DAFFODILS Narcissus. Amaryllidaceae. in the Following 1 DAFFODILS beautiful Daffodil which was found naturalized and Narcissus. Amaryllidaceae. growing abundantly some years ago, and whence it has been distributed under the name of Countess of In the following catalogue, I have listed cultivars Annesley.’ alphabetically under the separate raisers. I have annotated ref: Flora & sylva 2 (1904): 213. some of the cultivars, but because details of all the others are available in the International daffodil register (1998), I ❀❀❀ have omitted descriptions, parentage and awards (except awards of garden merit AGM). I am extremely grateful to Ballydorn Bulb Farm: Killinchy, Co. Down the Daffodil Registrar, Sally Kington, for her collaboration, 188 cultivar registered. and most especially for providing me with alphabetic lists of cultivars for the raisers. ‘Aldringham’: raised 1968; registered 1978 ‘Annalong’: 1982 Origins unknown ‘Ardglass’: raised 1972; registered 1983 ‘Ardmillan’: raised 1986; registered 1996 ‘Big Irish Spurius’ ‘Ballygowan’: raised 1981; registered 1993 before 1886 name – note that this is probably not a valid cultivar name, but ‘Ballykinler’: 1994 it was a convenient moniker used by daffodil enthusiasts. ‘Ballymaster’: 1967 ‘It increases slowly, making bulbs larger than any other trumpet ‘Ballymorran’: raised 1982; registered 1994 Daffodil, some of the bulbs producing four or five scapes. The ‘Ballynahinch’: raised 1982; registered 1994 flower, though less bright in colour and different in shape, rivals ‘Ballynichol’: raised 1977; registered 1989 in size those of the true N. maximus.’ ‘Ballyward’: 1982 Origin: ‘Nobody knows its origin ...’ – a daffodil that ‘Baltic Shore’: 1991 populates the pages of horticultural periodicals in the ‘Barleygold’: raised 1980; registered 1990 1880s, and obviously known from Irish gardens. C. Wolley ‘Barleywine’: 1993 Dod was one who wrote about it. ‘Best of Luck’: 1983 ‘Braddock’: 1980 With your remark that this Daffodil deserves a better ‘Brave Adventure’: 1979 name I quite agree, for it is nearly the finest variety of ‘Bridesmaid’: 1970 Narcissus Pseudo-Narcissus in cultivation. ... I first ‘Cantala’: 1968 received flowers of it, followed by a hamper of bulbs ‘Canticle’: 1984 about seven years ago, from a lady on whose father’s ‘Capisco’: 1969 land it grew near the river Blackwater, in the county of ‘Carlingford’: 1992 Cork. It grows there still ... It flowers with me here ‘Castlehill’: raised 1971; registered 1981 nearly as early as the Tenby Daffodil, coming out in ‘Charity Fair’: 1983 average season the first week in March ... I do not think ‘Churchman’: 1968 the large variety was known in England until I ‘Church Town’: 1977 distributed some about five years ago. ‘Colour Sergeant’: raised 1975; registered 1989 ‘Conly’: raised 1978; registered 1995 ref: The garden 29 (30 January 1886): 101. ‘Copper Nob’: raised 1980; registered 1991 ‘Craigarusky’: 1992 ‘Marie’ ‘Crown Royalist’: 1976 before 1902 ‘A fine bold’ flower ‘almost as white as a good cernuus’. ‘Cuan Gold’: raised 1982; registered 1993 Origin: a spontaneous seedling in a garden in Co. Wicklow, ‘Cushendun’: raised 1968; registered 1980 where ‘there are many interesting seedlings’. This one was ‘Delphin Hill’: raised 1976; registered 1989 a cross between N. bicolor and N. cernuus (see also ‘Rosa’). ‘Derryboy’: 1990 Frederick Moore wrote that ‘Dove of Peace’: 1980 ‘Drumbeg’: raised 1983; registered 1994 One of the secrets of these seedlings appearing in this ‘Drumlin’: raised 1981; registered 1993 Wicklow garden is the fact that it has always been ‘Dundrod’: 1979 tended by a lady who loves it, who weeds it herself by ‘Dunlambert’: 1975 hand, and who never allows a scuffle-hoe to be used ‘Dunrod’: about 1980 against her pets. ‘Eye Level’: raised 1983; registered 1994 ‘Fairday’: 1967 ref: Gard chron. 31 (3 May 1902): 294. ‘Fairgreen’: 1965 ‘Fair Head’: 1982 ‘Rosa’ ‘Fairmaid’: raised 1970; registered 1980 before 1902 White flowers. ‘Fairmile’: 1969 Origin: a spontaneous seedling in a garden in Co. Wicklow, ‘Fairsel’: raised 1968; registered 1978 where ‘there are many interesting seedlings’. This one, ‘a ‘Fairy Footsteps’: 1982 cross between N. nanus and N. cernuus’. Davies, Co-Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Massimo Mazzotti Summer 2015 Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 Copyright 2015 by Leon Chisholm Abstract Keyboard Playing and the Mechanization of Polyphony in Italian Music, Circa 1600 by Leon Chisholm Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Kate van Orden, Co-Chair Professor James Q. Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands.

SOME PRACTICAL HINTS ON GROWING DAFFODILS 0 Outdoor—Site Daffodil bulbs will grow and flower in any well-drained garden sail, but DAFFODIL they like best a well-worked and deep loam which may be from quite a light character to a stiff clay. Be sure of good drainage. The position should be open to a fair amount of sun, yet sheltered from the full force of prevailing winds. Price List If the shelter is provided by trees, the bulb beds must be kept away from the roots, and the site should not be totally enclosed by permanent shelters. It may be necessary to provide additional shelter at certain points, and these are best afforded by temporary fences such as manuka, halts of straw, and so on, which should be removed at the end of the flowering period. 1972 - 73 Manures— Apply a good dressing of fine bone dust with which a small quantity of Basic Slag and Sulphate of Potash has been mixed, This mixture should be WRITE US FOR YOUR NEW SEASON'S applied at the rate of 3oz. per square yard at planting time, or, if preferred, as a top dressing, when the foliage shows through the ground.
