Source: "Hairenik" monthly (Boston) 7 May 1924, pp 84-86. Komitas wrote the autobiography in June 1908 at Holy Etchmiadzin, Armenia (translated by Hratch Tchilingirian from the original Armenian). I was born in 1869, on September 26th, in the city of Kutahia (Kotahia) in Asia Minor. They baptized me on the third day [after my birth] and named me Soghomon. My father, Gevork Soghomonian, was a native of Kutahia, and my mother, Takuhi Hovhanissian, was a native of Bursa. Both were Armenians. My parent's family was naturally gifted with [good] voice. My father and uncle, Harutiun Soghomonian, were well-known cantors in our city's St. Theotoros Church. The melodies and lyrics composed by my parents in the Turkish language -- a few of which I wrote down in 1893 in my native land -- are still sung by the older folk of our city with great admiration. My mother died in 1870, and my father in 1880. After my parents' passing, my paternal grandmother, Mariam, took great care of me, an orphan, and my education. In 1876 I stepped into a school building for the first time, a school in our city, which had four divisions. I graduated in 1880 and my father, four months before his death, sent me to the school in Bursa. Before I could complete the year, I returned to our city because of my father's death. In 1881, the prelate of our diocese, Fr. Gevork Tertzagian, were to go to Holy Etchmiadzin [the center of the Armenian Church] to be consecrated a bishop. Catholicos Gevork IV of All Armenians had ordered the prelate to bring with him an orphaned student to study in the Gevorkian Seminary, which the Catholicos had established.

  • Rise of Illiberal Civil Society W
Executive Summary This publication examines the growing influence of illiberal, anti-Western and socially conservative civil society groups, popular movements and political forces in five post-Soviet states: Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. It finds that illiberal social attitudes remain prevalent across the region, particularly in relation to LGBTI rights, and that they are increasingly being used as opportunities for political mobilisation within these societies. While there have been attempts to create illiberal civil society groups that mirror pro- Western/liberal NGOs or think-tanks, they remain significantly less influential than the institutions and groups linked to the dominant religious organisations in these countries such as the Orthodox Church, or political factions with influence over state resources. What is clear, however, particularly in Ukraine and Georgia, is that there has been a significant rise in far-right and nationalist street movements, alongside smaller but active homophobic gangs. These ‘uncivil rights movements’ still lack broad public support but their political energy and rate of growth is influencing the wider politics of the region. It is clear that illiberal civil society is on the rise in these five countries but it is growing in its own way rather than simply aping its liberal counterparts. Russia has an important role in the rise of illiberal civil society across the region, in particular the way it has disseminated and promoted the concept of ‘traditional values’; however it is important to recognise that while some groups have direct or indirect contact with Russia, many do not and that the primary drivers of such activity are to be found in the local societies of the countries at hand.

TURKEY’S POLICIES IN THE SOUTHERN CAUCASUS AND REGIONAL SECURITY MECHANISMS (TÜRKİYE’NİN GÜNEY KAFKASYA’DAKİ POLİTİAKLARI VE BÖLGESEL GÜVENLİK MEKANİZMALARI) Andrei ARESHEV Expert for the Center of Research into Central Asia, Caucasus, Urals and Volga Region, Institute of Oriental Studies under the Russian Academy of Sciences (IVRAN) Abstract: The disintegration of the USSR at first seemed to offer a vast area for the growth of Turkey’s influence not only in the Caucasia region, but also in Central Asia. Turkey enthusiastically welcomed the three newly independent countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. While Turkey was able to forge a wide ranging level of cooperation with Azerbaijan and Georgia, it has been unsuccessful with regards to Armenia. The author contends that establishing ties with Armenia in the same vein as with Azerbaijan and Georgia, and also the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will have far-reaching implications for the Caucasia region as a whole. Continuing tensions within Turkey and tensions in the wider region present both domestic and foreign policy challenges for the country, and provide impediments to its aim to become a reliable energy transit route for the whole region.

  • Under the Armenian Sky-For Development and Interchange of Experiences
Communications of BAO, Vol. 67, Issue 1, 2020, pp. 82-89 Under the Armenian sky-for development and interchange of experiences Ewelina Gradzka Pontifical University of John Paul II, Cracow, Poland 1. Introduction Under the Armenian sky was an educational project run in cooperation between two partners: Pol- ish Association Under the common sky and Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) in 2018/2019. Although, the project's name suggests it was related strictly to Armenia it was connected to a larger initiative run by the Association Under the common sky based on its leading idea, experience, method- ology and knowledge. The Association's fundamental aim is \popularization of the cutting-edge knowl- edge about the Universe as well as teaching skills using modern technology like Stellarium program and telescopes. It is also inspired by the Ancient Greek ideas of ar^ete, paideia and theoria which give a more humanistic component to the project. It is believed that in the excess of contemporary focus on STEM subjects it is important to remember about humans unique capacity to contemplate the reality that surrounds them. This enriches them as reasonable human beings who desire to know just for the sake of it. Surprisingly, such an attitude gives positive results and participants of the project appreciate this" (Gradzka, 2019). 2. History The two organizations had a first chance to meet on 11th March 2016 when Polish coordinator of projects and its main author Ewelina Gradzka came for a preparatory visit to Armenia in search for partners. Sona Farmanyan and Areg Mickaelian were the hosts and represented BAO.
