The Katoomba Group (http://www.katoombagroup.org): The Katoomba Group seeks to address key challenges for developing markets for ecosystem services, from enabling legislation to establishment of new market institutions, to strategies of pricing and marketing, and performance monitoring. It seeks to achieve this goal through strategic partnerships for analysis, information sharing, investment, market services and policy advocacy. The Katoomba Group includes over 180 experts and practioners from around the world representing a unique range of experience in business finance, policy, research and advocacy. Peking University College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (http://cese.pku.edu.cn/index.asp): The College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering consists of three departments — Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management and Environmental Engineering — with 63 faculty members and staff. Major research fields include air chemistry, atmospheric environmental and pollution control, water and sediment, environmental management and sustainable development, environment and health, environmental biological technologies, waste water treatment, and solid waste treatment. From 2001 to 2005, college faculty published more than 600 journal papers, and the College has been successfully competing for research funding, obtaining grants from China’s National “973 program”, National “863 program” and the National Natural Science Foundation, raising more than RMB 70 million (~US$10.3 million) in research grants over this period. Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, Ministry of Environmental Protection, China (http://www.prcee.org/eng_index.htm): The Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy was founded in 1989, and is a national-level policy research institute for macro decision-making on environmental protection. Its main role is to, on the basis of the needs and strategic planning of China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, conduct research on environmental management and policy research to provide policy consultation and information services for national decision-making on environmental protection. Natural Capital Project (http://www.naturalcapitalproject.org): Founded in 2006, the Natural Capital Project is a partnership among Stanford University, The Nature Conservancy, and World Wildlife Fund to align economic forces with conservation. The Natural Capital Project aims to: (1) develop tools for mapping and valuing natural capital and integrating outputs into policy and finance mechanisms; (2) to apply these tools in places worldwide where there are key opportunities to achieve policy change; and (3) to magnify what is learned to transform how businesses, government, and local people interact with nature. In China, the Project is currently using the InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) mapping tool with local Chinese partners to inform landuse and development planning at key pilot projects along the Yangtze River Basin. The Environment for Development Initiative (http://www.efdinitiative.org/): The overall objective of the EfD initiative is to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development through the increased use of environmental economics in the policy-making process. The EfD initiative is a capacity building program in environmental economics, focusing on research, policy advice, and teaching in Central America, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania.     Between Winds and Clouds Bin Yang Chapter 5 Sinicization and Indigenization: The Emergence of the Yunnanese Introduction As the state began sending soldiers and their families, predominantly Han Chinese, to Yunnan, 1 the Ming military presence there became part of a project of colonization. Soldiers were joined by land-hungry farmers, exiled officials, and profit-driven merchants so that, by the end of the Ming period, the Han Chinese had become the largest ethnic population in Yunnan. Dramatically changing local demography, and consequently economic and cultural patterns, this massive and diverse influx laid the foundations for the social makeup of contemporary Yunnan. The interaction of the large numbers of Han immigrants with the indigenous peoples created a 2 new hybrid society, some members of which began to identify themselves as Yunnanese (yunnanren) for the first time. Previously, there had been no such concept of unity, since the indigenous peoples differentiated themselves by ethnicity or clan and tribal affiliations. This chapter will explore the process that led to this new identity and its reciprocal impact on the concept of Chineseness. Using primary sources, I will first introduce the indigenous peoples and their social customs 3 during the Yuan and early Ming period before the massive influx of Chinese immigrants. Second, I will review the migration waves during the Ming Dynasty and examine interactions between Han Chinese and the indigenous population. The giant and far-reaching impact of Han migrations on local society, or the process of sinicization, that has drawn a lot of scholarly attention, will be further examined here; the influence of the indigenous culture on Chinese migrants—a process that has won little attention—will also be scrutinized.

Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

Water quality in Chaoyang Park Lake, Honglingjin Lake and Lianhuachi Lake was revealed to be class V1, meaning the water is completely unusable. The lakes do not form part of the city's drinking water supply. "The pollution is mainly from domestic sewage," said Ma Jun, director of a green NGO- Institute of the Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing which has released a China water pollution map annually since 2006. He said the water in Chaoyang Park Lake and Honglingjin Lake comes from the Liangma River. Ma said the river picks up domestic sewage before it reaches the lakes. Rain drainage systems and sewers also increase the number of pollutants. "This kind of pollution is called 'non-point source pollution'," he explained. Pollutants come from non-specific places and enter rivers and lakes with rainwater. Visitors to parks in east Beijing's business and expat-populated districts said the water pollution in Chaoyang Park is apparent. "I saw waste floating on Chaoyang Park lake and the water is almost black," Yang Xing, a 25-year-old PR company employee, said about her visit in August. Despite the pollution, hiring a boat remains a popular activity on the lake. "People don't seem to care about the water quality," Shi Yu, a postgraduate student and frequent visitor to Chaoyang Park Lake, told METRO yesterday.

HEADINGS THAT NEED TO BE CHANGED FROM THE MACHINE- CONVERTED FORM The data dictionary for the machine conversion of subject headings was prepared in summer 2000 based on the systematic romanization of Wade-Giles terms in existing subject headings identified as eligible for conversion before detailed examination of the headings could take place. When investigation of each heading was subsequently undertaken, it was discovered that some headings needed to be revised to forms that differed from the forms that had been given in the data dictionary. This occurred most frequently when older headings no longer conformed to current policy, or in the case of geographic headings, when conflicts were discovered using current geographic reference sources, for example, the listing of more than one river or mountain by the same name in China. Approximately 14% of the subject headings in the pinyin conversion project were revised differently than their machine- converted forms. To aid in bibliographic file maintenance, the following list of those headings is provided. In subject authority records for the revised headings, Used For references (4XX) coded Anne@ in the $w control subfield for earlier form of heading have been supplied for the data dictionary forms as well as the original forms of the headings. WHITE JADE RING AND QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST As for the foundation and succession myths of early Chinese dynasties, Allan holds that “Ancient Chinese literature contains few myths in the traditional sense of stories of the supernatural but much history” (Allan, 1981: ix) and “history, as it appears in the major texts from the classical period of early China (fifth-first centuries B.C.),has come to function like myth” (Allan, 1981: 10). While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated.

Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.
