HARD REPORT U2, "With Or Without You", Island.... I have a Autograph, "Loud and Clear", RCA.... Guitar feeling Lin Brehmer's "U2!! U2??" reaction won't be pyrotechnics and a quick study chorus is what put unique. True to form, the band has decided to lead these guys on the map In the first place, and we're off with their most unconventional single yet. Who is glad to see they're back to those good rocking to say the heady, sophisticated song structure would basics. Steve Lynch may not be Eddie's equal when It work for anyone else? And how many bands would comes to whipping up and down the fretboard, but really have the confidence to release such a cerebral you've got to appreciate the fact that this tune is one and introspective mood piece first? Only the Police at long monster lead break from start to finish and that's their apex. I am honestly hard pressed to predict what drives the core crowd wild. multi format success, but have to applaud the group for dealing with the pressures of RockWorld on their Andy Taylor, "Don't Let Me Die Young", own terms. Will it be a hit? Who cares. It's new U2 MCA.... And you thought anybody having anything to and that's all that matters. do with Duran Duran was a dead duck? Looks to us like the last one in on "I Might Lie" is a rotten egg. Night Ranger, "Secret of My Success", The "image problem" was quickly blown away by the Camel/MCA.... We were expecting either balls or wall of MarshaIls, and Andy's sitting on one of the ballads with the smart money riding on choice B. year's quickest turnaround success stories. And What we got is an interesting change of pace, considering the overwhelming acceptance and raves sounding more like early to mid period Chicago than from the likes of Carter Alan, Dr. K, Wendy Steele, anything Night Ranger has done to date. Bank on big Joe Blood, and Ron Nenni the world might actually be time CHR attention, with Urban crossover also a ready for yet another song from the kid. "Don't Let distinct possibility. Me Die Young" gets this vote. ALSO NEW THIS WEEK Eddie Money, "Endless Nights", Col.... Here's Fleetwood Mac, "Big Love", WB.... Didn't Steve one for the Automatic category, even if top 40 weren't and I hear it in Palm Springs? No wait, that was a expecting it momentarily.. The rock radio push starts Big Dish album cut. At least that what we told the with a 37 station base, including heavy action at Music Police. How do you think we managed to get WRIF, WLLZ, WHJY, KSHE, KOME, KFMG, WEBN and the CD out of Gerrity's suite? Just don't say a word WRCN, with 7 increases and a 72-47 Underline--the and I'll get it to you late next week. Not a word. fifth longest this week. I gy Pop, "Isolation", A&M.... Now that Andy Warhol's job is open the sky's the limit for the lgman. And the absolute, very best, unqualified #1 as of yet It's up to us to make him the rock star he always unreleased monster in our particular tapecage? wanted to be before he goes totally multi media. Now Bryan Adams — Heat of the Night". He's rich but try and tell me "Isolation" isn't as good as some of he's rockin. the mentor's recent soundtrack stuff. TAPETALK Tomorrow's Music Today!! What a concept. By now you've had a chance to get comfortable with Volume 5 of our Cassette Sampler series--and now that the Cult, Whitesnake, John Philip, Gino Vannelli, Autograph, and Del Fuegos are off and running, here's a little more pre-hype on three lesser known acts we know you'll be intrigued by. Because Virgin's Michael Plen drives a hard bargain (and gave us the Cutting Crew first), side 1, cut 1 is that new label new big crossover item, The Other Ones and "We Are What We Are". To our ears, it sounds like Stevie Nicks meets Aimee Mann. Big haunting hook here. Notice how well it segues into "Love Removal Machine", too. Speaking of segs, I think you're gonna love Mondo Rock's "Primitive Love Rites" out of the Cult. Could this be the same band that enjoyed radio success a couple of years ago with "Rock School"? No way!! But, yes, it's true. Since we're into playing the "sounds like" game, how do you like "Whip It" meets that great guitar break in "Gimme All Your Lovin"--capped with a killer harp break that would make Magic Dick stand up and salute. It's hard to categorize this energized little dynamo, but it's an audience exciter if we ever heard one. And in an equally intriguing but slightly more subdued vein is Rock and Hyde's "Dirty Water". Why Paul Hyde picked "The Payolas" for his band name will remain a mystery, but that fact will merit only footnote status to his "ten year overnight success" once this powerful, compelling tune hits the airwaves. It's truly world class in terms of melody and production and just what his long term fans and supporters have known he'd hit with as soon as the checks cleared. Finally, we're weeks away from A&M's Thrashing Doves. It's bouncy, melodic and most of all clever and quirky--one of those songs you like on first listen and sing on the second. Punchy and different.
