Let it not be said that doesn't take the destruction of the environment seriously. Here Gary Crossing discovers what a few famous people had to say on the matter...

1LIAM HOTHOUSE: "Come on boys don't be like that. I'm really sorry. I promise Iwon't use ahairspray with CFCs in it ever again."

2The GREEN HOUSEMARTIN effect: "No seriously don't laugh. The hole in the ozone layer really is getting bigger."

3PAUL WELLER: "Yabadabadoo!" True socialist Paul has decided that the only way to save the environment is by going back to nature. Here him putting the finishing touches to the nursery extension of his log cabin.

4THE WEDDING PRESENT: "We must have been here for hours. Are you sure that the Cruise missile convoy is using this route today?"

5KYLIE: Don't be taken in by the cute disguise. This girl is wanted in 10 countries for noise pollution of the highest order.

6THE BLOW MONKEYS: "Now listen here see, we don't wanna no car park on our lands." Dr Robert and the Blow Mafia stage a24 hour lie-in at the local playing fields.

HOLLYWOOD BABYLON

Since enjoying brief success with Hollywood Beyond two years ago, Mark Rogers has left his major record company, immersed himself in and resurfaced on indie label Warrior's Dance with anew record, Let's Get Together/I Promise'. Unlike other ex-pop stars who became infatuated with house and tried their hands at it, this doesn't sound like just mere emulation. "The first track did," Mark smiles, "so Iwaited until it felt right." There's not much to choose between the two songs, both oozing a kind of mellow melancholy. but 'Let's Get Together' is afamiliar call to unity. Just back from aholiday in New York ("I fell in love"), other experiences over the Atlantic have proved frustrating, in afunny sort of way. "I went to this club in LA where Iwas the only black person — there was ablack club with the same sort of people and same attitudes just round the corner — and because Ihad locks at the time and an English accent they thought Imust have been in Steel Pulse! R "A 2 7 Jet Vegas live a fast JET PROPELLER

It seems interviewing Jet Vegas entails experiencing a catalogue of personal firsts. The life, zipping to and fro' first first involves waking up at some ungodly hour of a bitter March morning to fly to

across the channel, up Paris, afirst that shall remain an only. On arrival at London's City Airport in the heart

of the deserted Docklands area — the second first — Imeet with rm photographer and down the Eiffel Normski and Jet Vegas' English half Michael Duignan. Together we sit, bemused at the

Tower and in and out plush surroundings of this tiny airport, joking about the prospect of flying in something

akin to the aircraft Amy Johnson used to circle the globe. But when boarding time of trendy Parisienne arrives and we approach the second generation Spitfire we are to call home for the

clubs. Tim Nicholson next hour, the laughter gets caught round the lumps in our throats and our knuckles

turn white in anticipation. (words) and Normski This third first is one Icould live my life without. I've seen propeller planes in the

I, for one, have every faith in the jet engine, Idon't need to see something whizzing round to know that we're not about to crash land." duo, for want of a better term, and they take their inspiration from the likes of Pet

Shop Boys, Soft Cell, Heaven 17, and Depeche Mode. Their current single, 'You Can't

Hold That Against Me', is a breezy, stylish splash of mid-Eighties modernism, produced

in no small way by the very large Arthur Baker.

'You Can't...' follows in the wake of their notable flops, the Soft Cell-ish 'Sex

Power And Fun' and the hilariously overblown 'L.O.N.D.O.N', both of which got a

bumpy ride, as Ralph explains. — Sex Power And Fun' got agreat reception from radio,

and lots of people were playing it, but MCA delayed its release. So, when they

discovered it wasn't released they stopped playing it. and by the time it was released
