Patron has long espoused the approach: ‘Reach Out – Push Forward – Aim High’, and so from the beginning of 2017 we have curated a series of early evening talks by individuals who are the embodiment of this spirit. The continuing talks are an opportunity for friends of Patron to hear from those who have overcome adversity, devoted themselves to making a difference to the lives of others, or achieved truly exceptional feats. These events are not part of a fundraising exercise; they are intended to motivate, educate, inspire and enrich the Patron team, our friends and partners. Typically consisting of a talk followed by a Q&A session, the lectures offer an opportunity for informal conversation over drinks/light refreshments. • Jake Meyer, His Drive to Achieve His Ambitions Was Overwhelming and Inspired Us to Support His Cause
Reaching new heights Denise Goodwin Passion, determination and mental strength are all things you need to drive you forward – be that in business and the challenges we all face in life. When we met Jake Meyer, his drive to achieve his ambitions was overwhelming and inspired us to support his cause. Last year we sponsored his climb up K2 in aid of Walking with the Wounded, a charity supporting vulnerable armed services veterans. At the age of 21, Jake was the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest. He also fulfilled his dream of becoming the youngest man in the world to complete the Seven Summits (the highest mountain on each continent) and broke the World Record for climbing the 48 highest peaks of Continental USA in the shortest time possible. His list of achievements is undoubtedly prolific and made us realise that anything is possible in a lifetime. This year at Patron, we launched a lecture series and, in the first of a number of inspirational talks, had the pleasure of hearing about Jake’s experiences, challenges and successes. His journey up Mount Everest was thrilling but we were very conscious of the life‐threatening dangers Jake and his team had taken on the ascent and the descent. Jake showed us how they carried oxygen cylinders so they could breathe while ascending and showed us a photograph he had taken on his way up of ‘Green Boots’ – the frozen remains of a climber who has become a landmark on the main Northwest ridge route of Mount Everest, since his death in 1996.

  • Annual Report 2004/05 Introduction
ANNUAL REPORT 2004/05 INTRODUCTION In this annual report to University Court and to the wider community, Council has tried to capture something of the flavour of an extraordinary year. History will show whether 2004/05 was a watershed, but it certainly felt as though the pace and scale of change had been turned up a notch. By way of example, in September we had the opening by Lord Sainsbury of the Dorothy Hodgkin Building for integrative neuroscience and endocrinology. In January we received confirmation that Bristol had won bids to the Higher Education Funding Council for England to establish Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in both Chemistry and Medical Sciences. And in February came the opening by Her Majesty The Queen of the Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics Engineering (BLADE). Progress of this kind, which is doing so much to The Chairman received an Honorary keep the University at the forefront of research, enterprise and education, degree from the University in 2005. was accompanied by a welter of developments in our policies and See p 27. systems in pursuit of better services and greater efficiency. When change is taking place at such a rate and across such a broad front, it is all the more important to hold on to the things that are constant – in particular, the University’s broad aims, its values and its tried-and-tested methods. Council has been especially careful to maintain its rigorous approach to financial management issues. Thus it has continued to work hard to maintain a healthy operating surplus for the University and to exercise a level of prudence that has ensured the institution’s creditworthiness.

  • Bremont K2 Expedition with Jake Meyer.Pdf
Bremont K2 Expedition with Jake Meyer Bremont Watch Company is pleased to announce that its ambassador Jake Meyer sets off on Monday 8th June, 2009 in an attempt to climb K2. If he succeeds he will be the youngest person ever to climb K2 and Everest. Only 7 British people have managed to climb K2 and Bremont are proud to be supporting Jake on this amazing trip. K2 is the world's second highest mountain at 8,611m (28,251ft) - it is 239m lower than Everest, but presents a much more significant climbing challenge. Nearly 4000 people have reached the summit of Everest, only 302 have climbed K2. At least 77 have died on K2's slopes, giving her a 1:4 ratio of deaths to summits. This truly is the mountaineer's mountain. Jake, who has been an Ambassador for the distinguished British watch company since 2006 and wears a prototype ALT1-P timepiece, says of Bremont: “The Bremont watches demonstrate precise Swiss engineering with classic British design, and nothing would make me prouder than to fly the Union Flag from the summit of K2 with a Bremont on my wrist. K2 is a savage mountain which demands respect and focus; anyone attempting it must have utter trust of their abilities and their equipment in the most severe conditions, and I know that my Bremont will never let me down, however much of a pounding I get”. Jake Meyer At an early age, Jake Meyer had a dream of becoming the youngest person to climb the Seven Summits - the highest mountain on each continent.

A decade of pain and low prices means many producers have other priorities than expanding at the moment, he said. “A lot of those ladies and gentlemen for the last 13 years have kept their cost of produc- tion down, and they’ve really managed their farms well and survived,” he said. “But they’re behind on some of their working capital and some of the things that need to be done. “I’m sure they’re going to take their profit and meet some per- sonal goals and some farm goals prior to keeping those cows back.” That’s the plan on Jake Meyer’s farm south of Lethbridge. Location Entry Codes As part of CIE’s continual commitment to maintaining best practice in assessment, CIE uses different variants of some question papers for our most popular assessments with large and widespread candidature. The question papers are closely related and the relationships between them have been thoroughly established using our assessment expertise. All versions of the paper give assessment of equal standard. The content assessed by the examination papers and the type of questions is unchanged. This change means that for this component there are now two variant Question Papers, Mark Schemes and Principal Examiner’s Reports where previously there was only one. For any individual country, it is intended that only one variant is used. This document contains both variants which will give all Centres access to even more past examination material than is usually the case. The diagram shows the relationship between the Question Papers, Mark Schemes and Principal Examiners’ Reports that are available.
