Prof. , PhD., ”Vasile Goldis” University of the West, Arad Abstract: During the 17th century, the grand ban of Craiova was the most important high official of Wallachia, most coveted by the big boyars, big dime with authority in the counties west of the river Olt. Preda Buzescu great dignity ban occupied briefly in the fall of 1600, called Michael the Brave Preda Buzescu Wallachian boyars filohabsburgice leader was an excellent military commander, who has proved his talent in fighting the Turks, decided partisan alliance with the Emperor Rudolf II. No other ban had the autority of Preda Buzescu, between 1602-1608, in the counties west of river Olt, during the 17th century. He had a chancellery that issued documents without invoking the authority of the prince regnant. Preda Buzescu has ordered the Wallachian*s army. For services faithful to the great dime Preda Buzescu full advantage of his generosity Radu Serban. Few months before his death Preda Buzescu, Radu Serban confirms his dominion over the villages Fauresti,, Novaci, Susani, Rudariu and Seaca. ERIK SANDEWALL AbsTRACT Since Bacil Kirtley in 1958 proposed that Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula, the best known literary character ever, shared his historical past with the Wallachian Voivode Vlad III Dracula, an intense debate about this connection has developed and other candidates have been suggested, like the Hungarian General János Hunyadi – a proposal resurfacing in the most recent annotated Dracula edition by Leslie Klinger (2008). By close-reading Stoker’s sources, his research notes and the novel, I will demonstrate that Stoker’s narrative initially links his Count to the person of Vlad III indeed, not Hunyadi, although the novelist neither knew the ruler’s first name, nor his father’s name, nor his epithet “the Impaler”, nor the cruelties attributed to him. Still – or maybe for this very reason – Stoker did not wish to uphold this traceable identity: In Chapter 25, shortly before the decisive chase, he removes this link again, by way of silent substitution, cloaked by Professor van Helsing’s clownish distractions. Like the Vampire Lord Ruthven, disappearing through the “vampire trap” constructed by James R. Planché for his play The Brides of the Isles in the English Opera House, later renamed to Lyceum Theatre and run by Stoker, the historical Voivode Vlad III Dracula is suddenly removed from the stage: In the final chapters, the Vampire Hunters pursue a nameless double. -

Chapter 1 The Greek “Proto-Question” and the Birth of Modern Citizenship 1 Natives and Foreigners under the Old Regime In 1611 a group of Wallachian boyars, led by the mare stolnic (High Steward) Bărcan of Merișani, plotted the assassination of the ruling Prince Radu Mihnea (r. 1611–1616). The attack was intended as retaliation for the fact that Radu Mihnea “surrounded them with numerous Greeks from Istanbul and Rumeli,” as a local chronicler reported.1 The plot was soon discovered by the Prince, who decapitated Bărcan along with eight other great boyars. This dramatic episode—the first instance in the Principalities’ history when “blood was spilled because of the Greeks,” as the historian A. D. Xenopol put it—marked the outbreak of what, in retrospect, Romantic historiography would term the “Greek Question” in Moldavia and Wallachia.2 Over the next two centuries (1611–1821), this “question” unfolded as a succession of violent anti-Greek plots, uprisings and legal campaigns by the local nobility and merchants against the unchecked political penetration and dominance of Ottoman Greeks. After the initial 1611 plot, a second major anti-Greek uprising took place during the reign of Alexandru Iliaș (r. 1616–1618); a third under Alexandru Coconul (r. 1623–1627); a fourth under Leon Tomșa (r. 1629–1632); a fifth under Matei Basarab (r. 1632–1654); a sixth under Radu Leon (r. 1664–1669); a seventh under Nicolae Mavrocordat (r. 1716–1717); and, finally, an eighth under Ioan Gheorghe Caragea (r. 1812–1818). This last uprising culminated with the 1821 failed coop- eration and eventual conflict between Tudor Vladimirescu and the Greek un- derground organization Philiki Hetaireia (Society of Friends), leading to the end of Phanariot rule. -

Manolis G. Varvounis – Nikos Rodosthenous Religious Traditions of Mount Athos on Miraculous Icons of Panagia (The Mother of God) At the monasteries and hermitages of Mount Athos, many miraculous icons are kept and exhibited, which are honored accordingly by the monks and are offered for worship to the numerous pilgrims of the holy relics of Mount Athos.1 The pil- grims are informed about the monastic traditions of Mount Athos regarding these icons, their origin, and their miraculous action, during their visit to the monasteries and then they transfer them to the world so that they are disseminated systemati- cally and they can become common knowledge of all believers.2 In this way, the traditions regarding the miraculous icons of Mount Athos become wide-spread and are considered an essential part of religious traditions not only of the Greek people but also for other Orthodox people.3 Introduction Subsequently, we will examine certain aspects of these traditions, based on the literature, notably the recent work on the miraculous icons in the monasteries of Mount Athos, where, except for the archaeological and the historical data of these specific icons, also information on the wonders, their origin and their supernatural action over the centuries is captured.4 These are information that inspired the peo- ple accordingly and are the basis for the formation of respective traditions and re- ligious customs that define the Greek folk religiosity. Many of these traditions relate to the way each icon ended up in the monastery where is kept today. According to the archetypal core of these traditions, the icon was thrown into the sea at the time of iconoclasm from a region of Asia Minor or the Near East, in order to be saved from destruction, and miraculously arrived at the monastery. -

The mission of the Romanian Orthodoxy during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521) Rev PhD Std Marian Bădulescu,1 Abstract: After 1453, the center of the Byzantine culture is preserved in Wallachia, where it takes place a similar phenomenon to the Western Renaissance. The Romanian Orthodoxy had in the person and in the work of the voivode Neagoe Basarab the main missionary exponent outside and inside the country. His main work, Teachings to his son Theodosius, follows the Byzantine tradition and it depicts the model of a prince called to incarnate the first Christian moral ideas, then the political ideal. Compared to similar works in the West, Neagoe's work is the proof that the medieval Romanian Orthodoxy has largely influenced the political thinking of the Romanian rulers in a profoundly human manner. The Romanians formed as a distinct people and civilization under the cultural and religious influence of Byzantium. 146 HARVARD SQUARE SYMPOSIUM | THE FUTURE OF KNOWLEDGE The Establishment of the First Metropolitan See of Wallachia Daniel Gligore ABSTRACT: The seat of the first Metropolitan See of Wallachia— which was canonically recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople—was established at Curtea de Argeș, alongside with the Princely seat. This ecclesiastical structure—together with the existing princely seats which were attested long before the foundation of Wallachia—demonstrate that “the [Romanian] nation was born spontaneously and naturally as a Christian nation, because conventional Christianity together with the Latin culture1 contributed to its formation. We are Romanians because we are Christians and we are Christians because we are Romanians.” KEY WORDS: The Metropolitan See of Wallachia, Iachint, Nicolae Alexandru Basarab, Curtea de Argeş, recognition of Metropolitan See. T he recognition of the Metropolitan See of Wallachia by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople at the perseverance of Prince Nicolae Alexandru Basarab—as seen in the two thomoses of the Ecumenical Synod of May 1359—was an act of great complexity and political importance for both sides. The documents mark the establishment of the official relations between the Metropolitan2 See of Wallachia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate; the highest ecclesiastic authority of the Eastern Church (The Orthodox Church). These documents also note the adoption of reciprocal duties, which include the dependence of the Metropolitan See 146 Gligore: First Metropolitan See of Wallachia 147 of Wallachia on Constantinople, and the inclusion of Muntenia’s3 bishop among the members of the Synod of Constantinople. The act of recognition of the Metropolitan See is neither an embryonic act nor an act of establishment.4 It is the acknowledgment of a reality which existed for a long time on the territories from the North of the Danube. -

Grigore Leibniz Institute of European History, Mainz THE SPACE OF POWER STATE CONSOLIDATION BY MEANS OF RELIGIOUS POLICY IN THE DANUBE PRINCIPALITIES IN THE FOURTEENTH TO SIXTEENTH CENTURIES Abstract This article shows the close link between religious policy, especially that of the confessional option, and the politicization of space in the building processes of territorial states. The study focuses on the two Danube Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, which implemented their state building owing to three decisive steps: i) the jurisdictional option in favour of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople; ii) the territorial and social implementation of the Byzantine- Orthodox faith by institutional infrastructure and monastic reform; iii) the Ortho- dox enculturation of the two Wallachian principalities. The main goal of this chapter is to show how cultural and historical phenomena transform the abstract geo- graphical space into the political space of a state. Because of its wealth and proximity to the Black Sea, its dynamic commercial centres, and the prosperous Bulgarian and Serbian territories, this area was highly disputed between different powers of both the Latin and Orthodox faiths, not to speak of the Tatars and – after the fourteenth century – the Ottomans. The paper briefly deals with the Byzantine studies and politics of culture in Turkey between 1926 and 1950s, which may have helped Istanbul’s election as the host of 10th International Congress. It focuses on the preparations for the 10th International Congress by the Turkish organizing committee and Turkish government, based on the minutes of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the archival documents of Cahide Tamer, and finally it discusses the 10th International Congress, members of the Turkish organizing committee, participants, papers, excursions, exhibitions, and publications.
