Here is a preview breakdown of the men’s and women’s squads.

Men’s Preview The men’s Cleveland State swimming and diving team is coming off of a strong 2013-14 season, and ready to improve on those results this upcoming season. The men look to become at the top of the Horizon League after placing second last year. On the men’s side, the squad will be looking to improve on a 10-6 record that saw them win nine of their last 11 dual meets. The men will be anchored by an outstanding core group of seniors led by Nathan Grant, Jon Querciagrossa, and Kyle Riordan. Riordan led the team last season in the 500 free, 1000 free, and 1650 free. Nathan Grant was also a top swimmer where he led the team in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and the 200 fly events. He looks to continue his success in his final season with the Vikings. Jon Querciagrossa will look to improve his times this year and get on top of the leaderboard. Other key returners are juniors Adam Ingledew and Danny Roberts and sophomores Gage Alleman and Phillip Brittain. Ingledew is currently the 200 freestyle record holder and Roberts is one of the top in the conference in the events of the 3-me- ter and 1-meter diving. He was the conference champion in the 1-meter diving event last season. There are 8 incoming freshmen who will help contribute in 2013-14.Those fresh- man consist of Jacob Fausti, Kyle Fitzgerald, Andrew Krueger, Jonathan LaValle, Rys Robbins, Patrick Tippen, Kyle Wells, and Grant Wethington. Kyle Fitzgerald was a top six finisher in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events at hte Illinois High School State Championships. Rhys Robin and Kyle Wells made it to the semifinals of the State Div- ing Championships in Ohio.

Women’s Preview

The Cleveland State women’s swimming and diving team is coming off a 10-6 fin- ish in 2013-14 and ready to continue the program’s rise towards the top of the Horizon League in 2014-15. Similar to the men’s side of the pool, the Viking returners this season are a strong team with high expectations this season. The women will be anchored by seniors Erin Bender, Hayley Smith, and Liz Tamas. Hayley Smith is coming off a good season where she had top times in the 100 and 200 back. Tamas also had top times in the 200 and 400 IM. Junior Jodi Turk is another top returner for the Vikings who had a great sophomore year. Turk had top times in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle events. Sophomore standout Rowan Elbadry led the team in 100 and 200 freestyle. Other sophomores who will help the team to victory are Adriana Cannon, Anna Evans, Day- na Kiekebosch, Miranda Martinez, Ally McConnell, Meghan Miller, Madisen Tretter, and Tara Veramndere. Incoming freshman Larissa Czupik, Madeline Heffernan, Jamie VanDewerker, and Tobie Zeller will add to the already deep roster. Paul Graham, who spent the last 14 years as the head swimming and diving coach at Ashland Uni- versity, was named the head coach at Cleveland State on May 2.

“It is a great honor to be named the head coach at Cleveland State University,” Graham said after being named the head coach. “The swimming and diving program has achieved amazing success and I look forward to continuing that legacy with the help of the University, athletic administration, alumni and current athletes.

In his 14 years at Ashland, Graham led his teams to 13 top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championship and a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference titles. This past season, he led the men’s squad to an 18th place finish at the national championships, while his women placed 20th. He took 10 swimmers to nationals this year, totaling 13 All-America honors.

From 2009-12, the women’s squad finished no lower than seventh at nationals, including a fifth place showing in 2011, the best finish in program history.

The 2010 NCAA Women’s Coach of the Year, Graham has coached more than 100 All-America athletes, including his women’s 200 freestyle relay team that won national championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He also coached the women’s 100 backstroke national champion in 2012 and the national champion in the men’s 50 freestyle in 2007.

The GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2010, Graham’s teams have posted 32 out of 38 team records during his tenure at Ash- land.

Graham’s teams have also excelled outside of the pool with the women’s team sporting a 3.36 cumulative grade point average and the men having a 3.12 GPA. He has mentored five Academic All-Americans, including Sean McGraw who was one of two Ashland swimmers to earn an NCAA post-graduate scholarship under Graham’s direction. McGraw, who earned the honor in 2009-10, became the first AU student-athlete to receive the honor since 1991.

Two seasons ago, 23-time All-American Julie Widmann was named the Capital One Women’s At-Large Academic All-America of the Year.

Graham has also coached three student-athletes who earned GLIAC Commissioner Awards, as well as an Olympic Trial partici- pant and World Championship Trial quailifier.

Outside of the college swimming season, Graham developed the popular AU Swim School, which was a popular program tailored to teach the basics of swimming to youngsters.

Prior to arriving at Ashland, Graham was an assistant coach at Horizon League member Wright State from 1995-00, helping the Raiders to five conference championships. He directed the middle-distance and distance training group at WSU, while supervising and coordinating the university’s swimming lesson programs. He was also active in recruiting and developed and implemented training plans.

Graham, who is a member of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Sports Man- agement and Marketing from Marshall in 1988 where he also competed on the swim team. R i c h Ka r b a n

Di v i n g Co a c h // 12t h s e a s o n Since taking over CSU’s Head Diving Coach position in 2003, Rich Karban has had tremendous amounts of success. He is not only viewed as one of the top coaches in Cleveland State’s history, but also the entire Horizon League because of that success. Karban has earned Horizon League Diving Coach of the Year honors six times in 2011-12. For the seventh time in the last nine seasons under Karban, a Viking earned league Diver of the Meet honors when Kacey Cummings claimed the title in 2012-13. Josh Gonzalez was recognized in 2010; Dan Baiko took the top honor in both the one- and three-meter events in 2008; Chris Dalman won both the one- and three-meter titles in 2007 and the one-meter in 2006; Thatcher Carr won the three-meter in 2006, as well as both the one-meter and three-meter titles in 2005; and Chris Jones claimed the one-meter title and finished second in the three-meter in 2004. Dalman was also coached to an 18th place finish in the one-meter diving event and 20th place finish in the three-meter diving event at the 2007 NCAA Championships while under Karban. During the early 1980’s, Karban had a very successful diving career at Cleveland State. In 2000, he became just the second diver and the fourth member of the swimming and diving team to be voted into the Cleveland State Athletics Hall of Fame. Karban also became the first CSU diver and just the second swimming and diving team member to win an Eastern Intercollegiate Championship, claiming the three-meter title in 1984. During each of his four seasons on the team, he also helped the Vikings to a team title at the Penn-Ohio Championships. His career culminated in 1984 after being named the team’s most outstanding athlete and qualifying for zones. Karban spent three years with CSU from 1984-1987 before leaving to work with Olympic diving coach Ron O’Brien. He spent the first two seasons as an assistant and was the head diving coach for the Vikings for the 1986-87 season. Karban then coached the diving team at Eastern Michigan from 1989-94, earning the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honor in 1992. He also coached his U.S. Diving Junior Olympic Club to a fifth-place finish at the national championships in 1990. Karban and his wife, Betsy, were married in 1988 and have two children, Rich and Elyssa.
