This study compares the results from radiocarbon measurements performed on charcoal and burnt bone from the same contexts in order to assess the reliability of the two materials for dating. The study deals with seven Mesolithic sites in Norr- land and Dalecarlia, an area where datable organic material is difficult to find. The bone samples have been chosen for the study and the charcoal samples are mainly from previous work. The study shows that both materials are suitable for dating as long as they are sampled correctly and with knowledge of the errors that can occur. Manninen & Kjel Knutsson ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to make the first comprehensive survey of inland sites with oblique points in the northernmost parts of Fennoscandia. The chronological and technological relation of these points with similar points from Mesolithic contexts discussed in earlier Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish studies is also assessed. After a presentation and analysis of the available data it is concluded that the oblique points on the northern inland sites date mainly to c. 5800−4700 calBC and that at the time they were located in a boreal forest environment. It is further suggested that the discussed points in fact belong to a technological tradition that extended over the whole of eastern and northern Fennoscandia during the Late Mesolithic.

    “Let’s begin with the youngest!” Minority language revitalisation through preschool Leena Huss Background In February 2000, Sweden ratified two Council of Europe conventions: the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. As a result, five national minorities and their languages were recognized officially: the Finns and Finnish, the Jews and Yiddish, the Roma and Romani, the Sami and the Sami language and the Tornedalians and Meänkieli. The last of the new national minority languages, Meänkieli, differed from the others in several respects. First, it had acquired language status as a result of the ratification process, while being formerly regarded as a dialect of Finnish (“Tornedalen Finnish”). Both languages had a common history beginning in the Finnish spoken widely in the northern parts of the Kingdom of Sweden until Sweden lost its eastern part to Russia in 1809. When the new border was drawn through Tornedalen, a culturally and linguistically homogenous area in the north, part of the Finnish-speakers became a minority in Sweden. On the other side of the border, Finnish-speakers became part of the majority population in what is today Finland. When nationalist policies gained momentum in Sweden in the late 1800s, Tornedalen Finnish remained the vernacular spoken in homes and the village square, while Swedish became the only language of official domains. The only exception was the Lutheran Church which has retained Finnish as one of its languages until this day in the whole country. Throughout a century of coercive assimilation policies in Sweden, Finnish was, therefore, a low status mother tongue but also the lingua sacra of the Tornedalian population.

It became clear that harmoni- zation of national indices is necessary, as the evaluation of the ecological state using sh analysis gave very different results depending on the system used. With phytobenthos, the results were very close to each other.

    Diakonal behovsinventering i Pajala församling och kommun – en inspiration till fortsatt gestaltande av kyrkans uppdrag 2014 Sammanfattning Pajala som storförsamling har existerat endast sedan årsskiftet 2006-2007, under ett antal år fram till dess har de fem ursprungliga församlingarna bit för bit slagits samman till ett pastorat med samma geografiska yta som Pajala kommun. Med anledning av denna omfattande sammanslagning fann man behov av att göra en diakonal inventering för att kartlägga och få kännedom om pastoratets diakonala behov. Pastoratet är stort och inventeringen kan, trots omfattningen, inte ge en helt rättvis beskrivning av församlingens diakonala behov. Inventeringen har lagt tonvikt på församlingens sociala situation och hur kyrkan kan bistå med sina tjänster där behov föreligger. Intervjuer har genomförts med närområdesrepresentanter och anställda inom Svenska kyrkan. Vad gäller intervjuer med kyrkans egen personal har frågorna inriktat sig på det diakonala uppdraget och de anställdas syn på professionen. Meningen är att intervjupersonernas utsagor med efterföljande reflektioner från författaren ska stimulera till dialog om vilka diakonala och sociala behov som finns, och är störst, i Pajala kommun och församling. Inventeringen har bland annat påvisat att det finns människor som lever ensamt och isolerat. Det är därmed en stor utmaning för kyrkan och andra aktörer i samhället att utforma en fungerande besöksverksamhet. I arbetet med att bygga upp denna verksamhet ingår att rekrytera frivilliga medarbetare. Den nyöppnade järnmalmsgruvan genomsyrar inventeringen där både positiva och negativa effekter på samhället och dess invånare belyses. Den nya situationen med gruvans nedläggande kommer fram i de dagsaktuella reflektionsavsnitten, situationen var en annan under intervjutillfällena.
