Academic B. Tech Final year project on Multiferroics - Magnetoelectric Effect using alternating Projects PMN-PT and Terfenol-D layers August 2008 - Present Guide: Dr. M.S.R. Rao (Professor) Nano Functional Materials Technology Centre and Materials Science Research Centre, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology - Madras

Date of Birth: 9th July, 1986 1 of 3 Email: [email protected] Sudarshan Narayanan Resum´e

Description : Working on extraction of Magnetoelectric effect using alternating layers of com- posite Magnetostrictive and Piezoelectric materials. The piezoelectric material being used is PMN-PT (PbMn 1 Nb 2 O3 - PbTiO3) and the magnetostrictive material is Terfenol-D (TbDyFe2). 3 3 The primary idea of having such layered multiferroics is to utilize the high magnetostrictive and piezoelectric coefficients of Terfenol-D and PMN-PT respectively, so as to extract a potential difference on the application of a magnetic field and vice versa.

“Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon Nanotubes” May 2008 to July 2008 Indian Academy of Sciences - Summer Research Fellow 2008

Guides: Dr. S.B. Krupanidhi (Chairman, Professor) and Dr. K.K. Nanda (Assistant Professor) Materials Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Description : Worked on the the synthesis of Carbon nanotubes (Multi-walled bundles and helical/coiled) through Pyrolysis techniques using various precursors, followed by the study of the I-V characteristics of the synthesized samples. The main objective was to obtain I-V char- acteristics of CNTs of varying bundle diameters, over a wide range of temperatures to obtain the dependence of the conductance of the samples, on temperature and bundle diameter.

“Customization and solving of Ordinary Differential Equations on a Grid of points” With S. Karthikeyan (Dual Degree), A.R. Aakash (B.Tech), Department of Electrical Engineer- ing, IIT-Madras May 2006 to July 2006

Guide: Dr. Harishankar Ramachandran (Professor) Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology - Madras

Description : Worked on customizing 4th order Runge Kutta method for solving ODEs for points on a grid. Also studied implicit methods for the same problem and presented workable solutions for the same.
