  • From Disney to Disaster: the Disney Corporation’S Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks
From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

  • The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway  by Nate Jones
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway By Nate Jones Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative.

  • Killing Zac Efron, Literally
Killing Zac Efron, Literally By:Caitlyn Homolya On December 29, 2019, Zac Efron was rushed to the hospital in Brisbane, Australia after he caught a form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection. Efron was filming his new show, Killing Zac Efron, in Papua New Guinea when he caught this disease. Efron is now stable and out of the hospital after being in there for three weeks. Zac Efron, first known for the High School Musical movies playing Troy Bolton, is an actor most teenage girls love for his good looks and his singing. Makenna Dew is one of those teenage girls, “When I heard Zac Efron almost died, I almost started crying because he was my childhood.” Efron is known for so much more, with a net worth of around 24 million and has acted in over 200 movies. Efron has impacted many lives being an actor and is loved by many, so a lot of people were heartbroken to hear that Efron got sick and was hospitalized. Efron kept it quiet while he was in the hospital so he could heal in peace, and then after he was healthy and the typoid-like disease was out of him, he came out and said he was okay after speculation about him was spread. Efron was filming the show, Killing Zac Efron, so he was going to be off the grid for three weeks in the jungle with no luxuries. In any case, the show's title appeared to be worryingly close to the line as he wound up on a “life or death” helicopter trip to Australia after he was hit with this serious illness.

  • The Prestige Talent: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, David Bowie, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis, Rebecca Hall. Da
The Prestige Talent: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, David Bowie, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis, Rebecca Hall. Date of review: Thursday the 16th of November, 2006 Writer/director/editor: Christopher Nolan Classification: M Duration: 130 minutes We rate it: Five stars. The Prestige is a film that will generate strong reactions for different reasons: some cinemagoers will find it, as I did, one of the most fascinating, exhilarating and compelling films of the year; others may find its dialogue-heavy, convoluted narrative too much to cope with on first viewing. The Prestige is indeed a challenging and thought-provoking film, but this, to me, is one of its primary assets, and is the mark of a sophisticated and intelligent piece of art. With the holiday season and its peppering of by-the-numbers, yawn-inducing blockbusters just around the corner, The Prestige is that most beautiful of contrasts: a stunningly well-conceived film that reminds us of the great power of storytelling itself. A film about two Victorian-era stage magicians and their intense, life-altering rivalry, The Prestige tells an intoxicating story in masterful and constantly surprising style. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman star as two magicians working on the London stage at the end of the 19th Century. Ambitious and talented performers, both men want to earn the title of the most accomplished magician in England. They begin their careers working together, but after a tragic accident that irrevocably alters the relationship between the two men, they become bitter rivals. As their separate attempts to conceive of the perfect magic trick become more dangerous and more complex, both men are driven to extremes of behaviour that will draw them towards other complex and mysterious figures; ultimately, the pursuit of the perfect illusion will have unimaginable consequences in the real lives of both men.
