A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies University of Warwick. October 1991. Summary of Thesis. The Poetics of Impurity: Louis MacNeice, Writing and the Thirties. This thesis argues that the notion of 'impurity' may be taken as a model for paradigms in MacNeice's texts which are subjected to undercutting and transgression, by virtue of their presumed identity, their context, and by the workings of the text. This impurity challenges notions of MacNeice as an exponent of 'common-sense' empiricism. Chapter One examines notions of purity and impurity as promoted by MacNeice in the thirties. MacNeice's exposition in Modern Poetry is shown to be contradictory. Comparison with the figure of Orwell indicates that Modern Poetry, and its promotion of common-sense 'experience' or 'life', is an unreliable guide to MacNeice's thirties work. Chapter Two examines notions of 'History' in the thirties, and of MacNeice's treatment of time in a number of poems. MacNeice's poems demonstrate a conception of time-as-difference, which is shown to be historically constructed within 'static' or 'imaginary' frames of reference. -

Moir, Jr. Washington, DC 2012 ‘More than glass’: Louis MacNeice’s Poetics of Expansion Michael A. Moir, Jr., PhD Director: Virgil Nemoianu, PhD The Northern Irish poet and dramatist Louis MacNeice, typically regarded as a minor modernist following in the footsteps of Yeats and Eliot or living in the shadow of Auden, is different from his most important predecessors and contemporaries in the way he attempts to explode conventional ideas of place, presenting human subjects in transit and shifting, melting landscapes, rooms and buildings that tend to blend in with their sur- roundings. While Yeats, Eliot and Auden evince a siege mentality that leads them to build religious or political Utopias easily separable from the chaos of the contemporary world, MacNeice denies the validity of any such imaginary constructs, instead taking apart the boundaries of imaginary private worlds, from rooms to islands to pastoral landscapes. Mac- Neice’s representations of space favor what Fredric Jameson terms ‘postmodern space’: his poems and radio plays operate outside of ideas of ‘home,’ ‘church,’ or ‘nation,’ opposing the rigidity of such places to the fluidity of travel. MacNeice has been much misunderstood and underestimated, and a reappraisal of his career is due, particularly given the amount of material that has been published or reis- sued since his centenary in 2007. -

Allen, Brendan University of Maine, MA Student Originally from Kansas, Brendan Allen currently attends the University of Maine, where he studies poetry and poetics and teaches freshman composition. Alongside Jill Hughes, he co-facilitates The Happenings Series—a collaborative, multi-genre performance series. He is the winner of the 2017 Grady Award for poetry. Ardam, Jacquelyn Colby College, Visiting Assistant Professor Jacquelyn Ardam is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She holds a PhD in English from UCLA, and is at work on a book manuscript titled "Reading from A to Z: Alphabets, Experiments, Pedagogies." Her work has been published in venues such as Modernism/modernity, Comparative Literature Studies, Contemporary Women's Writing, the LA Review of Books, Public Books, and Jacket2. Azcuy, Mary Kate Monmouth University, Associate Professor Mary Kate Azcuy is an Associate Professor of English, at Monmouth University, in New Jersey. Her research specialties are 20th and 21st century American literature, critical theory, gender, mythology, and creative writing. She studied creative writing at Princeton and NYU, earning her Master's from NYU and Doctorate from Drew University. She has a book on Louise Gluck's Averno and mythology forthcoming.
