Jo-Ann Macneil CV JO-ANN MACNEIL +44 (0)7539 274156 Makeup Designer [email protected] Jo-Ann’s current project is Guillermo del Toro's feature "Nightmare Alley" and has just completed Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" as Key Make Up. Her recent films as Makeup Designer include the DC Comic feature film "Shazam" with Zachary Levi and Mark Strong. The Netflix original How It Ends with Forest Whitaker and Theo James and The Headhunter’s Calling with Gerard Butler. She has also recently completed Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 as Key Makeup in which she was nominated for A MUAHS guild award. David Ayer’s DC comic epic Suicide Squad as Makeup Head of Department. Suicide Squad won an Academy Award in 2017 for Achievement in Makeup. In 2014, Jo-Ann won a Canadian Screen Award for her work on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Jo-Ann has always prided herself on an impeccable attention to detail that helps bring every one of her projects to life. Much in demand, she is based in the UK and available for work worldwide.     Craft / Geoff Barrow of Portishead with Ben Salisbury quite dry, quite traditional. I was expecting it might be like ‘The Kids from Fame’. But they weren’t, the vast majority of students wanted to be music teachers! The benefit was there was a brand new recording studio at Newcastle University, and there was only me and one other guy who were interested in using it, so we had the run of it. It was absolutely state-of-the- art, when samplers and digital stuff were just taking off. So that was really my introduction into composing. Music for Film and TV at Bournemouth in the early ’90s was a brilliant course, in that you had your own workstation. You were sat down, you had deadlines, and it was quite pressurised, so was actually quite similar to life as a commercial composer. Weirdly, that was probably exactly the same time Geoff [Barrow] was using samplers to make Portishead’s Dummy. What was your first real break? I came out of Bournemouth with a credit to my name, because I did music for a short film that went on to win an award, and was broadcast on Channel Four. It was directed by a guy called Ben Salisbury Miguel Sapochnik who I’ve worked with since on other short films. Now he directs episodes of DAVE ROBINSON meets the nature documentary composer Game of Thrones!     The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.
