SUMMER TOUR 2013…BAKER CITY OR BUST! June 21, 22, and 23

What’s Happening…

From the moment you arrive in Baker City and check-in at the IBCC table, you will have the By opportunity for many fun activities. Friday afternoon, June 21, will have options such as a Bill Dryden walking tour of historic downtown Baker City, a visit to the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, or the Baker County Museum. Friday evening is our welcome reception at our host motel.

Saturday morning, we drive to McEven to catch the Sumpter Valley Railroad. We will ride the train through the historic mining country to Sumpter Oregon. After a brief visit, we re-board the train for a return trip. Then we will begin our “driving car show” with a 100+ mile scenic trip including a drive over Dooley Mountain.

Saturday evening, we will have our traditional dinner event at the Best Western. Awards and special recognitions will highlight the evening. Sunday morning, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading home or visit some of those local attractions.

IBCC Summer Tour Registration Form & Information Flyer is available online at http:// idahobritishcars.org/Library/Doc/st2013reg.pdf

Wes Seideman, IBCC member and Capital City Kiwanis member; announced this event at the last coffee.

There will be two movies shown, both produced by an early lady pioneer movie -maker Nell Shipman. She lived in northern Idaho in the early 1920’s with her collection of wild animals. The first movie that will be shown will include her bear cub and her son. The second movie will be “Something New” which is a race be- tween a horse and a “new” 1921 Maxwell. Both are sponsored by the Capital City Kiwanis as a benefit program.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see and hear some history and enjoy a piece of life as it was before electronics. Our Egyptian Theatre is one of only a handful of theatres that still has its origi- nal pipe organ fully functioning....in the world! We have a rare jewel here in our Treasure Valley, and we need to show apprecia- tion and have a great experience. Bring your grandchildren as they will not likely have ever heard anything like that pipe organ!

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior (60 or better) and $5 for youth under 13. Tickets at the door are $2.00 premium, so get your tickets -from “[email protected]” or call her at 375- 2794.

Come on, be honest, and confess your OOPS’es for us all to enjoy/share your pain. Please be a man/ woman and take ownership by providing Nancy O. with your story. Send your name and OOPS story to Nancy Otterness to be included in the next newsletter! Terry Thompson has sweetened the pot by adding a prize of $5.00 to be awarded to the best monthly OOPS story. Terry has “volunteered” Dave C and Nancy O to judge the stories!

This month’s winner is Wes Seideman I am a relatively new member of IBCC and have owned this LBC of mine (a ‘63 MGB) only since June. I do have experience with British bugs’, however, it is as a long-time owner of a Ford Cortina GT (actually several Cortina’s). However, back to the “B” story. I just purchased my buggy in June, trailered it home from Colville, WA., and was just getting acquainted with it when I determined that I only had a key to the ignition, not to any of the doorlocks or the trunk. Being the resourceful person that I try to be, I hunted down a new trunk lock assembly from one of the usual sources and had it shipped to me. After studying the workings of the existing lock, I pro- ceeded to disassemble the current mechanism and carefully installed the new assembly. I had closely studied the movement of the release “finger” to make sure that I had it properly oriented in the lock, then closed the trunk. Upon pressing the lock cylinder to unlock the trunk, I was dismayed to just feel the lock plunger simply slide in and out without touching the release lever. Can you imagine my sinking feeling as I am studying my shiny new toy car thinking that I might have to destroy the trunk lid to get to my spare tire? And this after only one month of ownership! OOPS!

Then I recalled a conversation with the former owner and restorer of the car that the prior owner had cut two large openings into the panel behind the cockpit for his stereo speakers. The restoration process required a new back inner panel to cover up the holes, and he had dressed up the trunk side with a piece of nice black plas- tic cut carefully to hide the cutouts. I was successful in removing the two covers and by gingerly poking a long stick with a slanted end was able to release the trunk lock. Whew!! Now to ascertain why my carefully installed new lock wasn’t working. I compared the pieces from the original lock to the one that I had installed an discov- ered that the “finger” that attaches to the bottom of the cylinder had been modified by the restorer by adding about 1/4” to it, making it reach down further than the factory assembly. By switching out that finger, I was able to make everything work just fine but not until after a near heart attack.
