  • Report to the Friends of Music
Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom.

Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris.

Scott Parry, Director Myra Huang, Vocal Coach & Pianist Kristen Kemp, Vocal Coach & Pianist Megan P. G. Kolpin, Props Coordinator DIRECTOR’S NOTE In each of our lives—during this last year especially—we may have discovered ourselves in moments of wanting, even needing some sort of human connection, but instead finding separation by any number of barriers. In the arias and scenes that follow, we witness characters in just this kind of moment; searching for meaningful contact yet being somehow barred from achieving it. Through circumstance, distance, convention, misunderstanding, pride, fear, ego, or what have you, we may find ourselves in situations similar to the characters in this program, while looking forward to the days when connection can be more easily achieved and separation the exception to the rule.

  • PRESS RELEASE for IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 15 June 2016
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 15 June 2016 HK Phil Season Finale with Ashkenazy and Behzod (1 & 2 July) Great pianists of two generations on stage for Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no. 3 [15 June 2016, Hong Kong] Vladimir Ashkenazy has long been considered one of the great pianists of our time, and his career as a conductor has left audiences no less enthralled. In July, he returns to close the season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) with Elgar’s noble first Symphony. This concert combines his musical mastery with the talents of phenomenal young pianist Behzod Abduraimov who returns to Hong Kong by popular demand, this time to perform Prokofiev’s dazzling and hugely exciting Piano Concerto no. 3. Prokofiev clearly had a particular affection for his Piano Concerto no. 3, as it was the only one of his five piano concertos which he recorded. The concerto was ecstatically received by American audiences at its premiere, and, has become a mainstay of the piano repertoire. Its dynamism, rhythmic intensity and technical bravura are unfailingly thrilling. Between Abduraimov, with his amazing technique and musicianship, and Ashkenazy with his understanding of the work as both pianist and conductor, Hong Kong audiences are in for a rare treat. In the second half of the concert, Ashkenazy will lead the orchestra in Elgar’s Symphony no. 1. Elgar’s music is characterised by the instruction ‘nobilmente’, and is indeed the definition of noble. He dedicated it to Hans Richter, the Austro-Hungarian conductor who directed the work’s triumphant premiere, and who declared it “the greatest symphony of modern times”.
