They relate how repre- 36 sentations of Afro-Cuban religion can occur in contexts where the order 37 of the binary is subverted by their performance. In this piece, I want 38 to use fieldwork done with practitioners of Santería to investigate how 39 vernacular discourses about gender, embodiment, and the past reorder 40 these very categories. In the same vein, I want to reread Lydia Cabrera’s 41 work Yemayá y Ochún: Kariocha, Iyalorichas y Olorichas in a queer man- 42 43 85 SP_OTE_Ch03_085-112.indd 85 7/9/13 5:14 PM 86 Solimar Otero 1 ner that will also open up these categories to broader interpretations.3 2 As Cabrera merges ethnography with fiction and reported speech within 3 a form of play that troubles the authorial voice, her writing is an invita- 4 tion to question how we think about what we know about Afro-Cuban 5 religious culture. -

B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

The sobriquet became a popular shorthand for the Puerto Rican exodus to the United States after World War II. Since the mid-1960s, the neologism became associated with the literary and artistic movement known as "Nuyorican." The movement was institutionalized with the 1973 founding ofthe Nuyorican Poets Café in the Lower East Side of Manhattan by Miguel Algarín and Miguel Piñero. Much of Nuyorican literature featured frequent autobiographical references, the predominance of the English language, street slang, realism, parodie humor, subversiva politics, and a ruptura with the island's literary models. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

Spanish-English bilinguals have been producing literature in Spanish, in English, and gradually in mixtures of both languages from the earliest days of contact in the U.S. This paper explores manifestations and meanings of Spanish-English bilingualism in Latino literature and the sense of otherness that it expresses and that derives from it. The paper states that literary codeswitching in U.S. Latino literature--that is, the use of more than one language in a text--are choices the writer makes and that many instances are due to the need to reflect the immigrant experience. And it further states that Hispanic literature has produced the most varied and consistently codeswitched literature in the United States, although Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans all vary in the extent of their literary codeswitching. The main part of the paper considers diverse examples of literary codeswitching in Latino literature. According to the paper, there are many references to cultural separateness as a consequence of linguistic otherness in Latino literature. -

Méndez García [email protected] Curso 2011/12 OBJETIVOS This course deals with the literary and cultural production of ethnic and social minorities in the United States. The United States’ complex ethnic and social map lends a multicultural and idiosyncratic character to its arts and institutions, while also articulating the reality of the country and its inhabitants. By questioning the traditional literary canon and analyzing the debates in North American universities in the last three decades, students are supposed to examine the social, ideological and literary questions that influence the production and reception of texts produced by ethnic groups and minorities. Alex Bravo The preservation of afro-cuban culture in the writings of Lydia Cabrera Lydia Cabrera was born May 20th, 1899 in Havana, Cuba. In 1960, following the Cuban Revolution, she fled the island to Madrid, Spain, where she started her long exile. Two years later she relocated to Miami, Florida, where she lived until her death September 19th, 1991. Her father, Raimundo Cabrera, was a writer and a lawyer, a prominent man in Cuba’s 1900 society. She received a liberal and humanist education. Probably that is why, since a very early age Lydia Cabrera was interested in Afro-Cuban folklore. The family had many African servants and child caretakers; her interest was sparked mainly because of the stories told by her Afro-Cuban nanny. Lydia Cabrera published over one hundred books during her lifetime; her most significant book is The Wilderness (in Spanish: El Monte) (1954), which was her first major anthropological study of Afro-Cuban traditions. -

Unlike other disciplines whose growth and maturation have progressed naturally since the development of modern scholarship in the 1900s, the studyof Cuban orisha-based religion derived from the traditions of the Lucumí and Yoruba has only recently come into its own. During the 1800s and 1900s, there were some accounts of slave religion in novels, travel accounts, and some encyclopedic works by US and European authors. -
