Bodies . . . The Exhibition, and Titanic: The Experience, will take over the former Movieland Wax Museum building where they will display actual human bodies and Titanic artifacts that have been viewed by over 40 million people from around the globe. The City recently partnered with Premier Exhibitions, Inc., a leading presenter of museum quality exhibitions, agreeing to lease the building for 21 months, however, the company is interested in staying in the area permanently with their exhibits. “We feel privileged to have been selected as the opening Orange County location for these two incredible exhibitions,” says City Consultant Ruben Lopez. “Overall, it’s going to be an unbelievably, memorable experience.” BODIES . . . The Exhibition, is a close-up, educational view into the human body, featuring over 200 human bodies, whole and dissected, that have been preserved using a revolutionary process called polymer preservation. Viewers will be able to closely explore the body’s unique skeletal, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, digestive, circulatory and urinary systems. Titanic: The Experience, allows viewers to travel back in time as trained actors portray passengers and crews. Known as one of the world’s largest ships, the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, when it hit an iceberg. Approximately 1,500 lives were lost. The exhibition features a fi rst-hand look at authentic artifacts recovered from the wreckage 2.5 miles beneath the ocean’s surface, as well as re-creations of some of the ship’s interior rooms. Premier will lease the building, which was initially slated for demolition. They will be responsible for maintenance, utilities, security and special county assessment costs, relieving the City of roughly $85,000 in upkeep fees. Premier will also spend about $500,000 to $600,000 in renova- tions for the building. One of the current considerations for the Premier Exhibitions permanent location is The Source, a 450,000 square-foot, mixed-use project currently under construction at Beach Boulevard and Orangethorpe Avenue. This modern retail destination is scheduled to open in 2014 and will hopefully house the Bodies and Titanic exhibitions. The Exhibitions are currently scheduled to open at the former Movieland Wax Museum location this summer. On occasion, Titanic: The Ex- perience, will offer catered dinner shows as well. Reservations and ticket information can be obtained by visiting www.prxi.com, visiting the California Welcome Center at Orange County at 6601 Beach Blvd., Buena Park, www.VisitBuenaPark.com, or calling (800) 541-3953. The Andrews Brothers is just one of overer 80 professional shows provided by the City’s Civic Theatre program over the years. In fact, the Theatre’s fi rst show was Oklahoma in the mid 1960s, which turned out to be the start of a successful, decades-longlong theatre program. “We produce quality Broadway shows in an inviting environment,”nt,” says Rebecca McGuire, Fine Arts Commissioner and Chair of the Civicvic Theatre Committee. “Our program also serves as a launching pad fforor many of the actors who go on to perform in bigger houses.” One of the most unique features in making Buena Park’s theatre pro-o- gram memorable is that it has always been held outside, in warmm weather, under the stars. This year, it will be held inside while Ehlerss outdoor Plaza is being renovated, but the setting is promised to be just as, if not more, sensational. “We have planned an intimate setting which will take you back too WWII with upbeat songs from that era,” says Rebecca, who praises Buena Park forfor its uniqueness and for being a special place to live. “This is one performanceormance not to be missed. Everyone is encouraged to attend this fun-fi lled evening.” The Andrews Brothers August 9 - 31, 2013

Fitness 8 BuenaPark BuenaParkCityNewsBP Water Your Lawn, Not the Streett Excessive irrigation is often the most signifi cant factor in landscapescape maintenance activities contributing to storm sewer pollutant loads.oads. Pollutants that have dissolved in irrigation water, or particles andand materials coated with fertilizers and pesticides, may be suspendedded in the irrigation fl ow and carried to the nearest catch basin aandnd into the storm drain system, where they eventually reach ourour creeks, rivers and ocean. And, hosing off outside areas to wash them down not only con-n- sumes large quantities of water, but also transports the pollut-t- ants, sediments and waste to the storm drain system. The following are useful tips to help keep pollutants out off storm drains:

 Irrigation systems must be properly adjusted to refl ect seasonal water needs. When it is raining, turn the system off.ff.

 Do not hose off outside surfaces to clean; sweep wwithith a broom instead.

 Water landscapes only when needed; two-to-three times a week is usu- ally suffi cient.

 Use controllers on automatic sprinkler systems. A great deal of water can be wasted in a short amount of time by leaving landscape sprinklers on longer than necessary. “Replace  Monitor the sprinkler heads and adjust as needed. water-using plants  Position the sprinklers so the water lands on the landscaped area and not on the concrete. Avoid runoff, and make sure sprinklers cover just with the lawn or garden, not sidewalks, driveways or gutters. drought-resistant  Water slowly and thoroughly during cool, windless hours in the early morning before 10 a.m., or in the late afternoon after 4 p.m. types”  To minimize runoff, water in shifts; break the watering time in half and wait an hour in between. If you have an irrigation clock, it can be pro- grammed to split the watering time automatically.

 Periodically check for leaks in irrigation lines. Leaks can be detect- ed by having a periodic shutdown of all water-using facilities, and reading the water meter at intervals of the shutdown. If any move- ment of the meter dials occurs, water is leaking. If a leak is located, repair it as soon as possible.

 Replace water-using plants with drought-resistant types such as California native and Mediterranean climate plants. Most low-water using plants only need watering once every one to two weeks in the warm months. In the cool months, there’s often no need to water.

 Apply organic mulch around all shrubs and trees. Mulch reduces evapo- ration loss, minimizes weeds, and adds organic matter to the soil. Don’t forget to reapply mulch once it has broken down. Protect 9 BPCityNewsBuenaPark BuenaPark Improving Buena Park’s Water Supply Th e “Upper Zone Improvement Project” paves the way for a more fl exible City water supply Water is a vital resource not only for domestic and business use, but also for fi re protection, as well as being one of the key resources needed after a major disaster. Due to the essential needs of this precious commodity, the City of Buena Park has created a strategic plan to ensure our water is always available, and affordable. Where does our water come from? Currently, 70% of Buena Park’s water supply comes from City water wells, and 30% is imported from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD). The City’s water system was designed to operate utilizing both sources of water supply. MWD serves the primary water supply for the northern portion of the City (Bellhurst area). In this area, the water provided by MWD is delivered at a higher pressure, relative to the rest of the City’s water system. This is needed to meet the hydraulic needs at this higher elevation area. Portions of the City that are at a lower elevation are primarily supplied by our eight water wells. Is a water shortage or outage a real possibility? If the City loses its MWD water supply due to an earthquake or other natural disas- ter, it is possible that specifi c areas in the City could experience a water outage. One of the key strategic plan goals for the City water system is to make infrastruc- ture improvements that will allow us to have independence from costly imported MWD water. Upon completion of the proposed improvements, the City will be able “Upon its completion, to use its water wells to meet all of the City’s water needs. What are the proposed improvements? the City will be able to pump Improvements will include installation of pumps and other facilities to provide the required pressure for the upper zone, which is currently supplied by MWD. Because more well water (less expensive of the location of the improvements, we named it the “Upper Zone Improvement than MWD water) as it Project.” This is an important emergency response project that adds operational fl exibility, and even a level of redundancy to our water system. Upon its comple- becomes available.” tion, the City will be able to pump more well water (less expensive than MWD wa- ter) as it becomes available. Orange County Water District (OCWD) has recently requested that the City pump additional quantities of well water, however, we are limited by our existing water system design. The “Upper Zone Improvement Proj- ect” will address this limitation, provide system fl exibility, and ultimately reduce our water supply costs. The Project is under the design phase this year, and con-

ces struction should be completed in the following two years. For more information, please contact Francisco Gutierrez, P.E. Associate Engineer, Department of Public Works/Engineering at (714) 562-3687.
