CIHA Newsletter Home | Calendar | Login Volume: 1 Issue: 1 October 3rd, 2018 Alum Semyon Der-Arguchintsev Signs NHL Contract It didn’t take long for Semyon Der-Arguchintsev(SDA) to make a lasting impression on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs signed the 76th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft to a three-year entry level contract immediately after playing in his first NHL pre-season game on September 21st. It was a busy summer for SDA after getting drafted on Friday June 23rd. He attended the Maple Leafs Development Camp the following Monday, then took part in the Rookie Tournament on September 8-9th before joining the Maple Leafs for their main Training Camp on September 13th. SDA was sent back to the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League for his 3rd season on September 26th after playing in one pre-season game. He will be counted on as the offensive catalyst for his team as he continues to develop into the player the Toronto Maple Leafs believe he can be. SDA joins Gabriel Vilardi as alumni who have signed NHL contracts. SCHOOL. Teacher Bios Kate Braid I have always had the dream of becoming a teacher, so after completing my Honours degree in Biology, I went straight into education at the University of Ottawa. After graduating, I left to go teach in England for three years which gave me lots of rich teaching experiences and an opportunity to travel. Once I returned home to Canada, I started working in outdoor education. I love all things nature and I try to get my classes outdoors as often as possible. As an educator, I feel responsible for teaching our future generations about the importance of our environment and I try to incorporate this into my teaching whenever possible. Please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected] Rachel Waldie I'm very excited to be starting my third year working at Blyth @CIHA. I have been teaching for eight years and have loved every second of it. I taught in England for four years and got the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures. Every summer I teach in the Blyth Summer Programs, and this past summer I had the amazing opportunity to teach in Ecuador in the Amazon Jungle and Galapagos Islands. I have a passion for teaching and love to give students as much experiential learning as possible. I am available via email at [email protected] any time and look forward to meeting many of you at Parents' Weekend. Travis Rycroft After retiring from professional hockey, I decided to follow my lifelong dream of becoming an educator. I am honoured to be part of the amazing team here at the Canadian International Hockey Academy where I can combine my passion for education and hockey. I know from my own personal experience that school can be intimidating and how hockey can foster the confidence, work ethic and other important life-long skills that help students reach their full potential both on and off the ice. Each student-athlete here at CIHA has a unique skill set and learning style and my goal as both an educator and a coach is to create a positive, team environment where we encourage and help one another develop as athletes, students and men. After all, education, like hockey, is a team sport. Please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Lindsay Cumming I have been teaching at CIHA since 2015. I am very lucky that I am able to teach a bit of everything. This year, I am teaching Grade 9 English and Math, Grade 10 History and Math, Grade 11 University level English, and supervising some online classes each semester. I am the head of the Matthew’s House and am exited for this year’s competition. I enjoy working with athletes since I was a figure skater for many years but am currently working towards qualifying to paddle at the World Championships in France in 2020. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or come and see me in Room 1. Anna Davydova I am the new Math/Science teacher at Blyth@CIHA. I'm originally from Moscow, Russia, but was living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia before joining Blyth Academy this year. I'm very excited to be part of Blyth@CIHA and look forward to getting to know all my students and co- workers better. I hold a Masters of Education Degree from Simon Fraser University and have lots of experience working with young athletes. Digital design and photography are among my hobbies, and I look forward to taking lots of great action shots at some events in the future. Please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected] The Personal Greatness Project The students in grades 10-12 participated in a two-day workshop on September 24th and 25th. The workshop was hosted by Corey Chadwick, who created the program based on his own life experience to give teens and young adults a head start that will impact their entire lives. Corey believes that just like a phone or computer has an operating system, so do each and every one of us - it's how we think, how we make decisions, and how we take actions. As technology changes so quickly, a computer's operating system gets regularly upgraded to make sure it's performing at an optimal level – but as the world around us changes just as quickly, we're still working with the same old operating system we've always had. We've had it for literally thousands of years and it's hardwired for mediocrity. He helped the boys realize that there’s something GREAT inside every one of them just waiting to come out. He encouraged them to take a stand against mediocrity, recognize their GREATNESS and how to raise the bar on who they are. He reiterated that it isn’t about fitting into someone else’s box, it’s about creating their own, and over the two days he helped them bridge the gap between who they are today and who they are capable of being. Our annual house teams competitions got off to a great start in the last few weeks as the students were made aware of their allegiances in the team announcement day followed by our first competition: a volleyball tournament. Every year we host a variety of competitions. Some physical, some mental and some just funny that allow our students to earn points for their respective teams. Similar to the Harry Potter Hogwarts set up, instead of famous wizards we use famous hockey players as our team names with Crosby (Ms. Braid), Matthews (Ms. Cumming), Price (Ms. Waldie), Karlsson (Ms. Davydova), and McDavid (Mr. Rycroft) house all doing battle. The volleyball tournament saw the Price house smash their way to an undefeated record and come in first place. They were followed by Matthews, Karlsson, McDavid and last years winners the Crosby house, who should stick to hockey pucks instead of volleyballs. Despite the Ottawa Senators trading Karlsson, we have decided to stick with our guy and change the Team Karlsson colour's to those of the San Jose Sharks. We will keep you posted as to when Team Karlsson have designed a new flag to represent their House. Recycling CIHA made a committment over the summer to improve our recycling habits with plastic, glass and cans as well as our paper recycling. In just a few short weeks we have seen a drastic reduction in the amount of waste we are collecting in the garbage bins. Recycling containers can be found throughout the school, arena and dorms. Another great step forward to improve our sustainability! Remember: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! HOCKEY. The hockey season is underway with all teams getting some game action. Midget Green and White are about a month into their season, while Bantam has already had a tournament and played a few regular season games. Midget AA played in four exhibition games and begin their season this week. High-School has played two exhibition games against the Bantams and we are actively searching for more games in addition to their tournaments. No stranger to the Ottawa area, Corey played his minor hockey for the Gloucester Rangers before moving onto the Ottawa 67s and eventually being drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2009. Having played a variety of roles throughout his career, Corey can look to his experiences to relate to players in almost every situation. Corey is excited to apply the same passion and work ethic that brought him success as a player into coaching. Corey is also entering his second year as the Guidance Counsellor with Blyth@CIHA.
