It was sung on street-corners, in stairwells of tenement apartments, in high school toilets ... and it was preserved for posterity in recording studios. Most of the performers were African-American, and many of the songs were romantic – in sharp contrast to the bleak reality of urban African-American life at the time. Doo- Wop had its origins in the black pop and gospel groups of the pre-World War II era, but it flourished in the years after World WarIIand became a major contributing force to the evolution of Rock 'n' Roll. In fact, some eminent cultural historians cite re- cords like Sixty Minute Man and Gee are among the first Rock 'n' Roll records. Both of those classics, along with many more, are on BEAR FAMILY's definitive history of Doo-Wop, 'Street Corner Symphonies.' As always, you can trust BEAR FAMILY to get it right. Starting in 1939 with pre-Doo-Wop acts like the Golden Gate Quartet, the Ink Spots, and the Mills Brothers, 'Street Corner Sym- phonies' will take the story until the end of the Doo-Wop era in 1963. The Sammy Strain Story—Part 3 The Imperials (1961—1963) by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner After a more than three very successful years on George Goldner’s End label, Little Anthony & the Impe- rials broke up in 1961. Most of those three years had been spent under the mentorship of Richard Barrett; ever since 1957 when as the Chesters, Barrett had res- cued them from the clutches of Apollo Records. But as the smoke cleared from the payola hearings in 1961, it was clear that the music industry was changing. By 1961, Richard Barrett was an independent producer and was distancing himself from George Goldner and Morris Levy of End/Roulette Records. Without Barrett’s lead- ership, the Imperials came apart. [For the early story of Little Anthony & The Imperials, see Echoes of the Past, Issue #82, 2007] Imperials’ Little Anthony Gourdine went solo, remaining with Roulette Records. Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord left to get married. Ernest Wright and Clarence Collins wanted to continue singing as the Imperials so they went to their mentor, Richard Barrett to help keep the group going. The Imperials, 1961.     Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth A Different Kind Of Truth is Van Halen’s twelfth studio album, and their first in fourteen years. This album marks the recording reunion of Eddie and Alex Van Halen with original singer/front man David Lee Roth. Roth was the singer in Van Halen from 1974‐1985, and was replaced by Sammy Hagar when the band softened their hard rock sound into a more commercial pop rock sound in the mid‐1980s. Roth recorded two songs with Van Halen in 1996 for a greatest hits album released when Hagar left the band, and expectations were high that he would return for a new album, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen, and they recorded one weak album together. Touring reunions with both Hagar and Roth followed the departure of Cherone in 1999, but there was no new music recorded. There was much debate whether there would ever be another Van Halen album, as Eddie Van Halen was often seen drunk in public during his separation and after his divorce from actress Valerie Bertinelli. Furthermore, a YouTube video surfaced of Eddie, appearing to be near death, sitting in with a party band playing a Tommy Bolin song, and his guitar playing was pathetic.
