Derby Museum. 1 1) Introduction County Rare Plant Lists – or Red Data Lists – are a valuable tool to identify species of conservation concern at the local level. These are the plants we should be most concerned about protecting when they are still present, or looking out for if they seem to have declined or become extinct in the locality. All the species named in this Red Data List are native vascular plants in the area, and they either: have a national conservation status in the UK, or are rare in Derbyshire, or have exhibited a significant local decline in recent times, or have become locally extinct. The geographic area in the definition of Derbyshire used here includes: the modern administrative county of Derbyshire, the City of Derby the historic botanical recording area known as the “vice-county” of Derbyshire (VC57). -

In vitro collections represent a viable alternative for species that have phytogeographic and sozologic importance and that are difficult to conserve outdoors. Dianthus henteri Heuff. ex Griseb. & Schenk (fam. Caryophyllaceae) is a strictly endemic species for the Meridional branch of the Romanian Carpathians, being threatened nationwide. The in vitro culture was initiated from hydrogen peroxide-sterilized seeds. The disinfection rate was 93.75% and 75% of the seeds germinated 15 days after inoculation. Three media were tested for multiplication and three others for rhizogenesis, having different balances of NAA and BAP phytohormones. The best results for multiplication were on NAA 0.1 mg l-1 and BAP 1 mg l-1 (hormonal balance 1/10) medium, while the NAA 1 mg l-1 and BA 0.1 mg l-1 medium gave the best results for rhizogenesis (hormonal balance 10/1). 83 days of in vitro cultures generated 110 to 240 new-explants/inoculum that could further be acclimatized to ex vitro conditions. -

This issue of IRG is our 60th – quite a milestone for what was begun as a one year experimental project. Production of the magazine does keep the IRG Team busy but of course, none of this would be possible without the generous input of our authors and photographers: To all of you - a special greeting of warm appreciation from Margaret, ZZ, Ian, Glassford and Richard. “Don’t tell me - more last minute editorial changes” from Theresa McCracken in Oregon So far, winter in the Northern Hemisphere has been veering between cold and mild to a degree that will confuse most of our plants, while in the South a drought is expected which will lead to problems for growers there. These are, I suppose, problems which are visited upon us most years, in some way or another. Perhaps this struggle against nature’s vagaries is part of what drives us in our challenge to “conquer” the difficulties and the puzzles our gardens present to us? Or perhaps we are just all happily obsessed? BUCHAREST Maria Dincă 1, Lucian Dincă 1,*, Diana Vasile 1 1 National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry „ Marin Drăcea ” Braşov, Romania Abstract ”Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry from Bucharest has in its possession a Herbarium with a rich collection of plants (approximately 60.000 plates) and which is registered in Index Herbarium. The Alexandru Beldie Herbarium consists of private donated collections as well as collections obtained through exchanges of plates. For the present article, 66 plates from the Herbarium were studied, namely the ones belonging to the Androsace genre. The plates were then systemized on species (19 to be specific), harvest year, place of origin and after the specialist that has gathered them. The Androsace species were harvested from Romania, as well as other countries and are in a very good conservation state, even though some species were harvested starting with the year 1840. Most species were gathered in the interval 1940-1949. The Al Beldie Herbarium offers significant historical data which is a valuable research resource, together with rich data concerning the species, their origin place and developing conditions. Even more distinctive are the heaths of the Brecks which include chalk grassland and little or no heather. In East Anglia, the typical lowland acid grassland community is NVC U1, comprising sheep’s-fescue Festuca ovina, common bent Agrostis capillaris and sheep’s sorrel Rumex acetosella. Other species may include wavy hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa, heath bedstraw Galium saxatile and tormentil Potentilla erecta. 1., CURRENT STATUS National Status In England, only a sixth of the heathland present in 1800 now remains. The UK has about 95,000 ha of lowland heathland (58,000 ha of which are in England) representing about 20% of the international total of this habitat. As with other lowland semi-natural grassland types, acid grassland underwent substantial declines in the 20th century. Although there are no figures available on the current rate of loss, it is thought to be slowing. The decline is primarily the result of under-management, specifically under-grazing and abandonment.
