veillance videos show that at 1 a.m., Graham was walking and ran as she passed a Charlottesville gas sta- tion after leaving an off campus party. At 1:20 a.m., Hannah texted her friend to say that she was lost and trying to find her way to the party. She briefly talked to a man outside of a bar and walked into a mall downtown where witnesses saw a man putting his arm around her. Jesse Mathews, age 32, and the felon of this crime, was an operating room technician at the university’s hospital. He was also a former college football line man and a “sometimes” cab driver. He was arrested in Gilchrist, Texas and was charged with the kidnapping with intent to defile in Galveston County, Texas and is also facing charges related to a 2005 sexual assault. Furthermore, he has no intention of providing details. More than 1,000 volunteers had come out to search for Hannah, who was also 1 out 5 girls to go missing in Charlottesville in the last five years. On October 18, Hannah’s remains were finally found.

Hannah Graham, 18, remains had been found about twelve miles from the Charlottesville Cam- pus, in the deeply wooded area of Albemarle County. In addition, just six miles away the body of 20 year old, Virginia Tech student, Morgan Harrington was found there after she vanished in 2009. The tip gave police a lead was made by Bobby Pugh, a landscaper. He was headed to a job site when he discovered something frightening. Eighteen days later police were able to follow up on the lead after spending most of the time working with numerous local, state, and federal partners on the difficult case. After the re- mains were found, Hannah’s parents released speech showing their grief and thankfulness for volunteers and the presiding chief officer of the case, Chief Longo. When my mother died I was very young, And my father sold me while yet my tongue Could scarcely cry " 'weep! 'weep! 'weep! 'weep!" So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep. There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved, so I said, "Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare, You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair." And so he was quiet, & that very night, As Tom was a-sleeping he had such a sight! That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, & Jack, Were all of them locked up in coffins of black; And by came an Angel who had a bright key, And he opened the coffins & set them all free; Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing they run, And wash in a river and shine in the Sun. Then naked & white, all their bags left behind, They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind. And the Angel told Tom, if he'd be a good boy, He'd have God for his father & never want joy. And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark And got with our bags & our brushes to work. Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy & warm; So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm. Mr. Gray Mr. Gray became a teacher because he enjoys working with kids. When I asked him if he had any students that stood out, he responded with, “Everyone stands out in their own way, that’s what makes everyone different.” I questioned him on whether or not the students should be expecting anything exciting. In turn, he replied with, “Eventually the students will be able to see Bandit, the snake, eat.”

6th grader, Nicole Wynne and her family were awarded the Superstar Award for their volunteer work for the Virginia Citizen Corps. Way to go! Exclusive Interview with Mrs. Scarborough

By: Amy A. In the month of October I got the privilege to learn about Mrs. Scarborough, 8th Grade Civics teacher and who she is beyond our daily Civics teacher.

Most of your students know you are from Iowa, how was it like living there? Mrs. Scarborough: Iowa was a great place to grow-up. Everyone knew your name; there was only one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. We never locked our doors at night!

Why did you decide to move to Virginia and work at IMS? My parents divorced when I was in middle school, and I wanted to leave the small town for a larger area. I was recruited by Norfolk Public Schools to move. I taught in Norfolk for one year and [the] rest has been in Virginia Beach Public Schools.

How long have you been working at IMS? 6 years

Has each year been the same for you? No, the students change all of the time! I enjoy the new challenge of each new [year].

Any favorite hobbies? Paddle boarding, spinning, and teaching barre classes

Is there any advice you would like to give fellow 8th graders wanting to succeed in your class?

Get involved with community organizations, watch the news, and participate in class!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I have a twenty-two year old daughter that just graduated from William and Mary this past spring. She now lives and works in Washington D.C with the U.S. Federal Court System. Exclusive Interview with Mrs. Pettit

By: Amy Amoah

Most art students here at IMS know Mrs. Pettit as our awesome art teacher who educates us to become better art- ists with new techniques each year. Get to know her as more than just an art teacher by enjoying our interview below.

Can you briefly tell us where you were originally from and how it is like living there compared to Virginia Beach

(If you were not originally from Virginia Beach)

Mrs. Pettit: I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. I moved around a lot as a child. One year I attended 3 different high schools. I’ve lived here the longest that I’ve lived anywhere.

How long have you been teaching here at IMS?

This is my 22nd year. I’ve been teaching at VBCPS for 26 years.

Has each year always been the same for you?

No. Every year the students are so different from the year before. It has to do, I believe, with how fast students mature in so short a time in middle school.

When did you know art was something you would undertake because you realized you were so good?

When I was 2 or 3, I’d draw in my story books and on any other surface available.

Besides being an art teacher, are you an original artist as well?

Yes. I work mostly in mixed media as well as ink and colored pencil.

Can you briefly tell us some of the names or types of pieces you’ve done and what inspired you to make them?

One piece of work was “A Mermaid’s Tale”-- it took me a long time to complete. It was entirely made of stipple, done in pen and ink. I’ve always been fascinated by large bodies of water (lakes & oceans).

Is there any advice you would like to give fellow students wanting to take on art as part of their career?

Learn everything you can. You can educate yourself on technique easily, but you have to be motivated. Don’t be lazy and stick with one medium because you are comfortable with it!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I am grateful that I have been allowed to do what I truly love. Teaching art is something I had aspired to since I was a child. Twin Day

Mrs.Quimen co-sponsors the Smile Club with Ms. VanHorne. In Smile Club, they believe that a smile can change the world and they hope every- one shares a smile—every day. They raise money to donate to charities that help the environment. The club meets the first Thursday of every month—before school. Some of the events that Mrs. Quimen would like to share are: the iFest and Cashola Nights. Sometimes, they also do fund raisers during sporting events. For example, they had their 5th Annual Rush for Smiles Dodgeball Tournament in November and they raised $480.00. More recently, they had their Polar Plunge which raised $7935.00! One of the standout club/team members is the president, Madi- son Halinski. She is very organized, and she has great ideas so Smile Club can continue to grow. When Mrs. Quimen was asked how IMS could better support the Smile Club, she said, “We love to have students partici- pate in our fundraisers and activities.”

They also participate in many community activities such as: Parades, Senior Cen- ters, and Special Olympics. For example, they performed at the VA Beach Town Center Christmas Parade on November 22nd, the Special Olympics Polar Plunge on February 6th, and at Buffalo Wild Wings (Landstown Commons) Spirit Night on October 30th. An example of a team event they participated in would be the Bayside High School 50th Anniversary Homecoming Parade. During Christmas, the cheerleaders took part in their 3rd annual Christmas Caroling at the Bayside Health and Rehabilitation Center. The cheerleaders met Monday thru Thursday during football season; dur- ing basketball season, they practiced every other Friday. The school can support the cheerleaders by attending the many different spirit night events.

Mr. Stanley sponsors the IMS marching band. They perform in football games and parades, and they meet on Wednesdays after school. When asked if he had any stand-out students, Mr. Stanley stated that, “In our band, there are so many outstanding members. I cannot pick just a few. Everyone has their own talent and personality that makes this club incredible.” As for any upcoming events, they will be marching in the Pungo Parade in the near fu- ture. Mr. Stanley said that the school can sup- port the band “By cheering them on while they play their music. They spend countless hours practicing their music.” He also added that, “If you haven’t joined a club, you should because you can make a bunch of new friends.”

The Bus

Have you been on a school bus lately? The bus is a main source of transportation for IMS students. There are a lot of great factors people may not realize about why riding a bus is important. It saves gasoline, and it reduces co2 in the environment. In my opin- ion, riding the bus can be an adventure! One bus scenario is just like how one might im- agine middle school—people throwing paper balls, overcrowding, loud people, rude com- ments being heard, etc. Unfortunately, some people choose to act out these negative behaviors on their bus which can turn a bus ride into a negative experience. Wouldn’t it be nice though if bus riders could make riding the bus a positive experience for every- one? For example, bus riders can help by talking at an appropriate voice level. Who en- joys hearing people scream or overly loud statements or conversations? Also, bus riders can stop negative behaviors like chewing gum, talking back to the bus driver, standing up while the bus is moving, etc. I think a lot of students do not realize too just how hard a bus driver’s job really is. He or she is trying to keep students safe, and if they have to deal with negative behaviors and distractions like this, bus riders are putting not only their own safety in jeopardy, but others’ safety in jeopardy as well. We all want to get home safe and have a pleasant experience in the process, so do the right thing—respect your- self, others, your bus, and your bus driver!

IMS Computer Club wrapping gifts Many congratulations to IMS’ at IMS Book Fair at Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year—Mrs. Wyatt!!! Bullying by Narideen WHAT IS BULLYING? : Bullying is when someone is being mean, hitting, and even mak- ing fun of someone, and sometimes people even sometimes bully over the internet, that’s known as cyber bullying. People all around the world know what bullying is and are trying to stop it. WHY DO OTHERS BULLY? : Other people bully others because: 1. They want others to feel weak. 2. They want to take out their anger out on other people instead of the person (s) who has made them mad. 3. They may want other people to feel how they feel and to go through the pain of what they had to go through. 4. They think it’s funny. 5. They think they will be respected or considered to be “cool.” DON’T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING?: See above. It may be hard to believe, but some people bully because they don’t understand the meaning of bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING? : You can tell a teacher or tell the bully to stop or even while the bully is bullying the victim, you can take the victim with you. TAKE ACTION/GET HELP!! : When you see someone being bullied, AGAIN tell a teacher or an adult your trust or tell the bully to stop. If you see someone being bullied, you can take the victim with you. PEOPLE WHO ARE/WERE BEING BULLIED COME TOGETHER AND SPEAK OUT!!! : if you were being bullied or are currently being bullied come together with a friend and speak out. Maybe you can ask Mr. Manugo to go on the announcements and speak out against bullying.
