Magnús átti eitt stærsta einkabókasafn á Íslandi á 18. öld, og stærsti hluti safnsins var erlend rit. Efnislega spannaði safn Magnúsar svo að segja allt fræðasvið evrópsku upplýsingarinnar og margir af þeim höfundum sem þar birtust eru enn í dag ​ ​ viðfangsefni fræðimanna um allan heim. Þar má nefna: Adam Smith, Montesquieu, Voltaire, René Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Leibniz og Isaac Newton. Í álitsgerð Magnúsar má víða finna dæmi um skýr hugmyndafræðileg áhrif sem rekja má til bókasafns hans, en þar vísar hann oft í erlenda höfunda máli sínu til stuðnings. Einn helsti áhrifavaldur hans var þýski hagfræðingurinn J.H.G. von Justi, enda var hagfræði, eða hagræn hugsun, sérstaklega áberandi í hugmyndafræði Magnúsar. Í henni birtist sú framfaratrú að að hægt sé að knýja manninn til breytinga, en til þess verði hann að sjá hag sinn í því sjálfur. Til að maðurinn sjái hag sinn í að breyta samfélagi sínu til hins betra, verði að koma til nytsamleg menntun. Vísindin eru eitt af verkfærum hins menntaða og upplýsta manns sem notfærir sér svo öll möguleg tæki til að ná heildarmarkmiðinu, sem samkvæmt stefnuyfirlýsingu Magnúsar, er einfaldlega gleði og hamingja. 2 I. Afmörkun Í þessari ritgerð er ætlunin að skyggnast inn í hugmyndaheim Magnúsar Ketilssonar, reyna að sjá hvert hann sótti sér innblástur og hvaðan þeir straumar bárust. Meginheimildir ritgerðarinnar eru má segja tvær. Annars vegar er bókasafn Magnúsar, eins og það birtist í uppskrift á dánarbúi hans frá árinu 1803 og hins vegar er viðamikil álitsgerð sem hann sendi Landsnefndinni fyrri árið 1771. Hvorugt þessara handrita hefur komið fyrir sjónir almennings og þeim ekki verið gefinn mikill gaumur og því frábært tækifæri að greina þau nánar. Í uppskrift á dánarbúi Magnúsar Ketilssonar, sem varðveitt er á Landsbókasafni, voru meðal eftirlátinna eiga hans skrifaðar upp og virtar til fjár alls 538 bækur.1 Þegar þetta bókasafn er skoðað nánar kemur í ljós að erlendir titlar í safninu voru ríflega 60% þeirra, eða alls 335. Höfundar erlendu bókanna í safni Magnúsar spanna svo að segja allt fræðasvið evrópskra 18. aldar fræða. Hlutverk Landsnefndarinnar fyrri var að gera könnun á landshögum og fá álit landsmanna á íslensku samfélagi, bæði samfélagslegum þáttum en einnig á atvinnulífi og efnahag landsmanna.2 Landsnefndinni bárust alls 183 bréf og álitsgerðir frá landsmönnum, en viðamesta einstaka greinargerðin sem barst nefndinni var álitsgerð Magnúsar Ketilssonar.3 Í álitsgerð sinni svarar Magnús öllum þeim spurningum sem nefndin lagði fyrir landsmenn, en kemur auk þess fram með ýmiskonar umbótatillögur á allsherjar sviði samfélagsins.4 Álitsgerð hans er á löngum köflum í einskonar ritgerðarformi og vísaði hann óspart í heimildir máli sínu til stuðnings. Þar má sjá nöfn eins og Frederik Christian Lütken, Johann Heinrich Gottlob von Justi, Jean-François Marmontel, Ludvig Holberg, Montesquieu, Immanuel Kant og René Descartes. Í þessari ritgerð er ætlunin að gera könnun á erlendum ritum úr safni Magnúsar Ketilssonar sýslumanns og bera þá strauma sem þar birtast saman við 1 Lbs-Hrd. JS 603 4to. Þetta er auðvitað vandmeðfarið. Það hlýtur þó að vera verðmætt í umræðu um hugmyndastefnur eins og hér fer á eftir að geta fundið stefnunum stað í bókasafni viðfangsefnisins, dregið bók úr hillu, blásið af henni rykið og reynt að sjá hvort hún hafi verið lesin yfirleitt. 2. Dánarbúsuppskriftin Uppskriftin að dánarbúi Magnúsar Ketilssonar er varðveitt í litlu kveri á Landsbókasafni og hefur safnmarkið J.S. 603 4to og þar er bókasafnið á blaðsíðum 18-27. Listinn er þannig upp settur að bækur eru flokkaðar eftir stærð og svo taldar upp og virtar til fjár. Fyrst koma þannig bækur í folio, þá 4to, octavo og 12mo. Sjaldnast er vísað til bókatitla eða höfunda fullum fetum, heldur stytt og skammstafað. Fyrst kemur gjarnan hluti höfundarnafns og síðan tvö til þrjú skammstöfuð orð úr bókatitli eða efnisorð og loks er hver bók virt til fjár í sér dálki. Til að lýsa þeim aðferðum sem ég beitti við að greiða úr bókalistanum tek ég hér dæmi: 94. Schönn. Om Nord. Folk. Oprindelse 3 rd. Helstu hjálpartæki mín í ​ ​ þessu voru heimasíður Konunglega danska bókasafnsins www.rex.kb.dk og www.leitir.is landskerfi íslenskra bókasafna ásamt auðvitað leitarvélum Google. ​ ​ Skoðum aðeins dæmið hér að ofan. Ef ég slæ inn orðinu oprindelse í www.rex.kb.dk ​ ​ fást vel yfir 2.000 niðurstöður, þeim fækkaði svo niður 139 þegar ég takmarkaði leitina við bækur gefnar út fyrir árið 1803 (dánarár Magnúsar Ketilssonar). Ein af bókunum sem eftir stóðu var eftir Gerhard Schøning (1722-1780). Afhandling om de ​ norskes og endeel andre nørdiske folkes oprindelse: som indledning til den norske historie (Sorøe 1769). Bók með sama titli (en þó öllu lengri) má svo finna á ​ www.leitir.is en sú bók kom út í Kaupmannahöfn sama ár. Í þessu tilfelli er ég nokkuð viss í minni sök. Hér er ég kominn með samsvörun sem ég sætti mig fyllilega við, þetta er alveg ábyggilega sama bókin og í uppskriftinni, en þó er ómögulegt staðfesta hvaða útgáfu um ræðir. Hitt dæmið sem ég tek er öllu snúnara: 199. Nevtoni Philos. Nat. Tom. 2. Eftir ​ ​ nokkuð ráp á internetinu er ég þeirrar skoðunar að hér sé um að ræða grundvallarrit 5 Isaacs Newton, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica sem fyrst kom út árið ​ ​ 1687. Aftur er ómögulegt að segja til um hvaða útgáfu ræðir. Til dæmis eru niðurstöður í www.rex.kb.dk sem tengjast franska rithöfundinum Voltaire (1694-1778) ​ ​ og aðrar með nafni þýska heimspekingsins Leibniz (1646-1716), en það er hins ​ ​ vegar ekkert sérstakt sem gefur til kynna nákvæmlega hvaða útgáfa er hér á ferðinni. Af þessum 335 erlendu titlum hef ég komist nokkuð vel á snoðir um það bil 170 bækur. Margar aðrar hef ég getað flokkað eftir ætluðu efni þeirra út frá skammstöfuðum titli þeirra í handritinu. Hér er dæmi um slíkt: 9. Homeri Op. Græc. ​ Lat. rotinn. Rit af þessum toga færi ég í flokkinn fornfræði án þess að greina nánar ​ ​ ​ hvert það er, enda tengist þau ekki beinlínis aðal áherslum þessarar ritgerðar. Svo eru ýmsir aðrir bókatitlar sem erfitt hefur reynst að greina úr, en gaman hefði verið að varpa betra ljósi á. Þannig er um marga þá titla sem ég hef flokkað í flokkinn málvísindi. Þetta eru meðal annars allir óskilgreindir titlar sem innihalda ​ ​ skammstöfunina Lex, en þeir eru alls 15 talsins. Oft má þó vel sjá af samhenginu og ​ ​ skammstöfununum sjálfum hvers eðlis ritin eru, eða á hvaða tungumálum. Dæmi rit af þessum toga eru: 15. Calep: Lex: lat og Monets Lexic: Franc: lat:. Ef við bætum ​ ​ ​ ​ þeim ritum sem ég flokkað á þennan hátt saman við skilgreinda titla og höfunda standa aðeins eftir um það bil 20 erlendir titlar sem teljast með öllu óskilgreindir. 3. Álitsgerðin Álitsgerð Magnúsar Ketilssonar til Landsnefndarinnar fyrri er varðveitt í skjalasafni Rentukammers á Þjóðskjalasafni Íslands. Handritið er í 4to stærð og 184 tölusettar síður sem saumað er í pergamentkápu. Uppskrifuð er álitsgerðin alls 56.500 orð að lengd. Kverið er allt með rithönd Magnúsar Ketilssonar sem er jöfn og falleg, en letrið þó oft smátt.5 Álitsgerðin er í þremur hlutum. Fyrsti hlutinn, Sandferdig Efterretning om ​ Dahle Syssel, er á fyrstu 24 síðum handritsins. Þetta er greinargerð um hagi og gæði ​ Dalasýslu þar sem Magnús fjallar í átta liðum um ástand sýslunnar. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that these sources have been acknowledged in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation undertook to investigate the social and religious dynamic at play in processes of religious conversion within two cultures, the Sámi and the Scandinavian (Norse). More specifically, it examined some particular forces bearing upon this process, forces originating from within the cultures in question, working, it is argued, to dispute, disrupt and thereby counteract the pressures placed upon these indigenous communities by the missionary campaigns each was subjected to. The two spheres of dispute or ambivalence towards the abandonment of indigenous religion and the adoption of the religion of the colonial institution (the Church) which were examined were: economic activity perceived as unsustainable without the 'safety net' of having recourse to appeal to supernatural powers to intervene when the economic affairs of the community suffered crisis; and the inheritance of ancestral tradition. Within the indigenous religious tradition of the Sámi communities selected as comparanda for the purposes of the study, ancestral tradition was embodied, articulated and transmitted by particular supernatural entities, personal guardian spirits. Intervention in economic affairs fell within the remit of these spirits, along with others, which may be characterized as guardian spirits of localities, and guardian spirits of particular groups of game animals (such as wild reindeer, fish).

    Making Facts from Stones: Gerhard Schøning and the Anne Eriksen Cathedral of Trondheim In 1762, the historian and antiquary Gerhard Schøning published a large work on the Cathedral of Trondheim, Beskrivelse over Dom-Kirken i Trondheim (Description of the Cathedral of Trondheim). Originally the shrine of Norway’s patron saint and christening king, Saint Olav (d. 1033), the building had suffered severe damage and decay since the Reformation and Norway’s subordination to Denmark in 1537. As both a pilgrims’ destination and a monument to Norwegian independ- ence, it was an elementum non gratum in the Protestant Danish kingdom, of which Norway was now a part. In the eighteenth century, large parts of the medieval structure lay in ruins. Schøning’s explicit aim with his work was to show the ancient glory of the cathedral—and implicitly of the nation. He is lavish in his praise, and quotes earlier authors who claim that the building once was without equal in all Christendom.1 Nevertheless, he is also critical of these older texts, not least when they interpret the cathedral’s decay in religious terms rather than describing what could actually be seen. Schøning wants to set the record straight and provide more precise information. The thorough and meticulous work gained Schøning a still lasting scholarly reputation. Not only is the book used as a historical source, it is still reckoned a valuable scholarly work on the cathedral. Its scholarship is easily recognised and the text is accessible even to present-day readers. The method appears rational, the disposition is logical, the information seems exact and the interpretations are empirically well grounded.

E. Gunnerus contributed substantially to the study of natural science. Less known is his contribution to the study of contemporary Norwegian language. Even if restricted in scope his contribution to the study of Norwegian dialect words deserves attention. A collection of dialect words preserved in the University Library of Trondheim, the Gunnerus Library, was not published till 1980 – a piece of work inspired, as pointed to in the present contribution, both by physico-theological ideas and work in the same field by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Key words: J.E.Gunnerus, dialect words, physico-theology, G.W.Leibniz. We often hear about bishop J. E. Gunnerus as a natural scientist – a botanist and a zoologist in particular. To what extent, we may well ask, did Gunnerus contribute to the study of the vernacular Norwegian language? Or to put it differently: To what extent did the spoken language he heard around him matter as something worth Aspects of Johan Ernst Gunnerus' life and work. DKNVS Skrifter 2, 2011 investigating? The short answer to those questions is that he did contribute, even if not extensively, and, yes, he seems to have seen it worth while spending time on studying the language spoken in his bishopric. The important point to note is that he took an interest in language as such, an interest that should, I think, be seen both in the context of the general scholarly paradigm within which he worked as a natural scientist – and in the context of the modest contemporary work conducted in the field of language studies in Norway, contemporary with his own work, that is.

    Fra eneveldets scene mot representative forsamlinger: Trond Bjerkås visitasen som offentlig arena i Norge, ca. 1750–1850 På 1700-tallet var kommunikasjonen mellom øvrighet og befolkning i Norge sterkt asymmetrisk. Mulighetene eneveldets undersåtter hadde til å formidle synspunkter og påvirke myndighetene kan deles i to typer. Den ene var indivi- duell. Suplikkinstitusjonen ga enkeltindivider mulighet til å skrive bønneskriv til kongen.1 Til kategorien individuell kommunikasjon hører også muligheten for personlig audiens hos monarken. Den andre typen kommunikasjon var all- muesamlinger. Disse fant sted i lokalsamfunnet og var ansikt til ansikt-møter mellom allmuen som kollektiv og kongens representanter. Den typen faste all- muesamlinger som er mest studert i norsk sammenheng er bygdetinget, men det fantes andre. Gudstjenesten var uten sammenligning den arenaen hvor allmuen hyppigst møtte en av kongens tjenere, og kan dermed forstås som en allmuesam- ling. Men gudstjenestens sterkt ritualiserte preg gjorde den i mindre grad enn tinget til en interaksjonsarena.2 Innenfor det kirkelige systemet fantes likevel en annen institusjon som kunne fungere som en interaksjonsarena, nemlig vi- sitasen. Visitasen var det geistlige embetsverkets viktigste kontrollinstans med menig- hetene og prestene. Både biskopene og prostene skulle gjennomføre visitaser hvor de, ifølge Christian V’s Norske Lov, skulle ”forfare hvorledis Præsten prædiker, udlægger Børnelærdommen, uddeler Sacramenterne, og om de i alle Maade søm- melig staa deris Embede for og pryde det med et got Levnet.”3 Visitasene skulle sikre at den samme, rette lære ble forkynt i alle rikets kirker og innplantet i un- dersåttene. Sentralt i visitasjonsakten sto derfor overhøringen av ungdommen, og biskopen eller prosten skulle formane menigheten til å leve et moralsk liv etter den evangeliske lære.4 I eneveldets lovverk framstår bispe- og prostevisitasene altså som et utpreget kontrollinstrument.

    Chapter 5 He Came, He Saw, He Conquered?: The Expeditio litteraria ad Polum Arcticum In these northern regions, so rarely visited and so little explored, everything is of interest, and Father Hell studied everything. jérôme de lalande1 ∵ To commission a high-quality, internationally respected astronomical observa- tion and thus restore Denmark’s dwindling fame as a “nation of astronomy” was no doubt the chief ambition of Hell’s sponsors. In the very first letter from Foreign Minister Bernstorff to his Viennese envoy, the only explicit aim of the expedition is observation of the transit of Venus from Vardø.2 Although the expedition’s timeframe expanded significantly, with the departure from Vien- na finally set more than a year ahead of the astronomical event, there is no evi- dence in the ensuing diplomatic correspondence between Vienna and Copen- hagen to suggest that Denmark–Norway was preparing to support a wholescale encyclopedic expedition entailing years of exploration and voluminous publi- cations.3 Such plans, however, soon took form in Hell’s mind. Besides bending to God’s will, Hell must have been all too aware that to the Republic of Letters the region in question was still virtually a terra incognita. Gunnerus outlined a reform of the University of Copenhagen. The reform plan was commissioned by J.F. Struensee who at the time was the ruler of Denmark and Norway and was part of a wide reform movement aiming at a thorough modernization of the Danish states. The article summarizes parts of the university reform project and discusses them in the context of Enlightenment philosophical thinking on the nature of scientific knowledge. One by- product of the university reform proposal was a projected university in Norway. The reform proposals came to a standstill when Struensee was overthrown in 1772. Key words: J.E. Rolv Nøtvik Jakobsen Rolv Nøtvik Jakobsen Dr. theol., postdoc, NTNU Gunnerusbiblioteket Email: [email protected] Abstract The article demonstrates the connections between Gunnerus’ scientific writings from his time in Germany and his years as a bishop and a pioneer in natural history research in Norway. Several topics were vital to Gunnerus throughout this period, primarily the theological and apologetic value of natural science research, the relationship between the body and the soul, the freedom of individuals, the two outcomes after death and his interest in scientific societies and collecting. Some comparison with scientific trends in other countries shows that the problems that concerned Gunnerus were among the most popular in that period. A closer examination of his scientific contacts would permit a clearer definition of his profile. There is no reason to regard Pietism and the Enlightenment as being mutually exclusive. Based on this, and supported by Gunnerus’ own texts, it is possible to see how his edifying texts and the theological and other scientific articles are closely connected and shed light on each other. The seeds of some Fabaceae species are sufficiently large and cunspicuous to be noticed by the layman, in­ cluding those of Dioclea rej7£xfl, Entad.? f{igas and lvfucuna sloan-ei, \'\'mch drt' the only '1common" drift seed species in Norway. Such seeds have found a position in the folklore of all the ethnic groups living in Non-vay, espedaUy among the Norwe­ gian and Sami inhabitants, but also among the Finnish and Gypsy (Romany- and Rodi-speaking) minority groups. Norwegian vernacular names reflect their sup­ posed origin (e,g'f sj(1f18nner 'S€a beans') or uses (e.g., losningsstein 'looseningstone' and bustein 'cattle stone'). In Norwegian folk tradition, the seeds have been used mainly as an aid during childbirth and to cure various diseases in cattle. In Sami tradition the seeds seem to have been used only for humans, both during child­ birth and to cure various diseases, In all ethnic groups, the seeds were considered rare and precious objects, as revealed both by sonte of their vernacular numes and the strict traditions related to the way of handling and storage of such seeds.
