Cheltenham United Reformed Church November 2016 ‘Through Faith, Fellowship and Care We Affirm that Jesus Is Lord’ CHELTENHAM UNITED REFORMED CHURCH www.urcic.org.uk Minister Rev Maz Allen 01242 238273 [email protected] Rev Gary Grady 01242 511522 [email protected] In Touch November 2016 Welcome to ‘In Touch’ – The magazine of Cheltenham United Reformed Church, a joint pastorate of the three United Reformed Churches in Cheltenham, sharing a Minister, Rev Maz Allen. The three churches work very closely together, sharing this magazine, the website and all activities. St Andrew’s United Reformed Church is in the Montpellier district of Cheltenham town centre. A former Presbyterian church founded in 1885, it became United Reformed on unification in 1972. Recent renovations now offer an impressive facility, meeting the needs of 21st century Cheltenham. Prestbury United Reformed Church is in the heart of Prestbury village on the northern edge of Cheltenham. A former Congregational chapel built in 1866, becoming United Reformed on unification in 1972. The Church in Warden Hill is a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) between the Anglican (St Christopher’s) and URC communities of Up Hatherley and Warden Hill in the south of Cheltenham. Ministry is shared between the URC Minister, Rev Maz Allen, and Rev Gary Grady of the Anglican South Cheltenham Team Ministry. Both the Anglican and URC buildings are regularly used for worship. For other information about the Church in Warden Hill please see ‘The Lantern’ or visit www.tciwh.org.uk Jesus said: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18 v20 NRSV) 1 In Touch November 2016 News of the Church Family We are invited to pray for: Jean Bennett, John Mears, Hilary Eaton, Colin and Paulette Hyde, Tony Gledhill, Vivian Bracey, Elvina Norcott, Jean Williams, Doreen Steele, Jessie Stredwick. The Reverend Gary Grady Team Vicar in the South Cheltenham Team with responsibility for St. Peter’s Leckhampton and The Church in Warden Hill. “I was born in 1969 in Winchester, Hampshire and later attended St. Mary Redcliffe Secondary School in Bristol. I studied for my first degree at Bristol Polytechnic, where I gained a B.A. (Hons) in Systems Analysis. Following this I worked for BT for 19 years until 2011, working in a variety of roles, initially as an analyst/programmer, but ultimately as the Head of Training Design for BT Retail UK. I trained in Theology at the West of England Ministerial Centre (WEMTC) at Redcliffe College in Gloucester, after which I served my curacy in Cirencester. My family and I are delighted to be a part of the team here in South Cheltenham and value the ecumenical partnerships we have here. We look forward to joining in with God’s mission in this place and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in the communities.” St Andrew’s Church Meeting The Church Meeting will be on 6th November after Morning Worship. A Proposal has been received by the Elders for discussion: ‘That Sunday Morning Worship at St Andrew’s should be moved forward to 10.30am.’ St Andrew’s Elders 2 In Touch November 2016 Our Minister Writes: Dear Friends, Last month, a few of us from CURC went to All Saints to swell the 250- strong choir recording for BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’. What fun we had and how rich the sound of so many voices. Possibly two of the hymns might be broadcast in Advent, but we don’t know when, as for the rest – they will be used any time during 2017. So watch the programme!! I have always loved being involved in large choirs or listening to full orchestras. I guess I just like loud music! But it’s more than that; there is a level of emotion which helps me to connect with adoration and praise of God. Worship is more…inevitable…somehow. On Remembrance Sunday it is not so much the sound as the sight which stirs the emotion for me – the sight of hundreds of veterans and serving forces personnel at the Cenotaph in London, or the smaller march-past in Cheltenham town centre, or the local village gathering around the war memorial in Prestbury or the quiet laying of wreaths and crosses outside St. Christopher’s. For at least six years I have taken part in the evening Remembrance Service at the Town Hall and have been privileged to actually be on-stage facing the congregation when the poppy petals fall. Extraordinarily moving. One of Cheltenham’s veterans is now a Chelsea Pensioner and the applause he receives is marvellous! Because of others’ sacrifice, we in this country live in peace. Thanks be to God. Amen. Maz 3 In Touch November 2016 Obituary Barbara Russell-Smith 1931-2016 Barbara was well-known as one of a pair: ‘Denham and Barbara’. As part of St. Andrew’s, they were supportive in all they did for the church. When Denham died twenty months ago Barbara lost her soul-mate. Their favourite pastime was to sit in their garden holding hands, watching the birds and enjoying the flowers. In her tribute at her mother’s funeral Penny referred to Barbara as ‘an English Romantic’. Barbara loved the richness of the English language and she wrote a Georgian romantic novel entitled ‘This Madding Fever’ under the pseudonym Corella Maxwell. Barbara loved dressmaking, flower-arranging and many other craft-oriented hobbies. She (and Denham) were also known for their fudge, sold in great quantities at our church fairs. We will miss Barbara’s charming smile and quiet, calming manner, but we know she longed to be re-united with her one true love. May they both rest in the everlasting bounty of Gods’ love. Our love goes to Penny, William and Edward as well as Barbara’s five grandchildren. The response was phenomenal and it raised £1,143 18s 3d which was split between 4 prominent children's charities.
