Oral Tradition (http://journal.oraltradition.org) seeks to provide a comparative and interdisciplinary focus for studies in oral tradition and related fields by publishing research and scholarship on the creation, transmission, and interpretation of all forms of oral traditional expression. In addition to essays treating certifiably oral traditions, OT presents investigations of the relationships between oral and written traditions, as well as brief accounts of important fieldwork, and occasional transcriptions and translations of oral texts. In addition, issues will include the annual Albert Lord and Milman Parry Lecture on Oral Tradition. Submissions should follow the list-of-reference format (http:// journal.oraltradition.org/files/misc/oral_tradition_formatting_guide.pdf) and may be sent via e-mail ([email protected]); all quotations of primary materials must be made in the original language(s) with following English translations. If appropriate, please describe any supporting materials that could be used to illustrate the article, such as photographs, audio recordings, or video recordings. Oral Tradition publishes such materials online in an eCompanion designed to supplement the texts of articles. Most contributions will be reviewed by at least one specialist reader and one generalist reader before a final decision is reached. Oral Tradition appears twice per year, in March and October. Editor’s Column With this issue Oral Tradition offers a miscellany of essays that explore Homerica, Sanskrit epic, parallelism in improvisatory versification, and some of the social consequences of colonial ethnography manifest in man’s inhumanity to man. Composed in sabbatical mode along the banks of the Ganges river, Rishikesh, Uttarkhand, India, this note’s brevity is its sole virtue, unlike the multiple merits of the essays it introduces. In 2013, Gregory Nagy delivered the the 27th Lord and Parry Lecture, “Diachronic Homer and a Cretan Odyssey,” delighting his audience with a magisterial lesson that adumbrated the Homeric tradition’s awareness of its chronological evolution, especially in the mirror of the “lying tales” of Odysseus, that reveal the existence of a “Cretan Odyssey.” Next up, Jonathan Burgess offers a revised and expanded version of the 29th Lord and Parry Lecture, “The Tale of Meleager in the Iliad,” that explores the Meleager tale of Book 9 in the Iliad pointing up the significance of its narratological construction in traditionality and the epic’s characteristic capacity for accommodating narratives drawn from other sources. Working in the Sanskrit branch of Indo- European epic, Emily West proposes a set of diagnostic tools for assessing the degree of relatedness between parallel narratives that are developed through comparative analysis of salient variants in the “Tale of Cyavana” and identifies principles of narrative evolution. We now shift to a study of contemporary poetic traditions. From interviews with practitioners of Finnish “freestyle” rap, Mallorcan singers of gloses, and Cretan mandinadhes, Venla Sykari characterizes certain principles of end rhyme verse improvisation in her essay “Beginning from the End: Strategies of Composition in Lyrical Improvisation with End Rhyme.” In their reflections on poetic techniques of improvisatory compositions, the performers of these poetic forms identify the end point of a structural unit of composition as the apposite location for “strong” arguments. The author underscores how this constitutes a “reversal” of patterns of semantic parallelism. Finally, with the essay, “‘Hear the Tale of the Famine Year’: Famine Policy, Oral Traditions, and the Recalcitrant Voice of the Colonized in Nineteenth-Century India,” Gloria Goodwin Raheja analyzes eleven Hindi and Punjabi famine songs recorded in British colonial administration documents. She contrasts the illusory vox populi consent to British famine policy articulated in some apparently “compliant” songs with other dissenting voices in songs of censure and lamentation that the same authorities intentionally misrepresented to reinforce the illusion of popular approval of British famine relief policies. This issue of Oral Tradition appears in virtual space thanks to the combined efforts of the staff of the Center for Studies in Oral Tradition—Mark Jarvis, Hannah Lenon, Lauren Anderson, Elise Broaddus, Katy Chenoweth, Chris Dobbs (to whom we wish every success in his new endeavors), Emily Horn, and Associate Editor Professor Sean Gurd. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century.     Oral Tradition, 11/2 (1996): 190-221 Who Heard the Rhymes, and How: Shakespeare’s Dramaturgical Signals Burton Raffel The Audience “The many-headed multitude” was how, in 1601, a contemporary referred to the Shakespearian audience (Salgado 1975:22). “Amazed I stood,” wondered an anonymous versifier in 1609, “to see a crowd/ Of civil throats stretched out so lowd;/ (As at a new play) all the rooms/ Did swarm with gentles mix’d with grooms.”1 This wide-ranging appeal considerably antedated Shakespeare’s plays: though he very significantly shaped its later course, he profited from rather than created the solidly popular status of the Elizabethan and, above all, the London stage, for “London was where the players could perform in their own custom-built playhouses, week after week and year after year. In London there were regular venues, regular audiences, regular incomes.”2 The first playhouses had been built in 1576; at least two professional “playhouses were flourishing in 1577.”3 (Shakespeare was then a country lad of thirteen.) The urgency of clerical denunciations, then as now, provides particularly revealing evidence of the theater’s already well- established place in many Londoners’ hearts.4 1 Idem:29. Historically, this becomes a major issue of discussion among the scholars in the context of exploitation versus progressive mission in British India. Here, in this paper an attempt has been made to analyze and to interpret the prototype, methods, magnitudes, and far- reaching effects of the three major (Zamindari, Raiytwari and Mahalwari) land revenue settlements in a comparative way. And eventually this paper has tried to show the cause-effects relationship of different modes of revenue assessments, which in turn, how it facilitated Englishmen to provide huge economic vertebrae to the Imperial Home Country, and how it succors in altering Indian traditional society and economic set up. Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik wrote an open letter to Indians called ‘Five Questions and an Appeal’ where he lamented about being targeted and labeled a ‘terror preacher’ in India. In the letter, Naik said, “Of 150 countries where I’m respected and my talks are welcomed, I’m being called a terrorist influencer in my own country. What an irony. Why now, when I’ve been doing the same thing for over 25 years?”. Naik, 51, is an Islamic preacher, who founded the Islamic Research Foundation in 1991 when he started Dawah or religious preaching. His lectures mostly revolve around how Islam is superior to all other faiths. While he claims to be an advocate of interfaith dialogue, his preaching’s’ reinforce all the stereotypes which exist against Muslims. Following reports that one of the militants of Dhaka terror attack was inspired by Naik’s misinterpretations of Islam, there are growing demand for strict action against him. In the letter, Naik asks why he has become the enemy number one for the State and Central government. “It has been over two months since the ghastly terror attack in Dhaka, and over one month since I’ve been asking myself what exactly have I done to become the enemy number one of the media as well as the State and Central Gov- ernment,” wrote Naik. × and justice. They can also put the act of cultural production into the hands of participants, redefine the notion of great literature, and provide a counterpoint to institutional learning. These groups are potential spaces for learning how to relate to one another with respect while acknowledging our own privileges, which can ultimately transform hegemonic social relations that exclude and oppress rather than connect and build support. Using iii critical arts-based inquiry and program evaluation methods, I employ a reflexive technique to investigate the benefits of a single group for youth, Toronto Street Writers (TSW), which I facilitated for six years in the neighbourhood where I grew up. TSW is positioned within a range of literacy and community writing groups across North America, transgressive and anti- oppressive theories around creative writing pedagogy are summarized, and interviews with former participants and staff of TSW are analyzed for insights into how to facilitate sustainable community-based creative writing groups that genuinely benefit members.

    ARTICLE SOUND ARCHIVES AND MUSICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF MODERN INDIA: THE CASE OF THE FELIX VAN LAMSWEERDE COLLECTION (1963-2005) Rasika Ajotikar, British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow, SOAS University London Abstract This essay presents a critical social history of the context in which the Felix van Lamsweerde Collection came together. Felix van Lamsweerde (b. 1934), a Dutch col- lector, cultural anthropologist and impresario, extensively recorded Indian expressive cultures in the Netherlands and India between 1963 and 2005. This collection was digit- ised and catalogued between 2017 and 2020 at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv in Germany as part of a German Research Foundation (DFG) project. It includes a wide range of first-hand and commercial audio/video re- cordings of music, dance and theatre genres from across India along with accompany- ing notes, photographs, and a vast collection of books, magazines and journals. Van Lamsweerde’s journey into studying musics of India and the collection itself points to how India’s cultural politics evolved in the immediate decades following its independ- ence from the British in 1947. Whilst historicising the colonial, oriental and nationalist legacies of music collection in India, this essay examines the Van Lamsweerde Collection and archival projects at large through a source critical approach. It attempts to demon- strate the ways in which caste, class, gender and racialisation processes and the sound archive shaped one another in the formation of transnational cultural representations of India. Drawing on discussions in ethnomusicology, social theory and archival studies, this essay offers an interpretation of how musical knowledge and a homogenous con- struct of Indian culture has taken shape in Western European and American academe.

Ces définitions risquent de biaiser la compréhension du phénomène, puisque les chercheurs auront tendance à ne relever que les aspects qui vont dans le sens des définitions choisies au début de l’analyse qui, en plus, sont très réductrices et contextuelles. En adoptant une perspective évolutionnaire, il est possible d’ancrer l’analyse dans un cadre plus large, car basé sur des tendances motivationnelles universelles, pouvant servir comme un point de départ objectif à l’analyse. En ce sens les duels de rap peuvent être considérés comme des concours de compétences pour un statut conféré par le public (hypothèse de départ) où les participants tentent de surpasser leurs adversaires (hypothèse 1), tentent de conquérir le public (hypothèse 2), et reçoivent certains bénéfices en liens avec le statut grâce à leurs performances (hypothèse 3). Ces trois hypothèses évolutionnaires ont été confirmées par un examen systématique de cinq duels selon une grille d’analyse standardisée comportant 14 critères d’observations. Ces critères, regroupés en neuf prédictions, représentent les aspects variables et contextuels des duels de rap, tels que les niveaux et fréquences de dominance physique démontrés par chaque participant, d’interactions avec le public, de vers où ils se vantent et/ou rabaissent leur adversaire, de démonstrations des capacités artistiques, d’humour, et, pour le public, les niveaux d’acclamations des participants et les votes pour élire un vainqueur ou encore pour établir une hiérarchie entre les participants.
