2 I have been recently reflecting on the fact that Jesus’s ministry was marked by ‘interruptions’… the word interruption by nature may often bring up negative images and feelings, however when we“ observe Jesus’ ministry a little closer we can see that some of the most poignant moments that speak and inspire us today were interruptions to the journey and plan. Notable examples are the woman who had suffered for 12 years with bleeding (Mark 5 v 25), the healing of the paralysed man (Mark 2 v 1 -12) and the healing of the blind man in Mark 10. “.., he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many people admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” (Mark 10 v 48 – 49). Recently I met a friend for a coffee and we talked about this area of God interruptions. We agreed to be more aware and not dismiss potential God interruptions in order to fulfil our ‘good and godly plans’. Like the priest in the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10) how many times had we missed the ‘interruptions of God’ in order to pursue what we believed to be the ‘plans of God’? As we headed to our cars we stopped for a short prayer…as we were praying a man walked past and asked what we were doing?…an interruption to our spiritual practice? Or perhaps a God opportunity? …moments later after we had finished praying for this man at his request he broke into tears, impacted by the love and words of God spoken over him…an interruption of God leading to his Kingdom coming in this man’s life. As I reflect on my time in the Diocese and particularly my involvement in Transforming Mission, I recall that it also has been marked by many interruptions, interruptions to developed plans, to timelines, recruitment, outcomes and expectations. Often these interruptions have initially felt like blockers and disruptions to be overcome but in hindsight we can see God’s hand in those interruptions and how they have been a vehicle for God to direct and lead us into his greater plans and purposes (Proverbs 16 v 9). As we move headlong into the Christmas season and the end of 2020 (a year marked by unexpected interruptions) let us remember the fact that the coming of King Jesus whom we celebrate and worship was a great interruption, an interruption to the religious status quo, an interruption to the pervading culture of the day and to the human expectation of whom and what the saviour King would be and do…but oh what a glorious interruption that was and is and is to come (Rev 1 v 8). So in the same vain let us continue to be aware of the God interruptions, experience his delight in the disruption and see that often it is through the mess of the interruption that his miracle is found.

3 27 DECEMBER – 2 JANUARY SUNDAY 27 DECEMBER ‘When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.’ Luke 1.17-19

Prince of Peace, your ‘good news of great joy’ was made known to the shepherds and they shared it with everyone they met. Help us to be both good news bearers and good news makers in a needy world, where so much news can be bad or sad. Help us also, like Mary, to treasure up and ponder what your good news means in our own lives and the reality of who you are - Emmanuel, God-with-us – and who we are in you. Photo Tony Atkin

SUNDAY 3 JANUARY NEW YEAR And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East. Minnie Louise Haskins, 1908 - ‘God Knows’

These words were famously used by King George VI in his Christmas address to the nation just after the outbreak of the Second World War. At the beginning of this new year, after the tremendous difficulties and sorrows of these past months and in the face of continuing challenges, let us make these words our own and our prayer for one another. SUNDAY 10 JANUARY BAPTISM OF CHRIST & PLOUGH SUNDAY Creator God, you give us the amazing gift of soil in which to grow crops to feed both humans and animals. Grant us wisdom as we seek to work with you and in harmony with the microorganisms and worms in maintaining soil fertility and proper drainage. As we plant successive crops, we trust you for the miracle of growth enabled by the balance of light, warmth, nutrients and moisture to produce an abundant crop. Keep us alert to maintain and use our farm machinery carefully and give us pride and satisfaction in our work. This we pray in the name of Christ, who set his hand to the plough and did not

SUNDAY 17 JANUARY WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY “Love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12b God our Father, you reveal to us your love through Christ and through our brothers and sisters. Open our hearts so that we can welcome each other with our differences and live in forgiveness. Grant us to live united in one body, so that the gift that is each person comes to light. May all of us together be a reflection of the living Christ. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2021 has been prepared by the Monastic Community of Grandchamp in Switzerland. The theme chosen, “Abide in my love and you shall bear much fruit”, is based on John 15:1-17 and expresses the community’s vocation to prayer, reconciliation and unity in the Church and the human family. SUNDAY 24 JANUARY HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY (27 JANUARY) Loving God, we come to you with heavy hearts, remembering the six million Jewish souls murdered during the Holocaust. In the horrors of that history, when so many groups were targeted because of their identity, and in genocides which followed, we recognise destructive prejudices that drive people apart. Forgive us when we give space to fear, negativity and hatred of others, simply because they are different from us. In the light of God, we see everyone as equally precious manifestations of the Divine, and can know the courage to face the darkness. Through our prayers and actions, help us to stand together with those who are suffering, so that light may banish all darkness, love will prevail over hate and good will triumph over evil. Amen. SUNDAY 7 FEBRUARY DIOCESAN SYNOD In April this year the process for electing representatives to Diocesan Synod begins and we ask you all to pray for those who will discern that they can gift their time, thought and experience to helping guide our diocese.

Almighty God, we know that under you we are continually governed by your perpetual love and grace. May we too offer ourselves in your service within the structures of governance we require for seeking the kingdom here and to show Christ’s love to all. We pray especially for the Synods of our Diocese and Deaneries, that many would be inspired to give of themselves in service to them. We offer all this to him who showed us how to serve, Jesus Christ Our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit are ever one God. Amen. Photo Tess Lowe

10 14 – 20 FEBRUARY SUNDAY 14 FEBRUARY LENT ‘In the long run the most unpleasant truth is a safer companion than a pleasant falsehood’. So said Theodore Roosevelt. As we are marked with ash and reminded that ‘dust you are and to dust you shall return’, Lent begins with the deeply unpleasant truth that we are both fragile and mortal. But this, apparently unpleasant reminder of our human weakness, is a safer companion than the alternative lie - that we are invincible, immortal and perfect. Despite our willingness to trust in the pleasant falsehood that fickle things like money, possessions, ambition and status can protect us from suffering and death, the unvarnished truth is that none of them can really protect us, and none of them can last. Ash Wednesday and the forty days that follow invite us to pay attention to that truth, difficult and strange as it might seem, and to make friends with a safer companion - the truth of God’s grace, by which our frailty and mortality are Photo Tess Lowe transformed into hope, a hope that will last. SUNDAY 28 FEBRUARY WORLD DAY OF PRAYER (CELEBRATED 5 MARCH) Father God and Rock of Ages, thank you for the World Day of Prayer, for the islands of Vanuatu; for their people, land, culture and faith. See the conditions of those trying to improve their lives, struggling with different situations, the environment challenging their livelihoods, and the daily worries they face. Strengthen their hope and their faith in you Lord. Bring relief to each sad soul. May they find strength through your unchanging Word to build on a strong foundation. O! Christ embrace Vanuatu, this nation [and all the nations of your world]. May your word empower us together in the year 2021. Amen.

This prayer is part of the prayer resource, Together in Prayer for 2021. It encourages us to look forward to sharing in prayer worldwide with the service prepared by the ladies of Vanuatu and it is a prayer that gives

us encouragement through these challenging times across the world. Photo Edward Webb

SUNDAY 14 MARCH MOTHERING SUNDAY God of tender love and compassion, Mother as well as Father to your children, This Mothering Sunday, please bless and help all who love, nurture and provide for children, especially those struggling to care for their families’ needs in these enormously challenging times. Please bless and comfort all who have lost and mourn their mothers or who face the pain of separation from them, whatever the cause. Please help your Church – and us, your people – to welcome and love unconditionally all who come to us, just as you long to gather us close to yourself, as a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings. Amen.

SUNDAY 21 MARCH THE ENVIRONMENT (PASSIONTIDE BEGINS) In our care for creation, let us echo the words of Pope Francis: “Let us reaffirm our personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation, as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live. Let us rejoice that faith communities are coming together to create a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. Let us continue to grow in the awareness that we all live in a common home as members of a single family. Let us all rejoice that our loving Creator sustains our humble efforts to care for the earth, which is also God’s home where his Word ‘became flesh and lived among us’ (Jn 1:14) and which is constantly being renewed by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. ‘Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth’ (Ps 104:30)” The Very Revd Roger Bush Photo: Tim Green
