The Legacy of Black Musicians: Entertainer Josephine Baker by Lilyana D’Amato In the decade following the First World War, French popular culture was dominated by images of negrophilia: the disconcerting obsession with and seizure of Black — specifically African — culture. Introduced to African folk art through global imperialism and colonialism, the French became fascinated with racialized depictions of the “savage” Black body, fetishizing Blackness through painting, sculpture, film, and performance. In the early 1920s, avant-garde Parisian artists began appropriating Black culture as a means of exploring what they saw as the juxtaposition between the “primitive” and changing notions of modernity. When entertainer Jospehine Baker, the hugely influential African American expatriate, arrived in Paris in 1925, she became the face of this racialized mania. Her body and persona came to signify the exotic, used to satisfy colonialist sexual fantasies. In reviews of Baker’s most iconic performance, her 1925 stage debut in La Revue Nègre, she is almost solely described through animalistic metaphors — as a monkey, a panther, a giraffe, or a snake. In the Parisian newspaper Candide, the reviewer begins: “This is no woman, no dancer. It’s something as exotic and elusive as music, an embodiment of all the sounds we know.” Dehumanized and reduced to something, Baker was, as Scholar Alicja Sowinska explores in her paper Dialectics of the Banana Skirt: The Ambiguities of Josephine Baker’s Self-Representation, “popularly situated in a sort of netherworld, suspended between civilization and savagery, and between the human and the animal.” References to Baker’s ambiguous humanity also appeared in e.e. -

LAWRENCE’S PALETTE OF WORDS: A STUDY OF LAWRENCE’S AESTHETIC DELIGHT IN BEAUTY AND UGLINESS Erin Elizabeth DeSimone, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Rebecca Boylan, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In this thesis I illuminate a new reading of D.H. Lawrence through close-readings of the Hegelian dialectic of beauty and ugliness in his four novels: Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). I argue that D.H. Lawrence’s opposition to his contemporary art theorists allows his writing to incorporate painterly images and painterly moments that teeter between beauty and ugliness. Lawrence’s deliberate aesthetic of oscillation explores the Vitalism of human relationships. My study of Lawrence’s aesthetic contributes to current studies of beauty and ugliness; thus I pair my work with 21st century aestheticians to prove Lawrence’s relevancy. The best method to study Lawrence’s aesthetic of intertwined beauty and ugliness is through the language of his novels. In each novel, Lawrence repeats the words ‘beauty’, ‘ugly’, ‘ecstasy’, ‘abstraction’, and ‘quiver’. These words become the verbal brushstrokes of Lawrence’s novels and they enable Lawrence to explore the Vitalism of human relationships through the language of aesthetics. -

Baker, who is a World War II hero in France, will be the rst Black woman to get the country’s highest honor. e ocial home of French President Emmanuel Macron conrms the ceremony will be on November 30 at the Panthéon. Scientist Marie Curie, thinker Voltaire, writer Victor Hugo and other respected French people are buried at the Panthéon. Aer Baker’s death in 1975, she was buried in Monaco, a city-state to the south of France. She was clothed in French military wear with the medals she got for her work in the French Resistance. e French Resistance was a group of French men and women who fought the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. Baker was born in the city of St. Louis in the U.S. state of Missouri. She moved to France in 1925 to ee racism and segregation in the United States. She became a well-known singer and performer. Baker became famous in France for her “banana skirt” dances. She performed to crowds at éâtre des Champs-Élysées and later at the Folies Bergère in Paris.
