Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Nello and his grandfather lived in a small hut near Antwerp, Belgium. They sold milk for a living and were poor. One day, they found a dying dog by the road that had been beaten and thrown there by his master. They took the dog home and named him Patrasche. Nello loved art, and he loved the miller’s daughter, Alois. The miller did not like Nello, though, because Nello was poor. He did not let Alois see the boy again. Nello decided to enter an art contest that was to be judged by the artist Rubens. He hoped to win the contest and become famous so that he could marry Alois. But things went from bad to worse. First, his grandfather died. Then the miller accused him of stealing wheat from his mill. Because of that, Nello lost all of his customers, and he and Patrasche were kicked out of the hut. Then Patrasche found a wallet with a lot of money in it. It was the miller’s, and Nello returned it to the miller’s wife. When the miller heard about it, he wanted to find Nello and Patrasche and take them into his home. But Nello had gone into the forest with Patrasche after he found out that he did not win the contest. The next morning, a woodcutter found their frozen bodies in the snow. -

How the Sun Paints the Sky The generation of its colour and luminosity Bob Fosbury European Southern Observatory and University College London Introduction: the 19th century context — science and painting The appearance of a brilliantly clear night sky must surely have stimulated the curiosity of our earliest ancestors and provided them with the foundation upon which their descendants built the entire edifice of science. This is a conclusion that would be dramatically affirmed if any one of us were to look upwards in clear weather from a location that is not polluted by artificial light: an increasingly rare possibility now, but one that provides a welcome regeneration of the sense of wonder. What happened when our ancient ancestors gazed instead at the sky in daylight or twilight? It is difficult to gauge from written evidence as there was such variation in the language of description among different cultures (see “Sky in a bottle” by Peter Pesic. MIT Press, 2005. ISBN 0-262-16234-2). The blue colour of a cloudless sky was described in a remarkable variety of language, but the question of its cause most often remained in the realm of a superior being. Its nature did concern the Greek philosophers but they appeared to describe surfaces and objects in the language of texture rather than colour: they did not have a word for blue. It was only during the last millennium that thinkers really tried to get to grips with the problem, with Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe all applying themselves. It was not easy however, and no real progress was made until the mid-19th century when there was a focus of the greatest scientific minds of the time on the problem of both the colour and the what was then the novel property of polarisation of the light. -
