A CULTURE OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND STANDARDS

As outlined in the School’s Behaviour Policy and Uniform Policy. Governors and Staff have a clear vision that requires all stake holders to expect high standards that impact positively on learning and outcomes for all pupils. We are grateful for your continued support and coopera- tion in maintaining high standards of uniform, punctuality and attendance. Failure to comply with these basic school rules can detract from teaching and learning and result in pupils miss- ing vital discussions in classrooms that are focused on examination preparation and crucial subject content. To further develop a culture of high expectations, mutual respect and to ensure there is a safe and stimulating environment, students and parents/carers are asked to make themselves famil- iar with the School’s Lunch and Break Time Charter: Pupils are required to be in full school uniform at all times and are reminded that all top coats

must be navy blue or black, and no informal footwear is permitted. Pupils wearing inappropri- ate or unacceptable items of clothing will be removed from lessons. If you require support in sourcing correct uniform please contact Mrs C Kynaston.

Please be reminded that mobile phones are prohibited and pupils are welcome to use the school phones should they need to contact home.

Clean Air Initiative

Stanwell School is fully committed to raising awareness of environmental issues and is continually seeking to reduce pollution levels in and around the school site. A signifi- cant contributor to the poor air quality around the school is due to vehicle movement before and after the school day, and we are increasingly concerned about the safety of our pupils and ask parents/carers to aid us in improving the situation. The safety of our pupils is of paramount importance and the congestion in the immediate vicinity of the school is a genuine concern. Parents are asked to adhere to the following guidance to improve the situation for pupils and local residents:

 Encourage children to walk (at least) some of the journey to and from school;

 avoid parking on the junctions, yellow lines and ‘drop-curbs’;

 do not leave cars idling and turn off the engine.

 wherever possible, arrange to pick up pupils at a venue further away from the school.

It is envisaged such measures would:

 reduce traffic congestion around the school

 reduce noise and pollution

 provide daily walking exercise  teach young children vital road safety skills

In addition, parents/carers are asked to ensure that if they collect children from Victo- ria Road they do so in a way that does not prevent the school buses from parking alongside the pavement.

Parents/carers are reminded that pupils are expected to be on school site by 8:30a.m. to ensure lessons begin promptly at 8:35a.m.

It is in all our interests to protect our pupils and I would ask for your co-operation and assistance in this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mr T Brown (Headteacher)

As part of our Primary Liaison project, we welcomed a number of Year 6 pupils from our feeder schools into the Geography department. Whilst they were visiting, the Year 6 pupils took part in a problem solving task on ‘Happy Holiday’ where they had to find the perfect family holiday (using a set of criteria) for the Jarman Family. Whilst at the factory, the pupils were given a talk on the location and manufacturing of products around the world. Also, the pupils had a tour around the factory, sampling some of the chocolate and concluding the visit with a ride on the 4D simulator.

The RE Club designed and made an entry for the annual Penarth Christmas Tree Festival at St. Augustine’s Church, organised by Angela Davison. Our theme this year was ‘Our Shining Stars’.

Students were invited to pick a heroic and in- spirational individual and explain their choice.

Dolly Parton, Nelson Mandela, Mo Salah and Frida Kahlo were just some of the shining stars.

Students were introduced to the key articles of faith, the key theological and philosophical be- liefs if Islam, and then asked thought-provoking follow up questions such as:  Do you think there should be a mosque built in Penarth?  What’s the hardest part about being a Mus- lim in the UK?  Is it easy to practice your faith in Wales?  Does the presence of evil and suffering in the world prove that God exists?

100 PER CENT ATTENDANCE: SEPTEMBER 2019 – DECEMBER 2020

The School’s annual attendance target figure for 2020 is 95%

Congratulations to the following pupils who have attended school every day since September. Research continues to show that pupils’ attainment grades are directly linked to their attendance rates and that explained/authorised absence is comparable in its effects on attainment with unexplained absence.
