Representations and Discourse of Torture in Post 9/11 Television: an Ideological Critique of 24 and Battlestar Galactica
REPRESENTATIONS AND DISCOURSE OF TORTURE IN POST 9/11 TELEVISION: AN IDEOLOGICAL CRITIQUE OF 24 AND BATTLSTAR GALACTICA Michael J. Lewis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown Advisor Through their representations of torture, 24 and Battlestar Galactica build on a wider political discourse. Although 24 began production on its first season several months before the terrorist attacks, the show has become a contested space where opinions about the war on terror and related political and military adventures are played out. The producers of Battlestar Galactica similarly use the space of television to raise questions and problematize issues of war. Together, these two television shows reference a long history of discussion of what role torture should play not just in times of war but also in a liberal democracy. This project seeks to understand the multiple ways that ideological discourses have played themselves out through representations of torture in these television programs. This project begins with a critique of the popular discourse of torture as it portrayed in the popular news media. Using an ideological critique and theories of televisual realism, I argue that complex representations of torture work to both challenge and reify dominant and hegemonic ideas about what torture is and what it does. This project also leverages post-structural analysis and critical gender theory as a way of understanding exactly what ideological messages the programs’ producers are trying to articulate. -

UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league. -
MASTER THESIS an Analysis of the Online Dating Industry and How
MASTER THESIS An Analysis of the Online Dating Industry and How Startups Can Compete Copenhagen Business School 2015 MSc in Business Administration and Information Systems Martin Wendel ______________________________ ______________ Emil Maltesen Frandsen ______________________________ ______________ Supervisor: Ioanna Constantiou Number of pages: 119 Number of characters: 218.031 Date of submission: June 2, 2015 ABSTRACT Many new dating sites are started each year but few become a success. This paper provides an analysis, evaluation and recommendations for startups seeking to enter and compete the online dating industry. Methods of analysis include an industry analysis of the general online dating industry, further investigation of 35 of the major dating sites as well as five in-depth case studies. The cases studied were Match, PlentyofFish, Ashley Madison, Tinder and the Dating Ring. A ranking of the most popular dating sites is found in the appendix. We found that each dating site had individual and unique concepts as well as a particular market focus. This led us to identify that each site could be placed in a quadrant within a framework we developed. The X-axis is the market focus: (X1) Mainstream or (X2) Niche and the Y-axis is the concept differentiation (Y1) Generic or (Y2) Unique. While individual dating sites had different strategies for creating their user base as well as maintaining it, certain properties would match each other in relation to the sites in their quadrant. Reputation was found to be extremely important and word of mouth, both positive and negative, helped each of the cases studied grow. The biggest differentiator in their strategy was the time in which they launched.
