4 FILMOGRAPHIE SELECTIVE Réalisateur 1986 SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT (Nola Darling n’en fait qu’à sa tête)* 1988 SCHOOL DAZE * 1989 DO THE RIGHT THING * 1990 MO’ BETTER BLUES * 1991 JUNGLE FEVER * 1992 MALCOLM X * 1994 CROOKLYN * 1995 CLOCKERS * 1996 GIRL 6 GET ON THE BUS 1997 4 LITTLE GIRLS (documentaire) 1998 HE GOT GAME * 1999 SUMMER OF SAM * 2000 BAMBOOZLED (The Very Black Show) * THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY (documentaire) 2002 25 TH HOUR (la 25ème heure) JIM BROWN: ALL AMERICAN (documentaire) 2004 SHE HATE ME * 2005 ALL THE INVISIBLE CHILDREN (Segment JESUS CHILDREN OF AMERICA) 2006 INSIDE MAN (Inside Man, l’homme de l’intérieur) WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE : A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS (documentaire télévision) 2007 MIRACLE AT ST. BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORY NOTE: Mitchell Leisen, (born October 6, 1898, Menominee, Michigan, U.S. — died October 28, 1972, Los Angeles, California), American costume designer, art director, and film and television director. He entered the film industry in the 1920s, beginning in the art and costume departments. He directed his first film in 1933 with CRADLE SONG and became known for his keen sense of aesthetics in the glossy Hollywood melodramas and screwball comedies he turned out. His motion pictures — almost all of them made at Paramount — were often dominated by strong female leads such as Barbara Stanwyck, Paulette Goddard, Olivia de Havilland, Claudette Colbert, and Carole Lombard, who rarely were paired with a male actor of equal stature or presence. His best-known films include the Alberto Casella adaptation DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY (1934) and MURDER AT THE VANITIES (1934), a musical mystery story with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra, as well as MIDNIGHT (1939) and HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941), both scripted by Billy Wilder.

  • April 2012 the Pennsylvania Gazette
40 MARCH | APRIL 2012 THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE Persistence paid off for the songwriting duo of Ray Evans W’36 and Jay Livingston C’37, whose compositions include multiple Oscar winners, a much-loved Christmas song, and the themes from Bonanza and Mr. Ed. Their creative and personal journey—and the lost world of popular music pre-rock-and-roll—is documented in fascinating detail in a collection of materials recently donated to Penn. BY BEN YAGODA was the spring of 1939, and Ray Evans It W’36 and his fellow Penn alumnus Jay Livingston C’37 had gotten pretty much nowhere in their careers as songwriters. (Evans wrote the words and Livingston, who had recently changed his name from Jacob Levison, the music.) They’d started their partnership at Penn, as fellow members of Beta Sigma Rho and as musicians in a shipboard dance band that hit the high seas during vacations: one summer to South America, another to Russia and Scandinavia. They moved to New York after graduation and waited for success to knock on their door. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CANDACE DICARLO THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE MARCH | APRIL 2012 41 And waited. By 1939, there had been just—barely—enough Broadway. The elder Abbott replied to her that normally he intermittent positive reinforcement to keep them going. The didn’t get involved in these matters, but, “My son George year before, one of their songs, the cleverly titled “Monday Abbott of New York was a Salamanca boy; and, I make an Mourning on Saturday Night,” had been recorded by a singer exception by enclosing herewith the introduction you request.” named Virginia Merrill.

  • Fundamentación Filosófica De Las Conversaciones Cavellianas Sobre La Filmografía De Mitchell Leisen
SCIO. Abstract: Research on classic Hollywood films under Mitchell Leisen direction improves if we adopt some keys developed by Harvard philoso- pher Stanley Cavell. Among the contributions of this philosopher, there a Facultad de Derecho, Facultad de Filosofía, Antropología y Trabajo Social, Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir”. Correspondencia: Universidad Católica de Valencia “San Vicente Mártir”. Calle Quevedo, 2. 46001, Valencia, España. E-mail: [email protected] 56 José Alfredo Peris Cancio are some to highlight: his understanding of films as philosophical texts, the need for a methodology that fits reality, careful record of details of those movies that are not captured with a single viewing.
