  • Sammy Strain Story, Part 3: the Imperials, 1961
Reprinted with permission from Echoes of the Past, Issue No. 103 (Spring 2013), pp. 17—24. The Sammy Strain Story—Part 3 The Imperials (1961—1963) by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner After a more than three very successful years on George Goldner’s End label, Little Anthony & the Impe- rials broke up in 1961. Most of those three years had been spent under the mentorship of Richard Barrett; ever since 1957 when as the Chesters, Barrett had res- cued them from the clutches of Apollo Records. But as the smoke cleared from the payola hearings in 1961, it was clear that the music industry was changing. By 1961, Richard Barrett was an independent producer and was distancing himself from George Goldner and Morris Levy of End/Roulette Records. Without Barrett’s lead- ership, the Imperials came apart. [For the early story of Little Anthony & The Imperials, see Echoes of the Past, Issue #82, 2007] Imperials’ Little Anthony Gourdine went solo, remaining with Roulette Records. Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord left to get married. Ernest Wright and Clarence Collins wanted to continue singing as the Imperials so they went to their mentor, Richard Barrett to help keep the group going. The Imperials, 1961. Left to right: Ernest Wright, Meanwhile, Sammy Strain was busy singing Sammy Strain, Clarence Collins, George Kerr. with the Impacts [see Steven Kahn’s story, this issue of (Photo courtesy of Sammy Strain) Echoes of the Past]. Strain and the Imperials had grown up together in Brooklyn. als and Ernest and Clarence told me to call you because “By then Richard Barrett was in my life,” said you sing first tenor.

  • SURF MUSIC by Geoffrey Himes
SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.

  • ARSC Journal, Fall 1989 223 Current Bibliography
CURRENT BIBLIOGRAPHY Tim Brooks As readers by now are aware, the purpose of "Current Bibliography" is to locate research on recording history that has appeared recently in small circulation collec tors' journals, most of which are not indexed elsewhere. It also includes news about those publications. To be indexed here an article must be in English, be reasonably substantive, and deal with recording history. Articles focussing on musicology, sociology, or current matters such as reviews of new LPs, record prices, and current artist activities are not included. If an article is accompanied by something remotely resembling a dis cography this is indicated by "W!D" or "discog." A ten-year cumulation of "Current Bibliography" is planned to contain about 6,000 citations and many added listings not originally published in the Journal; however, the form in which this will be published has not yet been decided. Issues covered this time are those received between August and November 1989. Most should still be available from the publishers at the addresses indicated below. If you contact one of these publishers or authors, please mention ARSC and "Current Bibliography." NOTES The City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society has announced the naming of its first Patron in more than 50 years, Oliver Berliner, grandson of the famous inventor. The only previous Patron of the society was none other than Emile Berliner's arch rival, Thomas A. Edison, who held the position from the society's founding in 1919 until his death in 1931. In the new publications department, Record Finder has launched a new maga zine called Record Proprietor's Monthly aimed at retail and mail order record deal ers.

  • The Big Beat: Origins and Development of Snare Backbeat and Other Accompanimental Rhythms in Rock’N’Roll
The Big Beat: Origins and Development of Snare Backbeat and other Accompanimental Rhythms in Rock’n’Roll Volume I: Chapters Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Garry Neville Tamlyn M.Mus. B.Mus. Grad.Dip.Ed. March, 1998 ii Abstract. This thesis focusses on the origins and development of snare backbeat in rock’n’roll. Some other accompanimental rhythms, such as cymbal rhythms, piano and double bass accompaniments, are investigated in order, firstly, to place snare backbeat within an accompanimental context and secondly, to elucidate some stylistic influences informing the development of snare backbeat. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One investigates references to rock rhythm in musicological, socio-cultural and journalistic accounts. Clarification of terminology and methodology used in the thesis is located at the beginning of Chapter Two. The latter half of Chapter Two details the frequency of occurrence of snare backbeat and other accompanimental rhythms in the recorded output of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, the Platters, Elvis Presley, and Little Richard. Subsequent chapters focus on the origins of snare backbeat: Chapter Three investigates the occurrence of snare backbeat in jazz styles in conjunction with the development of the drum kit; Chapter Four details the influence of rhythm and blues on rock’n’roll rhythm; and Chapter Five explores the rhythmic roots of the rock’n’roll backbeat in gospel and country and western musical styles. Conclusions are presented in Chapter Six. The thesis also contains four appendices.

CURRENT BIBLIOGRAPHY By Tim Brooks "Current Bibliography" is an annotated index to research on recording history that has appeared recently in small circulation journals. It also includes news about those publications. Articles indexed here must be in English, be reasonably substantive, and deal with recording history. Articles on musicology, sociology, or contemporary activities and reviews are not included. "W!D" or "discog." indicates that the article was accompanied by something at least remotely resembling a discography. Issues covered this time were received between September 1990 and March, 1991. If you contact one of these publishers or authors, please mention ARSC and "Current Bibliography." Notes Another three bite the dust. Whiskey, Women and... , a fine historical rhythm and blues periodical from Dan Kochakian of Haverhill, Mass., has discontinued publication effective with issue no. 18/19 (Fall 1989) due to "the usual reasons of increased prices and decreased income." WWA was originally published from c.1972- 1975, then revived from 1982-1989, so maybe it will be back one day. But don't count on it. Needle Time, from England's Brian Rust, has expired for similar reasons after a five year run. The first indication that something was amiss came when I received the November, 1990 issue and noticed on the cover a reproduction of the label of Gennett 4699-"Farewell Blues." Then there's JEMF Quarterly, the pioneering country and folk research journal, forced to close its doors after more than 20 years. The Quarterly must hold the record for delayed publication; its final issue bears a nominal date of "Fall/Winter 1985," a publication date of "Fall 1990," and was received in February 1991.

  • The Development of the Rhythm and Blues Saxophone Style: an Analytical and Performance Based Study
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RHYTHM AND BLUES SAXOPHONE STYLE: AN ANALYTICAL AND PERFORMANCE BASED STUDY by CHRISTOPHER JAMES COSTIGAN (Under the Direction of KENNETH FISCHER) ABSTRACT The purpose of this document is to provide an historical and performance based guide for the rhythm and blues saxophone style. Localized technical and stylistic innovations in Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, New York, Cincinnati, and the West Coast area contributed to the development and codification of a standard R&B saxophone style. The intent of this document is to function as a guide to important R&B saxophonists, their respective contributions to the style, and to present annotated transcriptions completed by the author. Eighteen of the artists and transcriptions were selected from the 1940s through the 1960s with specific performances and or works chosen based on the historical significance and usage of the specific R&B saxophone technique. Transcriptions nineteen and twenty are from 1973 and 1995 respectively and display the preservation and persistence of the R&B saxophone style. Each transcription includes the solo for the saxophone performer. Each annotation includes, but is not limited to the title of the work, original artist and biographical information on the saxophone soloist, related dates, specific recording, theoretical analysis, extended techniques, and dramatic devices. Chapter I is entitled “Organizational Plan and Review of Literature.” Chapter II, entitled “A Performers Guide to Rhythm and Blues Saxophone,” consists of the annotated analyses of selected transcriptions. The transcriptions appear in the transposed saxophone key providing the reader with an accurate account of the techniques employed by the performer. Chapter III, entitled “Conclusion,” explores the contribution of individualized R&B saxophone innovations to the fully developed style, contains a final summary of the document, and suggests areas for further study.

Not allowed to secure a lease in Hollywood, Record Shop (Inside) John Dolphin opened his first record shop on Central Avenue in 1948 and audaciously named it Dolphin’s of Hollywood. An almost instant success, the shop moved to a much larger location at the corner of Central and Vernon in 1950 and soon became one of the most well-known and successful record shops in the country.

It was sung on street-corners, in stairwells of tenement apartments, in high school toilets ... and it was preserved for posterity in recording studios. Most of the performers were African-American, and many of the songs were romantic – in sharp contrast to the bleak reality of urban African-American life at the time. Doo- Wop had its origins in the black pop and gospel groups of the pre-World War II era, but it flourished in the years after World WarIIand became a major contributing force to the evolution of Rock 'n' Roll. In fact, some eminent cultural historians cite re- cords like Sixty Minute Man and Gee are among the first Rock 'n' Roll records. Both of those classics, along with many more, are on BEAR FAMILY's definitive history of Doo-Wop, 'Street Corner Symphonies.' As always, you can trust BEAR FAMILY to get it right.
