Life-long learning is a continuous process. The Library System acknowledges the fact that being part of the academic wheel collaboration and partnership with faculty, students, alumni and civic society should be strengthened and enhanced to ensure that services are user-driven. True, indeed, AY 2018-2019 was the “MAKER YEAR” for the Li- brary System. Maker activities covering the ARTS (dancing, drawing, singing, photography); SKILLS DEVELOPMENT (First Aid and Disaster Preparedness), and STEM (Robotics) were initiated, orga- nized and hosted. Furthermore, the library spaces evolved into learning spaces such as discussion rooms, collaborative hubs, multimedia hubs, perk rooms, beverage area, and game zone nooks. In the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the library system continues to uphold the principle of delivering its best per- formance to satisfy the library customers of the University in carrying out its services and building its collection during the Academic Year and always be true to this mandate in the succeeding Academic Years of operation. MAXIE DOREEN L. CABARRON Library MakerSpace: Web-Enabled Programmable Car (WEP-C) Marcie Mariñas (WEP-C) Library MakerSpace: Web-Enabled Programmable Car Programmable Car Library MakerSpace: Web-Enabled The USC Library System, Computer Engineering Department and American Corner-Cebu in collaboration with Maker Initiative Singapore presented “Library MakerSpace: Web-Enabled Programmable Car (WeP-C)” whole day event in July 12, 2019, Friday, at Science & Technology Library, Reading Area, JB-LRC, Talamban Campus. Its objectives were as follows: 1. To empower the next generation in their creativity and innovation. 2. To promote sustainable living through Science and Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM). 3. To promote educational technology. The event featured Engr. Mark Lven T. Palejaro, a B.S. Com.E. alumnus who currently works in Singapore as Advanced Software Engineer at Kulick & Soffa Pte Ltd, K&S Corporate Headquarters; a Co-founder of Pocket Hologram as well as an active volunteer in One Maker Group, Sustainable Living Lab, and in various National Geographic Channel events. WEP-C dealt with the program which allows participants to experience firsthand web-enabled programming to better understand the meaning of robotics in the context towards the 4th industrial revolu- tion. There were 20 student participants who were mostly Computer Engineering and currently members of the Computer Driv- en Enthusiast Club as suggested by Department Chair Engr. Linda E. Saavedra. Along with the Computer Engineering Department chair were four faculty members: Engrs. James Michael Cañete, Thairell Imperial, Alvin Joseph Macapagal, and Jan Dave Campañera who assisted in facilitating the one day workshop with the speaker’s sister, Engr. Mae Lennyvie T. Palejaro, a B.S. ECE alumnus as well. The first part of the one day workshop was basically exclusive for the student participants to assemble, create and design the car. Whereas, the second part, was on programming and project exhibition witnessed by librarians led by the Director of Libraries Maxie Doreen L. Cabarron and some USC community members as student participants showcased their completed web-enabled programmable car. Maker Initiative Singapore prepared prizes for the first one to reach the finish line challenge. There were three rounds and the fastest in every round were the ones in competition to garner as winners for the 1st and 2nd prizes. Andre Kimberly Trish D’Silva got the INTEL Galileo as grand prize and Charm Johannes Relator got the Google Card Board while Daryl Butar won another Google Card Board for the Special Award, having the best design, tidiest and sturdiest car. Indeed, it was a blast where USC JB-LRC had a glimpse of Singapore Maker Extravaganza! 4 LRC MakerSpace Charlene Princepe, Irish Concepcion & Jacquelyn Gabat It’s a space where collaboration, creation, invention and learning takes place independently or supervised with thematic thrust or agenda aligned with the academic subject/curriculum. A Carolinian Maker dreams big as he/she has fun cre- ating, designing, discovering, thinking and questioning in order to apply and share new knowledge and ideas. The library’s objectives are: 1) provide an open space where students are free to make choices about their learning; 2) provide freedom to explore and fail. Thus, needs willingness to embrace the chaos and messiness that comes with implementing the space; 3) provide access to resources and materials for exploring, tinkering, creating. During the 1st semester 2018-2019, the Library initiated activities for its MakerSpace. This was done through the dif- ferent weekly activities: Zumba, Drawing 101, First Aid 101 and Photography 101. Each activity was handled by the librarian in every floor or discipline area. Librarians coordinated with the respective departments for the faculty to be the facilitator/speaker, which, in turn, gave students points for Community Extension Service in the university. MakerWednesday: Zumba The desire to create a splendid environment to connect with co- employees and students in a non-stressful atmo- sphere while staying fit is the primary benefit of having the MakerWednesday activity. The activi- ty sessions were held at the façade of Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center (JB-LRC) last September 5 and October 3, 2018. The workout routines were divided through various music, each with different dance moves or steps. The instructors led the participants with hand signals to cue on what to do or which direction to move. A total of 42 staff, faculty and students experienced the enjoyable, sweaty and refreshing afternoon exercise. The Library System is grateful to SHS-PE instructors Jacques Barquin and Michelet Marie Sagetarios with the special participation of Ms. Jonah Faelnar. The energetic and graceful instructors led the basic moves and formulas of the different Zumba Styles and danced the stress away! The Librarian collaborated with Ar. Niño Bryan Auman, faculty member from the School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Institute for Planning and Design (SAFAD). The activity aimed to teach interested students, faculty, and staff the basics of drawing. This event LRC MakerSpace was joined by 24 faculty, staff and students from the various departments of Science, Technology & Mathematics (STeM), AB History, BS Architecture, BS Civil Engineering, BS Infor- mation & Technology, and Library & Information Science. The activity started with a prayer led by the Humanities Librarian Jacquelyn A. Gabat, which was followed by the introduction of the speaker. Indeed, the series of exercises prepared by Ar. Auman led in awakening individual’s artistic interest and capacity. More so, it even enhanced the participants’ interest and revealed their hidden ability for drawing.
