SEED MORPHOLOGY OF THE GENUS SILENE: CARYOPHYLLACEAE FROM PAKISTAN AND KASHMIR Anjum Perveen Department of Botany, University of Karachi, Karachi-75270, Pakistan. ABSTRACT Seed morphology of fifteen species of the genus Silene: Caryophyllaceae has been examined by light and scanning microscope. Viz., Silene arenosa C.Koch, Silene brahuica Boiss., Silene citrina Boiss., Silene coeli-rosea (L.) Gordon, Silene conoidea L., Silene falconeriana Benth., Silene gonosperma (Rupr.) Bocquet, Silene indica Roxb. ex Oth., Silene longisepala E. Nasir, Silene moorcroftiana Wall ex Benth, Silene pseudo-verticillata E. Nasir, Silene staintonii S.A.Ghazanfer, Silene tenuis Willd., Silene viscosa (L.) pers., and Silene vulgaris (Moech) Garcke. Seed generally small-medium, 0.3 -2.0 mm long, light-dark brown, black, light green or greyish green in colour. Shape mostly reniform or orbicular , rarely pyriform, mostly laterally compressed, hilum distinct, surface generally striate with distinct groove in between striae , striae broad-elongated, finely scabrate, mostly without tubercule rarely tuberculated. On the basis of surface pattern 16 species are divided into two seed types. Viz., Type-I: Silene arenosa and Type-II: Silene longisephala. Key is prepared based on Seed morphological characters. Seed morphology of the genus Silene is significantly helful at the specific level. Key-words: Seed morphology, Silene, Caryophyllaceae, Kashmir, Pakistan. INTRODUCTION Silene is a large complex polymorphic genus belongs to the family Caryophyllaceae representing about 600 species in the temperate regions of the world (Kubitzki , 2002a,b). The main concentration of the species is in Europe, Asia and North Africa. In Pakistan 28 species are found, most of which are central Asiatic or Himalayan in their affinities. -

ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with speciation and population genetics in the plant genus Silene (section Elisanthe). The introductory chapter is a literature review covering characteristics of the species studied, and the current literature on their evolutionary dynamics and population genetics. The second and third chapters cover techniques used in all experiments, such as DNA extraction, sequencing and genotyping protocols, and explain the rationale behind the initial experimental design. The fourth chapter focuses on the multi-locus analysis of autosomal gene sequences from S. latifolia and S. dioica. The relationship between the two species was investigated using various analyses such as isolation modeling and admixture analysis providing estimates of evolutionary distance and extent of historical gene flow. The maintenance of the species despite frequent hybridization at present-day hybrid zones is discussed. -

MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. It is made available under aCC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license. 1 Abstract 2 3 The angiosperm genus Silene is a model system for several traits of ecological and evolutionary 4 significance in plants, including breeding system and sex chromosome evolution, host-pathogen 5 interactions, invasive species biology, heavy metal tolerance, and cytonuclear interactions. 6 Despite its importance, genomic resources for this large genus of approximately 850 species are 7 scarce, with only one published whole-genome sequence (from the dioecious species S. latifolia). 8 Here, we provide genomic and transcriptomic resources for a hermaphroditic representative of 9 this genus (S. noctiflora), including a PacBio Iso-Seq transcriptome, which uses long-read, 10 single-molecule sequencing technology to analyze full-length mRNA transcripts and identify 11 paralogous genes and alternatively spliced genes. -
