Lack of studies on the styles of the sister families to Asteraceae, Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae, obscures our understanding of the origin and evolution of this reproductive feature in these groups. The aim of this work was to perform a comparative study of style morphology and to discuss the relevance of im- portant features in the evolution of Asteraceae and its sister families. Methods The histochemistry, venation and general morphology of the styles of members of Goodeniaceae, Calyceraceae and early branching lineages of Asteraceae were analysed and put in a phylogenetic framework to dis- cuss the relevance of style features in the evolution of these families. Key Results The location of lipophilic substances allowed differentiation of receptive from non-receptive style papillae, and the style venation in Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae proved to be distinctive. -

Relatively few cases of abnormalities in Gerbera jamesonii of greenhouse cultivation have received attention in the literature. The cases reported are scattered over a period and no detailed historical study has apparently been made nor listed collectively. Some extra efforts regarding enhancement of yield leads to some physiological disorders. Also, insect attack, edaphic and uncontrolled environmental factors may destroy the quality and vigour of plant exhibiting abnormalities. This Paper describes abnormalities observed in commercial floriculture plots during study period. Structural and Functional Leaf Traits of Two Gochnatia Species from Distinct Growth Forms in a Sclerophyll Forest Site in Southeastern Brazil

Aceito em 5/07/2012 RESUMO (Atributos foliares estruturais e funcionais de duas espécies de Gochnatia, de formas distintas de crescimento, em uma floresta esclerófila do sudeste do Brasil). O gênero Gochnatia é comumente encontrado em diferentes fitofisionomias do Cerrado do Estado de São Paulo, crescendo desde ambientes mais abertos até áreas florestais mais fechadas. Aqui foram comparadas a anatomia foliar e alguns parâmetros ecofisiológicos de duas espécies do gênero Gochnatia, uma arbustiva (Gochnatia barrosii Cabrera) e a outra arbórea (Gochnatia polymorpha (Less.) Cabrera), ambas ocorrendo em área de cerradão na Estação Ecológica de Assis, SP. Encontraram-se diferenças estruturais qualitativas entre as espécies, com G. barrosii apresentando folhas anfiestomáticas, com epiderme unisseriada e G. polymorpha apresentando folhas hipoestomáticas, com epiderme múltipla ou hipoderme, na face adaxial. Além disso, as folhas de G. barrosii apresentaram menores valores para a espessura dos tecidos (com exceção da epiderme na face abaxial) e da folha em relação a G. polymorpha. Foram observadas diferenças na assimilação de CO2 tanto em base de área quanto de massa seca foliar, além de diferenças na área foliar específica, sendo esta maior em G. barrosii. Apesar das folhas de G. barrosii possuírem estrutura bem menos escleromorfa do que as folhas de G. polymorpha, não foram encontradas diferenças na eficiência do uso de água. Os resultados sugerem que espécies de formas distintas de crescimento de um mesmo gênero possuem características foliares diferenciadas para lidar com as variações ambientais a que são submetidas. -

[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] RESUMEN Se presenta una actualización sistemática y de distribución geográfica de las especies y categorías infraespecíficas de la subfamilia Mutisioideae (tribus Mutisieae, Nassauvieae y Onoserideae) para Chile. El trabajo fue realizado sobre la base de bibliografía y la revisión de ejemplares principalmente de los herbarios SGO y CONC. Los resultados arrojan la presencia de 28 géneros, 192 especies y otros 22 taxones infraespecíficos en Chile. Siete de estos géneros, 77 especies y 12 taxones infraespecíficos tienen carácter de endémicos para el país. La revisión arroja dos adiciones y dos sustracciones a la flora de Chile. Adicionalmente, 47 de los taxones han sido corregidos en cuanto a su distribución geográfica por región en Chile. Se discute finalmente las implicancias que posee un adecuado conocimiento de la distribución geográfica de las especies para estudios de biogeografía y conservación de la flora nativa. Each of the major clades is well supported but the relationships among them are not always clear. Some of the new taxa are easily characterized by morphological data but others are not, chief among the latter being three subfamilies (Stifftioideae, Wunderlichioideae and Gochnatioideae) and the tribe Hyalideae. To under- stand evolution in the family it is critical to investigate potential morphological characters that can help to evaluate the basal lineages of the Asteraceae. The data for this study were taken from 52 species in 24 genera representing the basal groups in the family. Many characters were examined but most of the useful ones were from reproductive structures. Several apomorphies supported a few of the clades. For instance, members of subfamily Wunderlichioideae (Hyalideae and Wunderlichieae) share predominantly ten-ribbed achenes and members of Wunderlichioideae + Stifftioideae share two synapomorphies: 100–150 (200) pappus elements, arranged in (three) four or five series. These apomorphies can be viewed as an indication of a sister-group relationship between the two subfamilies as the placement of Stifftieae was not well resolved by the molecular data. -

II. Taxonomic treatment. — Ann. Bot. Fennici 51: 253–266. This is the second part of a revision of the genus Chaptalia (Asteraceae) in the Caribbean Islands, containing a taxonomic treatment. The number of recognized species in the genus is reduced from 31 to two endemics, C. angustata and C. dentata, and two non-en- demics, C. albicans and C. nutans. A morphological analysis led to synonymization of numerous names under C. dentata. A key to the species of Chaptalia in the Caribbean is provided together with species descriptions, illustrations, and distribution maps.
