Waterfall News Waterfall retains World’s Best title The International Property Awards names Waterfall the Best International Mixed-use Development for the fourth consecutive year

uring an online virtual Grand Finale of the International Property Awards which took place earlier this month, Waterfall Management Company not only scooped the regional title of Best Mixed-use DDevelopment in Africa for the Waterfall development for the seventh year running, but was subsequently also crowned the winner of the Best International Mixed-use Development 2020/2021 for Waterfall.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Waterfall has beaten formidable competitors to the top spot of the world’s best mixed-use development. This year’s nominees included mixed-use developments from the UK, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Vietnam, Russia and Turkey. Entries were judged based on criteria ranging from design layout, architecture, services and security, to sustainability, innovation and marketing.

The International Property Awards, now in their 28th year, celebrate the very best projects and professionals in the industry across 60 residential and commercial categories. Awards are split into four sectors namely, Architecture, Development, Interior Design and Real Estate, across nine regions covering Africa, Asia Pacific, Arabia, Canada, Caribbean, Central & South America, Europe, UK and the USA. Over the past year, a panel of over 100 independent expert judges studied and assessed thousands of entries from 115 countries to finally arrive at the World’s Best winners.

Willie Vos, CEO of Waterfall Management Company, said: “Retaining the title of Best International Mixed-use Development in what can be considered a challenging period due to the global pandemic, is humbling. Each year sees our team and partners set even more ambitious goals for Waterfall where we all strive to take bold steps towards rolling out this innovative, world-class smart city to the benefit

6 Waterfall Issue 2 2021 of all who live, work and visit here. A fourth consecutive international win is certainly testament to our continued efforts in this regard, and we are honoured and proud.”

Waterfall Management Company is the Property and Asset Management Company of the Waterfall land and has been working with developers and investors since 2004 to create the largest mixed-use development in Africa. Built on the core values of locality, infrastructure, safety, sustainability, technology, amenities, vitality and social development, Waterfall has become synonymous with being the ideal place to work, stay and play in the heart of Gauteng.

Not even half complete yet, Waterfall still has over 1,6 million square metres of Gross Leasable Area (GLA) to be developed, ensuring future sustainable growth of this state-of-the-art smart city. By completion in 2027, it is estimated that the Waterfall development will combine 28 000 residential units housing approximately 80 000 people, with about 2,5 million square metres of GLA for commercial and office space, accommodating a further 95 000 people. The development also continues to play a key role in creating job opportunities along with contributing substantially, in terms of rates and taxes, to the City of Johannesburg’s finances.

“Congratulations on this achievement must be extended to everyone involved in the development of Waterfall, including my fantastic colleagues, all our role players, partners, shareholders and individual residential investors. a .z co . I am not only proud but also grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible team. Never waste a crisis By Melt Hamman, CEO of Attacq

he year 2020 will go down in history as a watershed moment for modern Thumankind. It will be remembered as a year of turmoil, uncertainty, and significant change – but also as a year of hope, resilience, and personal growth. A quote by South Africa’s Father of the Nation, Nelson Mandela, sums up the past year perfectly for me: “The spirit of Ubuntu – that profound African sense that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings – is not a parochial phenomenon, but has added globally to our common sense for a better world.”

With a COVID-19 vaccination set to roll out in the coming months, this is particularly pertinent. In this ‘brave new world’, we are offered the opportunity to either return to the old normal or to reimagine our world anew, choosing a reality shaped by a desire to be and do better.

As one of the major property developers of Waterfall, Attacq would strongly motivate for the latter – and through lessons we learnt during 2020 we will move

he phrase: ‘May you live in interesting times’ aptly fits our COVID-19 global situation. Whilst the Lessons pandemic has sadly meant suffering for many, this Tperiod of our history will be remembered for more than the virus. It will also be noted for the many changes from that society has undergone in a very short period of time. These changes will impact the way we live, work and learn. 2020 Modern education philosophers and thinkers have identified that the roots of our school system stem from the Industrial Revolution. Schools were established as By Mark Heidmann, Executive Head, Curro Waterfall a system intended for a different time and purpose. For decades, we recognised the need for change; listened to so many individuals provide the growing light of new The COVID-19 pandemic has been education practices; and millions watched YouTube clips of the likes of Sir Ken Robinson challenge the status quo. a catalyst for the move into our Changes were small and isolated, actioned by a limited future. Education is one such area number of teachers with a vision of something more enlightening – something more appropriate for the 21st that has been forced to adapt. century, something better suited to a world that moved fast and required agility rather than regurgitation. Last year created an environment that challenged the entire schooling system and forced the application of years of debate and theory. A new school age had dawned. Moving classes onto an online platform was merely the result of having to think differently and rethink what is important.

34 Waterfall Issue 2 2021 We had to change the way we thought before we could change the way we worked. Too often when thinking about schooling in 2020, we consider the classes moving online as our success. That was merely the result of successful thinking and being prepared for hard change. This new environment was ripe for those staff who had already challenged the aged status quo. Classroom support saw the rise of a new level of ‘manager’ – the often younger, tech-savvy teacher who welcomed adapting and teaching their more experienced colleagues a new delivery platform. This did not make the existing management structures obsolete, but it did challenge the usual drive and delivery focus to a far more staff-focused/pastoral one.

For the first time in our memory, we were all in the same situation, we all experienced the same baseline of stress, and good education leaders and managers, more than ever, had to start with the person first and then the expected delivery. Each member of the school community – teachers, learners, parents and guardians – had their own stress and challenges of the COVID-19 world with their extended family and community. The manager who we need now has to actively exercise a role dominated by emotional intelligence (EQ) – something that was always expected, but was too often overshadowed by the other daily operational pressures and actions. Gone were the classrooms, gone were

As much as we successfully power of education. recreated the classroom in homes via a digital platform, teachers also had to reflect on what they were doing and why. Reflection is a vital part of any personal and professional development and under the new lockdown teaching conditions, teachers found themselves inadvertently asking the ‘why’ questions as they reflected on practices that until then had generally remained unchallenged.

The few teachers who previously strove for a ‘new education thinking’ were now ahead of the curve as all teachers grappled with the ‘why’ of what they were trying to achieve under new, challenging conditions – gone were the classrooms, gone were the labs, but what remained was the raw power of education. The introspection has been invaluable and, despite the exhaustion of 2020, will be the driving force for modern and future learning and will form the foundation of modern schools.

Mark Heidmann is an international presenter and keynote speaker on modern education and 4IR. He is also the newly-appointed Executive Head at Curro Waterfall from January 2021.

We supply highly-effective window cleaning (inside and out) for domestic homes, offi ce blocks, showrooms, factories, apartment complexes and anywhere else where you have windows.

We make use of the water-fed pole system (trailer-mounted) to clean external windows using extendable poles and distilled water - a new method that is up to 70% quicker than traditional window washing methods! This allows us to provide a professional, competitively-priced service to you. Traditional methods are used on the inside of windows as required under strict health and safety procedures.

THE WATER The purifi ed water has a very high solvency level, and as such grabs the dirt. The brushes on the poles disturb the dirt which is then scooped by the water without the need for chemicals. The dirty water is then rinsed off the windows using additional purifi ed water. Because the purifi ed water has no residue, the windows can be left to dry naturally for a spotless fi nish. Furthermore, the water is PH neutral and does not attract new dirt as quickly as windows cleaned with chemical agents. Your windows therefore stay cleaner for longer. No chemicals or detergents are used in the water-fed pole window cleaning process, which is 100% environmentally friendly, providing you with the perfect “GREEN” window cleaning solution.

THE CALL US NOW! TELESCOPIC POLES These specially designed lightweight poles allow us to reach high windows 011 380 7500 (up to 5 storeys) without the need for ladders or scaffolding. This minimizes the risk of injury to our cleaners, and also reduces the risk of damage to your or email us on [email protected] property. A thin-bore tube transports the purifi ed water up the poles where it is sprayed through the nozzle at low pressure, so it can be controlled easily.
