F1 People – Niki Lauda
F1 People – Niki Lauda This is the second episode of the second series of F1 People, a set of shows from Sidepodcast that chronicle the lives of the important people involved in the sport we love. Yesterday we looked at Colin Chapman, and today we’re going to focus on Niki Lauda. Andreas Nikolaus Lauda was born on 22nd February 1949 in Vienna, Austria. His family were not impressed with his desires to become a racing driver, but despite their disapproval, he took up the career. He started in the very low Formulas, and moved up the ranks to racing Porsche sports cars. Then his career hit a plateau, and to move onwards, Lauda took out a sizeable bank loan to buy an F2 drive with the then‐new March team. He drove for them for one year in 1971, was promoted to F1 in 1972, and drove in both formulas that year. Lauda’s skills were heralded by the March team, but they were not very successful at that time within F1. Lauda took out yet another bank loan to get into BRM the next year. Unfortunately, this was another team struggling, but when team mate Clay Regazzoni transferred to Ferrari, he spoke highly enough of Lauda that the red team signed him up as well. The Ferrari team were on their way back up in 1974, and Lauda fitted in perfectly by taking the second step on the podium on his debut race. His first victory was three races later. 1975 saw his first World Championship, and 1976 appeared to be heading the same way. -

The Long Beach race signals the green flag for Mouser as it launches into the 2012 IndyCar season. Mouser first set its sights on IndyCar sponsorship last year as an innovative way to communicate the company’s drive for high-performance and speed, and as a high-tech platform to showcase its valued supplier partnerships. Joining Mouser as co-sponsors are TTI, Inc, Murata, Molex, TE Connectivity, Phoenix Contact, Littelfuse, KEMET, Ohmite, Hammond, Harwin, Digi, ebm-papst, Omron, BIVAR, Fluke, and Amphenol. After a record- breaking 2011 debut, Mouser is eagerly racing into the new Indy season alongside its IndyCar partners and Kanaan in the driver’s seat. The infamous race spans 167 miles of adrenaline-filled track. Ever since its commencement in 1975, the track at Long Beach has seen decades of high-intensity, high-speed duels between some of the top names in IndyCar racing, such as the 1977 race where Mario Andretti avoided a first-lap, multi-car collision and went on to out-duel Formula One stars Jody Scheckter and Niki Lauda to become the first American to win a F/One race in a U.S. -

Mclaren Will Be Featured Marque for 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Barby MacGowan, Media Pro Int'l for General Racing, Ltd. , McLaren Will be Featured Marque for 2011 SONOMA, CALIF. (June 6, 2010) – At the conclusion of an epic first-annual Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival , organizer General Racing, Ltd . announced that McLaren will be the event’s featured marque for the event’s second edition in 2011. The legendary name has graced the halls of motorsports since its famed founder Bruce McLaren of New Zealand founded the McLaren racing team in 1963. “McLaren, like Ferrari and Porsche and other great names in motorsports, created the bloodlines that we worship today in historic automobile racing,” said General Racing’s President Steve Earle, who for four decades has devoted his life to organizing historic car racing events and is the originator of the Wine Country Classic that preceded the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival for 24 years. “Choosing McLaren as our marque means we will pay special tribute to the name, the teams, and the cars that McLaren has produced in the past and will produce in the future, adding another dimension of enjoyment for both competitors and spectators.” The 2010 Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival, held at Infineon Raceway June 5-6, hosted 375 historic race cars, some dating as far back as 1915, in a series of “time capsule” races over the weekend of June 5-6. “These beautiful machines on the track combined with the Sonoma wine country experience makes our historic car weekend unlike anything else on our schedule,” said Infineon Raceway President and General Manager Steve Page. -
Rush No Mistake About It, Director Ron Howardʼs “Rush” Is a Pulse
Rush No mistake about it, director Ron Howardʼs “Rush” is a pulse-pounding narrative about what is perhaps the greatest season in Formula One auto racing: the year-long showdown in 1976 between the Austrian champion Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and the British contender James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). It was a thrilling contest contended by two men who could hardly be more different and whose natures are well captured by Howard and company (now in cinemas,.). Both the earnest Lauda and the playboy Hunt come from wealth and want to break away from their familiesʼ traditions of business (Lauda) and well-heeled aristocracy (Hunt) to race fast cars. Otherwise, they have nothing in common. Laudaʼs attraction to vehicles is coolly technical and hands-on—heʼs drawn by the essence of their machinery. Even in his scary business, he doesnʼt want to take risks. Huntʼs attraction to racing is openly intuitive and adrenalin-laced—heʼs hooked on winning and heedless in his car. Lauda is appropriately contained, a bit shriveled; colleagues say he looks rat-like. Hunt is a prototype playboy, a long-haired Adonis with a yen for the ladies, the bottle, and the cusp of danger. The core of the film traces the dramatic 1976 season in which Lauda takes a commanding points lead, only to suffer a horrendous crash at the German Grand Prix then pull off an amazing physical recovery (which includes a horrific scene of Laudaʼs getting his lungs vacuumed!) to come back to compete in the chase. Hunt, in the meantime, gains steadily on Lauda in the points race, and the gripping finale comes down to the last test of the season, a rain-troubled race in the Grand Prix of Japan.
