Lady Bird Lake, formerly Town lake, is a popular outdoor recreational area for the city of . It was created in 1960 alongside the construction of . It is owned and operated by the City of Austin and the Lower Authority.

Boardwalk Trail

The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail surrounding Lady Bird Lake is 10.1 miles (16.3 km) long and mostly flat. Before 6/7/2014 there was a 1.1-mile gap in the trail between the Austin American Statesman building and Lakeshore Park. Along this gap, users had to divert along Riverside Drive and the IH 35 access road. Currently there is a boardwalk along the lakefront that connects these two points (See map for details).

The Investment Study for the boardwalk trail project was provided by the Trail Foundation, with private funding and the City Council appropriated funds for preliminary design, engineering and public involvement. The project is open to the public starting June 7th, 2014.
