The story of Bishop McDevitt matters. The people of McDevitt matter. Over the course of the last 60 years, Bishop McDevitt High School has shaped the lives of thousands of students, but it has also done something much more. Our school has helped shape the very history of this world. And it has done so by remaining true to its founding mission rooted in the story of the Christ. & ALUMNI HALL OF FAME The commitment made by the Church over 6 decades ago to bring Catholic education to the communities surrounding Wyncote, PA has resulted in multiple generations of men and women sent forth into the world to make real the Gospel message and prepare the way of the Lord. Catholic education matters. It matters because it fundamentally alters a person for the better.     Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.

In his typical, dignified way, Will told me that he comes to Face to Face for fellowship. Will has utilized most of our services for adults – meals, health care, social, legal services and art. Will’s answer reflected what I routinely tell people about Face to Face. Namely, that it is not so much WHAT we do, but the WAY we do it that draws people to Face to Face. Face to Face offers an array of complementary services, but with a unique approach. Each guest is welcomed with a smile and most are known by name. Staff, volunteers and guests all contribute to creating this warm and dignified atmosphere. We strive to care for the whole person. This year, the collaboration among programs is more efficient and effective. If a client comes to our social services office with a particular need, and in the course of the session it becomes apparent that there is an underlying legal or health issue, the client is referred to one of our other services. Volunteers in the Dining Room engage in conversations with guests and often help steer them to one or another service.

The clergy, on account of their high position, are better known than the laity, and information relating to the priests can be obtained elsewhere by those who wish, but there is danger of losing all record of the rank and file of the faithful unless they are remembered in a book like this. How much does the present generation know about the early congregation? W'^hen the ones that were acquainted with those early Catholics are, in the course of natural events, removed from this earth, it is to be hoped that in these pages will be found some memorials of those people who laid the foundation of the blessings we now enjoy. This book is not a complete history. It contains merely some of the raw material which may recall to the older parishioners other facts relating to the past.
