ADDMA operates the City of Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau, (ACVB) the city’s official Destination Management Organisation. The ACVB focuses on both the MICE and city break sectors through destination management development marketing services. The ACVB implements a master plan that entails actions for increasing average length of stay, smoothing out seasonality and building up the local visitors’ economy. It develops cooperation networks between the private and public sectors and strengthens connections with the international travel industry. Moreover, major tasks include branding and implementing an inte- grated communication and PR strategy as well as running visitor information and management services.     Athens Journal of History January 2016 Santa Fosca in Torcello and the Middle Byzantine Churches in Eastern Greece: Preliminary Comparison and Remarks on Common Features and Differences By Antonella Manzo The main aim of this work is to critically examine Santa Fosca building period through the analysis of the similarities as well as the differences with some churches located in Greece and belonging to the so-called octagonal domed type. In fact, since the second half of the Nineteenth century a historiographical tradition has compared Santa Fosca with these Greek Middle-Byzantine churches, where eight supports, piers or columns, arranged in a regular or irregular octagon, receive the loads from the cupola. The comparison is based on the direct analysis of these buildings: the structural configuration, the constructive materials and techniques as well as the affinities in decoration, occurring both inside and outside, are under investigation. This contribution offers a new perspective, from which it could be possible to study the period of erection of the Venetian church, a topic that is still object of debate among the scientific community. Introduction Torcello is an island belonging to the Northern Venetian Laguna, which lives its golden age during the X-XI century AD: in his Administrando Imperio of 927 Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus defines Torcello as emporion mega, to testify the great importance of its intense trades with the Orient. The church of Santa Fosca is located on the island at the Southern side of the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, whose origins date back to the inscription of 639 AD, discovered during the excavations of 1895.

    CHAPTER 10 Commoning Over a Cup of Coffee: The Case of Kafeneio, a Co-op Cafe at Plato’s Academy Chrysostomos Galanos The story of Kafeneio Kafeneio, a co-op cafe at Plato’s Academy in Athens, was founded on the 1st of May 2010. The opening day was combined with an open, self-organised gather- ing that emphasised the need to reclaim open public spaces for the people. It is important to note that every turning point in the life of Kafeneio was somehow linked to a large gathering. Indeed, the very start of the initiative, in September 2009, took the form of an alternative festival which we named ‘Point Defect’. In order to understand the choice of ‘Point Defect’ as the name for the launch party, one need only look at the press release we made at the time: ‘When we have a perfect crystal, all atoms are positioned exactly at the points they should be, for the crystal to be intact; in the molecular structure of this crystal everything seems aligned. It can be, however, that one of the atoms is not at place or missing, or another type of atom is at its place. In that case we say that the crystal has a ‘point defect’, a point where its struc- ture is not perfect, a point from which the crystal could start collapsing’.
