More than 220,000 spectators will line the course for the iron-distance event. The foursome featured on our cover are among a small Sunshine Coast contingent lucky to get a start in the prestigious race. They are all friends who socialise and train together when schedules permit. And while they have all raced iron-distance events before, this will be the first time they have competed together. “The fact we are all taking our partners i think that is very special… for the eight of us to be all over there at the same time,” Monty said. “To be able to share a race like Roth together for me More than 220,000 spectators line the Challenge Roth route. Following in the footsteps of his coach and countryman, Luc Van Lierde, Frederik became the second Belgian IRONMAN World Champion in the event’s history. LUKE MCKENZIE Australia • 08:15:19 The six-time IRONMAN Champion made a bold statement that he would be a contender in Kona with an impressive win at IRONMAN Cairns earlier this year. McKenzie surged to the front of the race early in the marathon, only to be passed heading into the famed Natural Energy Lab by eventual champion, Frederik Van Lierde. His runner-up finish, though, was the performance of a lifetime for the 32-year-old who competed in his first triathlon in 1994. SEBASTIAN KIENLE Germany • 08:19:24 The two-time IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion finished fourth in 2012 and moved up one position on the podium at this year’s 35th anniversary event. Building on the German tradition of strong cyclists, Kienle continues to improve in the water and on the run, making him a likely contender in Kona for many years to come. 2 2013 GoPro IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Top Three Women MIRINDA CARFRAE Australia • 08:52:14 The 2010 IRONMAN World Champion proved her first win was no fluke with a record-setting performance that included the third fastest run split overall (2:50:39) and a new course record (8:52:14).

ALOHA AND WELCOME TO MAUI - THE MAGIC ISLE In 1996 mountain biking and triathlon met in a duel of the fittest on the island of Maui. The race consisted of a rough water swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. The mountain bikers brought their laid-back style and bold self-assurance. The triathletes brought their hard-core training and avid dedication. 2 TOP THREE MEN PETE JACOBS Australia • 08:18:37 At only 30 years old, Pete Jacobs already has four top-10 finishes at the IRON- MAN World Championship. His second-place finish in 2011 prepared him for this year’s race where he claimed his first IRONMAN World Championship title. Jacobs has been solid this season with four wins at IRONMAN qualifying races — includ- ing his third consecutive win at the brutally hot Cobra Energy Drink IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines—and second place at IRONMAN Lake Placid behind Andy Potts. He’s had the fastest run split the last two years, going 2:41:05 in 2010 (third-fast- est ever) and 2:42:29 last year. This year, he had the third fastest run split and an improved bike, which gave him the edge he needed to claim the title. ANDREAS RAELERT Germany • 08:23:40 In 2012 Andreas Raelert continued to show that he only knows the podium when it comes to the IRONMAN World Championship. He returned to Kona, where he took third place last year, and secured second-place at this year’s event. With his result, it became the second time (2010 and 2012) the German has finished in the number two spot. He also has two third-place finishes in Kona, coming in 2009 (IRONMAN World Championship debut) and in 2011. In 2012, Raelert raced the Frankfurter Sparkasse IRONMAN European Championship in Frankfurt, finishing fourth after a crash on the bike. His 2012 IRONMAN World Championship race had the added bonus of his brother, Michael, racing with him.
