The New Guys: Clinton’s crop of 14 new players includes two players ranked in Baseball America’s list of the Mariners’ top 30 prospects and a few just off the list. Shortstop Marcus Littlewood , Seattle’s second-round pick in the 2010 June draft is the #8 prospect on the list…he had yet to appear in a professional game entering 2011, but hit .538 with 10 doubles, 8 HR and 27 RBI during his senior season at Pine View High School (UT)…he’s the highest-drafted player ever to come from Utah. Third-baseman Ramon Morla is the #14 prospect in the system following a breakout 2010 in Pulaski…he led the Appy League in home runs with 17, adding a .323 average, 17 doubles and 49 RBI in just 62 games and was Pulaski’s Offensive Player of the Year. Outfielder Kevin Rivers went undrafted in ’09 out of Franklin Pierce University (NH), but was the Offensive Player of the Year for Everett in 2010, hitting .332 with 11 HR, 48 RBI and a Northwest League-best .466 on-base percentage. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez was Everett’s of the Year last year, leading the NWL in wins (8) and finishing third in ERA (2.59) in 15 starts. Fellow lefty Edlando Seco ranked second in the same circuit in ERA with a 2.48 ERA despite a 3-3 record in 14 starts. Infielder Stefen Romero was Seattle’s 12 th round pick out of Oregon State University in 2010 and will also be making his pro debut after missing last year with a right elbow injury. Romero was an All-Pac-10 First Team selection in 2010 with the Beavers…he hit .326 with a team-high 13 HR and 41 RBI in 48 games.

His only career and shutout happened that season – albeit a 5.0-inning CG – as he defeated the DSL Phillies with two hits over five scoreless frames.

Bearing Down: Although he allowed opponents to hit .371 to lead off innings with Pulaski last year, Mieses had a knack for keeping them on base. SUNDAY ’S STARTER: BRANDON MAURER (RHP)

20-year-old right-hander Brandon Maurer (4-8, 3.23 ERA in 27 career games) gets the start in the series finale against Burlington tomorrow afternoon. Seattle’s 23 rd round selection in 2008 out of Orange Lutheran (CA) High School will be making his first Midwest League start, third overall regular-season appearance with the LumberKings. After starting 2010 on the DL with elbow tendonitis, Maurer went 0-1 with a 1.64 ERA in four AZL outings and joined Clinton in August…he went 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in two regular-season games, 0-1, 10.80 in four playoff games. Maurer faced the Kansas City-affiliated Bees once last year during the regular-season and has only faced an Oakland affiliate once…that was in Game 2 of the MWL West Division Championship Series (9/12/10) as he tossed 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings against Kane County to help force a deciding Game 3.
